LOSS 18-54

The South Sydney Rabbitohs went down to the Penrith Panthers 54 points to 18 at CUA Stadium in Penrith tonight (Friday) in front of 13,411 supporters. The Rabbitohs were blown away in the opening 40 minutes with the Panthers turning in their best half of football for the season to keep time with the scoreboard clock and rack up 40 points at the break, as well as keeping the Rabbitohs scoreless. The Panthers made plenty of metres, enjoyed 61% of possession, and made breaks at will during the first stanza. They seemed to be more enthusiastic than the Rabbitohs, and their big men were making inroads into the Rabbitohs half, allowing their smaller men to take control and score from their numerous opportunities. Doubles to five-eighth Travis Burns (11th and 20th minutes) and winger Sandor Earl (8th and 22nd minutes), as well as tries to Sam McKendry (3rd minute), Michael Gordon (34th minute) and Masada Iosefa (38th minute), as well as six conversions from Burns gave the home side their 40 points. The Rabbitohs were finding it difficult to shut down the Panthers and were denied their only scoring opportunity by the video referee when centre Beau Champion was ruled to have knocked on a Sam Burgess off load just short of the line in the 15th minute of play. The second half started more promisingly for the Rabbitohs, with the red and greens getting some ball in the Panthers half and mounting some pressure. However it was the Panthers that got across the stripe in the 53rd minute when Michael Gordon scored his second try, having held out four straight sets of South Sydney attack on their line. The Rabbitohs scored their first points in the 58th minute when Luke Capewell charged onto a ball close to the line and scored to the left of the posts. The Rabbitohs played more directly and made metres to set up the position to score. Sandow converted to take the score to 46-6. The red and greens backed it up three minutes later when Rhys Wesser scored a try on familiar turf. The Rabbitohs earned a repeat set from a quality bomb, and from the scrum Sandow hit Wesser on the chest to score. Sandow converted taking the score to 46-12. From the kick off the Rabbitohs made two hit ups on the right hand side of the field. 30 metres out from his own line, Issac Luke darted from dummy half, broke the line and put Dylan Farrell away to score a 70 metre try under the posts, and the Rabbitohs third four-pointer in five minutes. Sandow converted taking the scores to 46-18 with 16 minutes remaining. The Panthers took the strange option of kicking a penalty goal in the 70th minute, after the Rabbitohs were caught off side stopping a possible try scoring play. The Panthers topped it off with Gordon’s third try in the final second of the match to notch up the half century. The Rabbitohs threw everything they had at the Panthers over the second 40 minutes but could not peg back the massive lead the home side established in the first half. Despite winning the second half 18 points to 14, for the Rabbitohs it was a case of too little too late.

WIN 26-24

Team was 1-17. In the Toyota Cup match, the South Sydney Rabbitohs hung on to win 26 points to 24 at CUA Stadium, after taking control of the match in the first half. The Rabbitohs led 26-10 at the break, with replacement dummy half Brendan McKinnon scoring a remarkable try on the siren, with the kick off restart hitting the crossbar of the goal posts, bouncing back into the field of play for McKinnon to swoop and score. The Panthers kept the Rabbitohs scoreless in the second half and mounted a strong comeback, but it wasn’t enough and the Rabbitohs momentarily take the number one position on the Toyota Cup ladder with other games still to play in round 24.

NSW Cup Rd24

v Balmain-Ryde Eastwood

Nort hSydney Oval

Sat Aug 14, 6:00pm

LOSS 16-42

Paea and Itula were a late withdrawals. McLean starting at fullback, Simpson into five-eighth, Johnston moved into the centers and Hawkins on the wing. R.Apps and Nightgale also dropped off the bench with Molan and Crosgrove added. THEY might be bruised and battered but the injury-plagued North Sydney Bears have pledged to end the NSW Cup rugby league season on a high note. The Bears, beaten 42-16 by Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers at North Sydney Oval on Sunday, are desperate to salvage something from their season in their two remaining games. The Bears, a feeder side to South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL, are missing more than a dozen players through injury. Lambkin said he wasn’t able to announce a full squad of 17 to take on the Tigers until 45 minutes before kickoff. Despite the injury crisis, he said his players were determined to turn the tables on their more fancied rivals. On another note, North Sydney Bears winger Mitchell Stevens has been suspended by the club after he was accused of biting another player’s ear in what has been described as a ``bar-room brawl’‘. Wests Tigers second-rower Jason Schirnack had part of his ear bitten off during a wild brawl in a NSW Cup match last Sunday. Schirnack, playing for Balmain against Norths, was rushed to Liverpool Hospital after being bitten in what Tigers coach Paul Fletcher described as a ``bar-room brawl’‘. Amazingly, Schirnack returned to the field after being bitten before being sent off for a high tackle. The NSWRL has referred the biting case directly to a judiciary hearing, which has been adjourned until next Wednesday, September 1, at its Phillip St headquarters. If found guilty, Stevens faces a possible suspension of 20 weeks.
