The Cyber View from the Hill

Best Start in 42 Years

Souths were on a 5 day turnaround from oppressive heat playing a game against one of last years Grand Finalists. Thats was the scene for the match. Madge was pulling his strings with some cleaver rotations bringing in Asotasi and Tyrrell and dropping Crocker. Souths came out and played a quality game that was up at semi-final standard. The power of the forwards game finally wore teh Dogs out and tehn our set plays made the difference. Thats now 4 from 4 with the best start to a season since 1971.

Merritt Equal 10th All Time Tryscorer

Nathan picked up another try and became rugby leagues 10th all time try scorer in first grade. Only another 8 to become Souths all time try scorer.

Walker steps up

Dylan Walker continues to impress. He stepped up into reserve grade and played right center and showed class beyond his years. His goalkicking effort was super kicking 7 from 7 in a strong wind with 4 from the sideline.

Juniors secure Top 4 finish

Both Souths Juniors teams secured a Top 4 finish over the weekend. U16 continue to lead the competition table and U18 sit in second place with one round to go.

ESL - Quality Dropping

Over at the other end of the world the standard of English Rugby League continues to drop. We are seeing a number of blow out scores as the exchange rate and a 2.6 mil pound Salary Cap now almost half the $5.85 mil Salary Cap in the NRL is starting to bite. Bar the top few sides the standard of the game is now on par with the NSW Cup. The ESL needs to revisit its development pathways and economic issues after a number of clubs have been struggling financially.

Round 4 - Stat Attack

This week Souths turned around 2 poor weeeks into a great effort. Completion rates improved to 82% and errors missed tackles dropped. We had a quality effective 1st tackle for the match at 23.0m. 8 errors and 19 missed tackles continued the improvement.

Looking at our left side defence - Merritt-Goodwin-Sutton-McQueen (3-2-2-0) increased to 7 from 6 missed tackles. On the right side Everingham-Farrell-Reynolds-Teo (3-4-2-0) drifted to 9 from 6 missed tackles.

Our go forward was great this week with 1670m for the match. Asotasi lead the way in the forwards was the best making 12.0m per hitup. With Sam Burgess, Lima, Te'o, Lowe and George Burgess making more that 100+m in the match. Defensively Issac Luke was our best in the tackling raking up 39 tackles. With Luke, Asotasi, McQueen, Te'o, Lima, Lowe, Peats and George Burgess not missing a tackle.
