LOSS 8-22

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday), 22 points to eight in front of 25,152 Members and supporters. Despite playing at ANZ Stadium, the Rabbitohs were away to the Eels who ran in three tries to the Rabbitohs’ two in a game riddled with errors. The Rabbitohs managed to cross the stripe twice in the opening 40 minutes, whilst keeping their line un-breached by the home side. In what can only be described as a messy opening half, both sides struggled to hold onto the ball making ten errors a-piece. The Rabbitohs troubled the scorer early with left winger Fetuli Talanoa scoring in the fourth minute of play. Long balls from Chris Sandow and John Sutton shifted the ball to the left, with hooker Issac Luke giving the last long pass to his winger to score. The battle in the middle was tough, with Fuifui Moimoi belting former Rabbitohs team mate Scott Geddes to force an error, then South Sydney second rower Sam Burgess returning serve on Eels halfback Daniel Mortimer four minutes later, a hit which shook up the young halfback. Young Rabbitohs lock Jason Clark was taken from the field after a heavy knock which saw him gallantly defend his own goal line with wobbly legs barely holding him upright. The Rabbitohs struck for the second time in the 22nd minute through centre Colin Best. The Rabbitohs hung onto the ball for a couple of sets of six, enabling them to progress up the field. Some great defence from big Dave Taylor on Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne in goal gave the Rabbitohs back-to-back sets. During the repeat set, the ball was shifted left again with Sutton putting Best through the hole to score. Both sides continued their woes with ball in hand for the remainder of the half, with the Eels electing to take a penalty goal after the siren to finish the scoring at Rabbitohs eight – Eels two at half time. The Eels were the first to strike in the second half with Timana Tahu taking advantage of repeat sets to score on the left. Luke Burt converted to level the scores at 8-all. Burt then crossed in the 50th minute to give the Eels the lead, after Rhys Wesser was slow to come across and put the ball into touch. Burt converted to give the Eels a six-point advantage. Another penalty in front of the posts in the 56th minute gave Burt an opportunity to extend the lead to eight which he took with ease, giving the Eels an 16-8 advantage with less than 25 minutes remaining. Both sides lost a player to the sin bin in quick succession, Nathan Cayless having a rest in the 64th minute for a strip, followed by Beau Champion in the 66th minute for a high tackle on Hayne. The Eels clinched the win with a try to Daniel Mortimer in the 70th minute. The Rabbitohs looked like they should have been awarded a penalty in the set-of-six prior, but a line drop out gave the Eels a repeat set from which they scored. Burt converted to take the scores to 22-8.

NSW Cup Rd6

v Central Coast

Newcastle Stadium

Sat Apr 17, 1:15pm

WIN 40-30

Late Changes Capewell was replaced by Williams at fullback and Simpson was replaced by Mark Talanoa on the wing. Makeshift props Daniel Sayegh and James Nightingale paved the way for North Sydney's win over Central Coast - their first of the NSW Cup rugby league season. The Bears beat the Centurians 40-30 in round six of the competition at Newcastle on Saturday. Jubilant coach Wayne Lambkin said his front-rowers kept the Bears on the attack throughout the match. "Front-rowers are the most important part of the team - the big men who absorb all the pressure and dish out the punishment," he said. "And we've got some good front-rowers in Daniel and James." Lambkin said the win was a relief for the players and coaching staff. "It was nice to see the players enjoy a win and it's a real confidence boost for the boys," he said. "But it's only round six - there's a long way to go. I'm still looking for some improvement from all of the team. "The win came at a good time. There'll be no more soul searching at training. Hopefully we can improve and work off that win." The Bears led 22-6 seven minutes before half-time but the Centurians scored two quick tries to go in at 22-18.
