LOSS 12-18

The South Sydney Rabbitohs went down in a tight affair in the 2012 Charity Shield tonight (Saturday), with the St George Illawarra Dragons running out 18 points to 12 victors in front of 21,398 Members and supporters at ANZ Stadium tonight. Sam Burgess, who captained the Rabbitohs tonight, scored both of the Rabbitohs' tries with barnstorming efforts. The Dragons jumped out a six-nil lead after just four minutes when Matt Cooper scored in the left corner after a repeat set. The Dragons were camped in South Sydney territory for the first 20 minutes resulting in John Sutton holding Jamie Soward up over the line in the seventh minute, and Eddy Pettybourne holding up Jeremy Latimore in the 12th minute of play. Pettybourne was involved in another play of note, being put on report for a high shot in the 10th minute. The pressure would tell on the Rabbitohs with Soward scoring in the 15th after following through a Ben Hornby kick under the posts. 12-0 down and it was Sam Burgess who would step to the plate. From short range on the right hand edge, he charged straight at Dragons fullback Kyle Stanley, running over him to score his first try. Adam Reynolds converted to reduce the deficit to six. The Rabbitohs' defence was string in the middle of the field again this week after a good defensive effort in that middle third last weekend against the Warriors in Coffs Harbour. The tide was turning at the start of the second half in terms of field position and possession with the Rabbitohs starts to get the rub of the green. Sam Burgess charged over for his second try in the 47th minute after he spun out the grips of four defenders and reached out between another two to score his second four-pointer for the night. Reynolds' conversion leveled the scores at 12-all. The match started two heat up at this point with both teams taking their defensive vigour up a notch. John Sutton was put on report for a dangerous throw in the 54th minute and Luke Burgess was also out on report in the 58th minute for using his knees. The video referee denied Dragon Nathan Green a try in the 59th minute after losing control of the ball over the line, and the Rabbitohs continued their strong goal line defence in the second half. The Dragons broke through in the 67th minute when new recruit Daniel Vidot scored in the right hand corner, Soward's conversion taking the scores to 18-12. Both side threw everything they had at each other for the rest of the game. Soward even attempted a shot at field goal in the 79th minute to try and seal the game. The Rabbitohs had last attacking flurry but the the ball went to ground a few meters short of the line, giving the Dragons their second straight Charity Shield victory. Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire was relatively pleased with his side's display. "I guess for a trial I'm happy with how we played tonight," "We've had two good hit outs over the last two weeks and we improved on some things we worked on from the Warriors game. "I thought Sam (Burgess) went well tonight. He's done a lot of hard work to get back out on the field and it was good to see some reward for effort." Sam Burgess said: "I enjoyed the contest." "I found it very tough in parts and I think we take a few positives out of tonight." Luke Burgess was a casualty from the match breaking his foot and will be out for 12-14 weeks. /P>
