WIN 38-16

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won back-to-back matches for the first time in 2010 after defeating the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 38 points to 16 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Monday) in front of 30,120 Members and supporters. This was their biggest win over the Bulldogs since 1969. Rabbitohs second-rower Sam Burgess scored the first double of his NRL career, with centre Beau Champion scoring his third double in a row, to help the Rabbitohs even the ledger in the win-loss columns on the competition ladder. The Rabbitohs personified relentlessness tonight, clicking into gear in the fourth minute of the match, continuing to punish their rivals until the final siren. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in just the second minute of play when five-eighth Ben Roberts crashed over from dummy half. Bryson Goodwin converted to give the visitors a very early-six-nil lead. The Rabbitohs did not let this fluster them, regrouping immediately to post their first point just two minutes later. Champion ran a perfect line off a Sutton pass on the right hand side to charge over, with Issac Luke’s conversion levelling the scores at six-all. South Sydney struck again three minutes later when halfback Chris Sandow crossed for a four-pointer. A bomb went up, with the Rabbitohs controlling the tap-back, finding Champion who put Sandow in the hole to score. Luke converted again to extend the lead to six points. In the 24th minute of play, Nathan Merritt crossed for a try after Issac Luke made a 50 metre bust up the middle of the Bulldogs’ defence. From the ensuing play, the ball through the hands to the right wing, including an outstanding offload from Burgess, to give Merritt a four-pointer. The Rabbitohs attack was impressive, but their defence was equally so. The Rabbitohs defended four sets-of-six on their own line, never giving up on the man battling next to them in the defensive line. After defending those sets, the Rabbitohs finally got some ball and worked their way up the field courtesy of a long bust up the left hand touchline by centre Colin Best. The ball went to the right again, finding Burgess on a short charge to the line, slamming it down for his try on the ANZ Stadium turf. Issac Luke converted to extend his side’s lead to 16 points. It would not end there for the half, with Burgess scoring his second six minutes later. Back-to-back sets set up the field position for the home side, with Burgess fending off two defenders on a short-range burst to the line. The second half started much tighter, with both sides testing each other on occasions. The Rabbitohs were the first to break through the gate though, when Issac Luke scored in the 57th minute. A good straight running line off a Sutton ball led to the try, and Chris Sandow’s conversion extended the lead to 26 points with 20 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs struck back twice through Bryson Goodwin in the 64th minute and Ben Barba in the 72nd minute, but it was all too late for the ‘Dogs. The Rabbitohs rubbed salt into the wound in the final minute of play when Champion snapped up an intercept pass from Brett Kimmorley to race 25 metres and score under the posts. Sandow calmly slotted the extra points to give the Rabbitohs a resounding 38 points to 16 victory. The Rabbitohs laid the platform for the win with the South Sydney backs making the most of the opportunities they created. Beau Champion has now scored six tries in three weeks, with Burgess claiming three tries in the past two games. Champion is currently the NRL’s joint-leading tryscorer with Josh Morris from the Bulldogs on six tries. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said: “It was great to get the two points tonight. It was very important to us. “It showed the boys what we’re capable of. That win will give us confidence going forward. “Now we have to do it regularly.” Lang said that he was impressed with his forwards pack’s performance tonight, and made special mention of David Taylor and Burgess. “We never expected these guys to come into the team and start tearing the competition apart,” Lang said. “They are both at different stages of their development, Sam probably a little ahead of Dave as he has performed at international level. “But it’s not easy to do it from the start of the season, with a new team and new coach. “They are both going to be great players for our Club over time. Sam is signed for four years and Dave is signed for three years. They will both be great players for this Club.” Lang also commented on the performance of his halves tonight. “I think our halves are like our team. We were a bit stop and start, but we’re improving each week. “It’s been a new team with new players and a new coach. It takes a bit to adapt to that and we’ll get there.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi says sticking to the game plan was what secured the two points. “We needed to wake up early when they got that first try, but we knew we shouldn’t start panicking and we didn’t,” Asotasi explained. “We stuck to our game plan and the result took care of itself. “We’re working on it (our physical presence) and it’s gradually improving, but we still have plenty of work to do. “We need to keep challenging ourselves, stay mentally strong and get ourselves up for each game. “If we can do all of that and keep working hard then the results will come.” Bulldogs Head Coach Kevin Moore paid tribute to the Rabbitohs’ forward pack. “There is an old adage – forwards win you matches,” Moore said. “That’s what happened tonight. “We got dominated. It’s as simple as that.” With that victory, the Rabbitohs have moved into the top eight.

NSW Cup Rd4

v Canterbury-Bankstown

The Crest Stadium

Sat Apr 3, 3:00pm

LOSS 12-46

Itula and Crossman were both out. Ryan Apps started in the centres and Dean Webster came into the backrow with Tawha going to prop. Hogan started at halfback and the bench was Williams, Field, Sayegh and Jackson. Wayne Lambkin flipped over his clipboard to run through a list of his injured players. Again. And the dates that they might return. The North Sydney NSW Cup coach had just watched his team lose their round-four match against Canterbury-Bankstown - 46-12. "We've got eight players missing from what would be our starting team," he said. And Lambkin's team bears little comparison to his side that won last year's minor premiership. Last year's captain and Bears forward of the year Chris Trembath is no longer there. Nor are his 2009 player of the year Samu Wara and leading try scorer Reece Robinson. "The budget has been cut since last year because of the direction we're heading with the Central Coast Bears," Lambkin said. "And the money's got to come from somewhere." The Central Coast Bears aim to be in the NRL by 2013 but the consortium could be ready as early as 2012 if the opportunity arises. "If you cut the money of your top players you'll lose them," Lambkin said. "We could offer them pretty much nothing to stick around - and I can completely understand their position." Lambkin said the weakened position of the Bears was part and parcel of the NSW Cup's status as the "forgotten competition". "Coaching a reserve grade has never been any different, but we're more of a stopping station," he said. "And it's important that something is done to make sure this level of football doesn't slip away." The Bears haven't been able to train at North Sydney Oval No 2 all year and Lambkin has even had to set up makeshift goalposts and field markings at some temporary training venues. "We've been training everywhere for the past couple of weeks, so it'll be good to get back to North Sydney for the team to feel a sense of place," he said.
