LOSS 24-26

The South Sydney Rabbitohs could not take the two competition points home when they travelled to Auckland this weekend, going down 26 points to 24 to the New Zealand Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. The Rabbitohs led 18-14 at the break but it could so easily have been more if not for a couple of errors at crucial times. That was the theme for the game for South Sydney with missed opportunities leaving the visitors two points short at the end of the 80 minutes. The Warriors led after just four minutes when Lance Hohaia, playing his 150th NRL game, slipped between Chris Sandow and Beau Champion to score. Brett Seymour converted out wide to give the home side a six-nil advantage. The video referee then awarded Rabbitohs centre Colin Best a try in the 13th minute after some good play from five-eighth John Sutton. Sutton drew the defence and put Best through a hole, and despite Kevin Locke’s best attempt to strip the ball in the tackle, Best grounded the ball with his torso to register the Rabbitohs’ first try of the afternoon. Issac Luke converted to level with the scores at six-all. The Warriors regained the lead eight minutes later when Brent Tate scored from a cross-field bomb. Just three minutes later the Rabbitohs took the lead when Fetuli Talanoa crossed on the left hand side. Rhys Wesser drifted to the left from a scrum and put Best through a hole. Best managed to offload to Talanoa who scored out wide. Issac Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs a two-point advantage. The Rabbitohs were next to score when Wesser scored a try himself in the 33rd minute of play. John Sutton offloaded in heavy traffic to Wesser who tipped the ball on to Issac Luke. Luke made a long break from 40 metres out from the goal line, drawing the defence and putting Wesser away under the posts. Issac Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs an 18-10 lead. The Warriors scored on the half time siren when Jerome Ropati took advantage of what looked like a forward pass to score out wide on the left hand side. The game was tight one at the break with the Rabbitohs cruelling a number of scoring opportunities through poor handling in the wet conditions. Sam Burgess was punishing in defence and a handful in attack, with Issac Luke and Rhys Wesser also looking dangerous throughout the half. The halves in Sutton and Sandow were starting to take control in the back end of the half and had the Warriors on the back foot in the last 15 minutes of the opening stanza. Two lazy defensive efforts led to the Warriors two tries early in the second half. The Warriors struck first when Ropati scored his second try in the 47th minute followed by Russell Packer in the 50th minute. Seymour converted both to give the Warriors a 26-18 lead. The Rabbitohs scored a timely try through winger Fetuli Talanoa in the 68th minute after a long break from Sandow. Sandow had support inside and outside, but positioned Talanoa perfectly to seal a great try. Issac Luke converted to bring the Rabbitohs within two points of their opponents with ten minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs had four or five opportunities to steal the win in the final ten minutes, with final minutes hitting the deck to deny the side that last winning score. For the Rabbitohs Sam Burgess stood tall, playing arguably his best game in the red and green jersey so far.

Judiciary News

Wesser has been placed on report for a high tackle. Rabbitohs fullback Rhys Wesser will be available for selection for this Sunday’s monster clash with the Penrith Panthers at ANZ Stadium after being charged by the NRL Match Review Committee today. Wesser was charged with a grade one careless high tackle during the Rabbitohs defeat to the Warriors yesterday. The charge attracted a base penalty of 75 points. The total accrued points will total less than 100 points whether Wesser chose to take an early guilty plea or fight the charge at the NRL Judiciary, thus making him available for this weekend’s game.

NSW Cup Rd11

v Windsor

North Sydney Oval

Sat May 21, 3:00pm

WIN 26-14

Late changes to the Bears side were, M.Talanoa and Itula were out of the backline, with McLean playing fullback and R.apps on the wing. In the forwards D.Apps was out with D.Webster coming into the starting lineup. Nashaat Zreika came up onto the bench. THEY might be the walking wounded but the North Sydney Bears are still growling. The injury-plagued Bears swept aside their injury woes to beat Windsor Wolves 26-14 in round 11 of the NSW Cup at North Sydney Oval on Saturday. The red and blacks went into the game with eight players unavailable through injury including backrowers Deon Apps and Matt Hunt and fullback Mark Talanoa, who withdrew after training on Friday night. Bears coach Wayne Lambkin said his patched-up side showed courage under adversity to notch up their second win of the season. “It was a pretty big 24 hours for us and a big low on Friday night - I wasn’t sure if we could get 17 players together to take to the field,” he said. “We have been undermanned but on Saturday we just played a really good style of football and we didn’t make a lot of errors. “The better we played, the more frustrated Windsor became. “If you looked at our team on paper you wouldn’t think we could win but the harder Windsor tried, the better we got.” The Bears controlled the game from the kick-off and took a handy 14-4 lead into halftime. Lambkin said his new halves pairing of five-eighth Eddie Paea and Jarryd Hogan were pivotal in guiding the team around the field. “There weren’t any better players on our team than those two,” he said. “It was certainly the best game they have played being the team’s generals and pushing us around. “Their kicking was our best for the year.”
