Late Changes

Hunt, Everingham, Tyrrell and Peats were out. Merritt started at fullback, Farrell on the wing, King on the wing, Sam Burgess at prop, George Burgess at prop, Lowe at lock, Asotasi on the bench. Tom Burgess and Keary were added to the bench.

WIN 32-4

South Sydney is immediately back in the winners' circle with a dominant 32-4 victory over an out-of-form Gold Coast at Skilled Park on Saturday evening. Led by English brothers Sam and George Burgess and youngster Luke Keary, the Rabbitohs quickly banished the disappointment of Monday's loss to St George Illawarra. The heavy defeat is the Titans' fourth in a row and leaves them running out of time to claw their way back into the top eight with just six matches remaining. Sam Burgess grabbed a try double, while 21-year-old Keary scored his first NRL tries with a late pair of four-pointers. Sam's younger brother George Burgess was the other try scorer for the Rabbitohs while winger Kevin Gordon scored the only points for the Titans in the 62nd minute. Veteran winger Matt King did not get on the scoreboard but performed excellently on his return from a broken arm to set up Keary's first try. Souths' win ensures they will hold onto top spot on the ladder regardless of the result of Sunday's clash between second-placed Sydney Roosters and Newcastle. The Titans, who missed a whopping 51 tackles, could be two matches outside the top eight by the end of the weekend depending on results. Adding to the home team's woes, hooker Matt Srama looks set to miss most of the remaining weeks of the season after suffering a high ankle sprain in the first half.

North Sydney were far too good for Wentworthville scoring 11 tries in a massive win at Ringrose Park. All eyes were on Chris Sandow as he lined up for Wenty and he showed his class with a 40-20 off just his second touch of the ball. However, the brilliance of Sandow was undone by Manu Ma’u as he lost the ball on the first hit-up off the scrum. Apisai Koroisau was named at halfback and Nathan Peats at hooker but they swapped roles for the Bears first try. Peats wanted the quick ball and Koroisau slipped into dummy half and Peats drew the defence infield before throwing a flat cutout ball to Curtis Johnston who was too strong for his opposing winger as he crashed over in the corner. Koroisau missed the conversion and the scored stayed at 4-0. The Bears gave away a penalty for being offside on their first defensive set after the try to give Wentworthville a chance to hit back and it was Chris Sandow who made the difference. Sandow called for the ball and targeted the Bears big men up the middle as he stepped past the bigger men to dive over the tryline. Sandow made no mistake with the conversion to put Wentworthville ahead 6-4 with just over 10 minutes gone in the first half. With Luke Keary receiving the call up to first grade, Koroisau was given halfback duties and he showed his inexperience in the position by not giving himself enough time to kick the ball on the last and he was forced to run the ball, leading to a turnover. Norths were still creating opportunities and a great set-play down their right side involving Jason Clark, Andrew Everingham and Darren Nicholls nearly resulted in a try to Everingham, but he was tackled short of the line. With the defence on the back foot, Peats gave a short ball from the play the ball and put Nicholls through a gaping hole in the defence for the five-eighth to score. Koroisau’s conversion crashed into the upright and the score remained 8-6. The Bears were full of confidence and scored on their next set after Hyland offloaded despite the attention of four defenders. Centrone grabbed the offload on the halfway line and looked to score but was left agonisingly short of the try line after an ankle tap from Sandow. Dylan Gilbert was sin-binned for holding down and Norths made the most of the advantage as Luke Burgess dived over under the posts. With Gilbert still in the sin bin, Norths were able to score again and it was Nicholls who put in a perfectly timed grubber on the halfway line to bounce into Mitchell Buckett’s hands. Buckett ran over the top of fullback Charlie Hereketukutuku but gave the ball to interchange forward Greg Nichols who just made it to the tryline to score next to the posts. Koroisau kicked the conversion to make it 20-6 with 11 minutes remaining. With parity in numbers restored Wentworthville began to show some fluency in their attacking game. Norths were penalised for holding on for too long and then again for a high tackle from Peats. However, North Sydney’s desperate on-line defence prevented Wenty from scoring. From the turnover, the Bears turned defence into attack with a line break winger Johnston to get the Bears inside Wentworthville’s half. A mistimed pass from Peats hit the deck but it went straight into the hands of Centrone who pounced on the loose ball and ran into a hole created by the pass to score untouched. Koroisau converted to extend the lead to 26-6 with 4 minutes left in the half. Wentworthville had the chance to reduce the deficit but Hereketukutuku lost control of the ball to cheaply turn over possession early in the set. North's again turned defence into attack and a good play between Johnston and Koroisau saw the Bears race downfield to be the thirty metres from the tryline. Wenty gave away a penalty to prevent another try but Apisai took the points on offer to make the score 28-6 at halftime. Wentworthville came out of the dressing sheds with lot more determination and on the back of some tough defence they were first to score. Gilbert made a break through the middle of the defence and drew the fullback before passing to Hereketukutuku who had a clear run to the try line. The conversion from Sandow made it 12-28. Unfortunately for Magpies fans, that try sparked North's back into life and they started to display the same ruthlessness, with and without the ball, as in the first half. Jason Clark scored with a strong run, one off the ruck. Koroisau landed the conversion from right in front to make it 34-12 with just under 30 minutes remaining. The Bears came close to scoring on the very next set after going the length of the field, however, Buckett was stopped just short of the line after getting on the end of a cross-field kick from Nicholls. Wenty tried their hand by running the ball on the last inside their own half but were unable to penetrate the Bears defensive line. The Bears took advantage of the field position and Curtis Johnston crossed in the corner for his second try of the afternoon. Koroisau landed the conversion from sideline to extend the lead to 40-12. A strong hit on Luke Burgess after the restart forced a mistake from the prop and a silly penalty for a rake on the tryline gave the Magpies a fresh set of 6 inside the 10 metres. Pat Mataele wouldn’t be denied after his tremendous run, busting his way through several defenders to score on the first hitup after the penalty. The conversion by Sandow made it 18-40 with 20 minutes remaining. Sandow tried to create something out of nothing with a midfield chip and chase and the livewire halfback was held back trying to retrieve the ball, earning his side a penalty. However, Wenty couldn't capitalise as they kicked the ball dead. Koroisau created a chance immediately after when he threw a dummy and ran 40 metres but lost control of the ball trying to offload. Andrew Everingham was placed on report soon after for a lifting tackle on Nathan Armit. Sandow continued to be the catalyst in all the attacking opportunities for Wentworthville. His long, cutout ball hit Dylan Gilbert on the chest and the centre stepped inside two Bears defenders to score. Sandow nailed the conversion to give Wenty a glimmer of hope at 40-24 with just under 15 remaining. Any hope was snuffed out soon after when Matt Hyland bust through some tired defenders to score. The Bears weren’t finished as Everingham scored in the corner and Jack Lee-Hang scoring on debut soon after. On the stroke of full time a miracle try to Centrone finished the game off. After Kyle Turner flung out a hopeful, no-look offload Koroisau juggled the loose ball before popping it to Centrone to score under the posts. The final score was 64-24 with the Bears making it three wins in a row and closing in on a guaranteed top four finish.
