WIN 38-12

Before kickoff in what has become a tradition new boys Ben Te'o, Beau Champion, Jeff Lima, Bryson Goodwin, Tom Burgess, Mitch Bucket, Greg Waddell and Chris Centrone were presented with their club jersy's to the crowd. Also announced was taht Mick Crocker will be the club captain.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have completed their first assignment of the 2013 season, defeating the Papua New Guinea Residents XIII 38 points to 12 at the Australian Technology Park Performance Centre at Redfern Oval tonight (Saturday). Rabbitohs RTR13 captain Jason Clark registered a double, with South Sydney crossing the line on seven occasions compared to the Papuans two. It was an ordinary start to the game, with the Rabbitohs kicking off dead on the full, followed by errors to both sides. With the nerves of a new season set aside, the Rabbitohs tried to settle into a rhythm, with young halves Luke Keary and Justin Hunt forming a combination on the run. In the ninth minute of play, second rower Ben Lowe crossed for the first try of the match, straightening the play and charging hard and fast at the line to score. Bryson Goodwin converted to take the score line to six-nil. PNG struck back almost immediately, with halfback Israel Eliab scoring under the posts three minutes later, following through a chip kick to score. He converted his own try to level the scores at six-all. A great charge from Rabbitohs hooker Apisai Koroisau in the 16th almost led to points, but it was PNG that would lead at the quarter-time break, with Eliab scoring his second try, this time a 70 metre intercept. He converted his try to take the scores to 12-6 to PNG after 20 minutes. Dave Tyrrell copped an almighty hit to open the second quarter, but dusted himself off to get through a mountain of work and get his team back on the front foot. He scored a try in the 24th minute of play, bustling over from close range. Goodwin converted to level the scores at 12-all. Ben Lowe was held up over the line in the 31st minute and Justin Hunt pulled off a magnificent cover tackle in the 33rd minute to keep PNG camped in their own 30 metre zone. It paid dividends with Clark scoring his first try in the 34th minute, again burrowing over from close range. Bryson Goodwin converted to give the Rabbitohs a six-point advantage at the half time break. The second half was all red and green. Five minutes in Chris McQueen scored after spinning out of three tackles to score on the right, giving the Rabbitohs a 22-12 lead. The forwards started to dominate, with George Burgess, Tyrrell, Clark and Kyle Turner all making inroads into the PNG defence, and Bryson Goodwin looking classy out wide in the centres. Apisai Koroisau was causing all sorts of issues for the Papua New Guineans from dummy half and when backing up the ball runner. In the final quarter, Thomas Burgess made a long break, offloading to Greg Waddell who in turn shifted the ball to Apisai Koroisau, giving the Rabbitohs quality field position. Aaron Gray would be the recipient of their good work, crossing in the left corner in the 64th minute. Goodwin converted to take the scores 28-12. A rampaging charge by George Burgess in the 68th minute put the Rabbitohs back into a commanding position, and three minutes later North Sydney Bears player Bennett Leslie scored for South Sydney, making a short range charge on the left fringe. Clark would score his second try in the 73rd minute after halfback Luke Keary broke the line in the middle of the field, putting Clark away under the black dot. Koroisau converted to finalise the score line at 38-12 in favour of the home side. The Rabbitohs suffered no injuries from this game

NSW Cup Trial

v Wyong, Wyng Sat Feb 9 6:00pm

WIN 32-16

Late changes. Vale, Leslie, Jesse Roberts and Tongahai were late withdrawals. This is a open trail for the Bears NSW Cup squad without the RTR players. The Wyong Roos VB NSW Cup squad had it’s first hit out on Saturday evening at the Morry Breen complex Kanwal against North Sydney Bears. A crowd of around 700 reflected the interest the Roos’ move to this competition has generated. Played over four 20 minute quarters, this was the maiden opportunity for Head Coach Paul Stringer and Assistant Coach Matt Orford to runthe ruler over the playing roster under match conditions. The Bears, coached by Wyong premiership winning centre Wayne Lambkin, finished the 2012 home and away season in second position. Whilst they were missing many of their players from last season, the Bears still fielded a useful outfit more than capable of testing the Roos both with and without the ball. Trying to manage expectations prior to the match, Paul Stringer said; "One thing I asked the boys to remember is that we will only get better from here." The Roos started well with an early try to fullback Grant Nelson, who had chased down dummy half Mitch Williams’ kick into the in goal area. Jay Florimo, (playing against the club where his father,Greg Florimo, is an institution) set up the next try for Kieren Gallagher, when he deftly kicked the ball into open space behind the fast moving Bears defensive line. The Roos had controlled possession well until Bears winger Curtis Johnson crashed over in the corner. Paul Loelisi then crossed the line for the Roos. Jay Florimo chipped and regathered, with the ball then passing through several sets of hands to overwhelm a scrambling Bears defence. The Roos led at the first two breaks. The Bears had assumed a narrow lead at three quarter time, but ultimately the weight of possession infavour of the Bears proved the telling factor, with the visitors running out winners 32-16. Curtis Johnson finished with four tries for the Bears, who will again be a force in 2013 when the majority of their first choice players return from Rabbitoh duties. Paul Stringer's assessment was succinct; “Our completion was 95% early. It dropped to 57%. We had 18 errors in possession.” There was a lot to like about the Roos’ first up performance. The team displayed real commitment in defence, repeatedly holding out a bigger North Sydney pack which dominated field position in the later stages on the back of a wealth of possession. Despite it being a physical encounter, the Roos kept turning up for each other, and did not back away from the contest. When the Roos played through their sets, slick ruck play caused problems for the Bears defence. Jay Florimo kicked well early, ensured the outside backs received quick ball in good position, and hit hard in defence. After shifting to fullback, Keiren Gallagher provided a lesson in positional play and courage, repeatedly retrieving kicked ball from the in goal, and returning it into the teeth of the Bears’ defence.
