LOSS 18-30

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Canberra Raiders by 30-12 at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday) in front of 16,032 Members and supporters. In a mistake-riddled first half, the Rabbitohs gifted the Raiders possession on numerous occasions. The Raiders capitalised on the poor handling, making the home-side go to the break having not scored a point. After a number of drop-balls from the Rabbitohs in the first ten minutes, Souths junior Reece Robinson crossed for the Raiders to open the scoring for the afternoon. Jarrod Croker’s conversion attempt from the side-line hit the upright, leaving the score at 4-0 in favour of the Raiders. Robinson was at it again eight minutes later when he took a well-weighted Anthony Milford kick into the in-goal to score on the same flank. Croker made no mistake with his second attempt from the same spot to bring the score to 10-0. A penalty against the Rabbitohs’ for an obstruction during their first real attacking raid of the half allowed the Raiders to get back up the other end of the field, with Dane Tilse crashing over from short range to extend the visitors’ lead to 16-0 with 12 minutes in the half remaining. More poor ball-handling put the Rabbitohs under pressure, and things got worse for the red and greens with five minutes in the half remaining when Anthony Milford snuck over. Croker converted to make it 22-0 going into the sheds. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs finally got on the board through Dylan Walker, who raced through a brace of Raiders defenders to open their account for the afternoon. Adam Reynolds converted 10 metres in from the touch-line to make it 22-6. Despite the try though, the Raiders went back on the offensive again thanks to poor ball-control from the Rabbitohs. Bill Tupou seemed to finish off a sharp backline movement with a four-pointer of his own, but the winger was denied by the video referee who deemed he had dropped the ball over the line. Some ill-discipline from the Raiders finally put the Rabbitohs back within striking distance on the back of a string of penalties. George Burgess crashed over under the sticks with Adam Reynolds converting to bring the score to 22-12 with 24 minutes remaining. Nathan Merritt looked to score for the Rabbitohs following a kick to his wing, but an offside at the play the ball robbed the Souths Junior of the four-pointer that would have broken Benny Wearing’s Club try-scoring record. Canberra were back on the front-foot just one set later when a Raiders bomb failed to be diffused by both teams on the 20 metre line. Greg Inglis attempted to clean up, but a flying Jack Wighton nabbed the ball before racing the remaining metres to score. Croker added the extras to make it 28-12 with 18 minutes remaining. Croker then kicked a penalty goal with 11 minutes remaining to make it 30-12 in favour of the Raiders. Souths scored a consolation try through Chris McQueen out wide to make the final margin 30-18 in favour of Canberra.

NYC Cup Round 4

LOSS 30-34

Late Changes Booth out. Suamamao moves into the second row, Davidson starts at center and Bronson Garlick added to the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Canberra Raiders in a see-sawing affair at ANZ Stadium today (Sunday) – pipped at the post by 34-30. The Raiders opened the scoring in the 10th minute when back-rower Tevita Pangai Junior picked up a loose ball and snuck across the line adjacent to the sticks. Patrick Mago converted for the Raiders to take an early 6-0 lead. Canberra continued to apply pressure to the Rabbitohs by keeping them well within their own side of half-way, and with the ball in hand, it wasn’t long before winger Lachlan Hurst finished off a back-line movement that saw cross the stripe to extend the visitors’ lead to 10. The Rabbitohs hit back through five-eighth Irae Simone, who danced through the Raiders defence to put his name on the score-card from close range before converting his own four-pointer. But the Raiders wouldn’t have it and showed their distaste immediately when fullback Rickey Gerrard took a Rabbitohs kick into the in-goal before racing the length of the field to score despite a valiant Souths effort to run him down. Mago converted to make it 16-6. The red and greens put themselves back in striking distance with four minutes left, when a chip kick to the wing was taken on the full by Tim Davidson for the replacement to score out wide. Simone converted again to make it 16-12 in favour of the visitors and it wasn’t long before the Rabbitohs would square it up. With a minute left on the clock, a massive Tom Hughes dummy was bought by the Raiders, allowing the centre to race the remaining 25 metres to the line to score. Simone converted to take the teams into the sheds with South Sydney leading 18-16. Canberra started the second half, with another four-pointer through centre Jack Creith, who crossed the line out wide to momentarily steal back the lead for his side. But the match continued to see-saw, with the Rabbitohs mounting a strong raid on the green-machine’s line – Taylam Halls coming up with the goods after hitting the ball at speed from close range to power over. With just udner 20 minutes left, Hurst went in for his second of the match to level things up – Mago given the opportunity to kick his team ahead from the touch-line. The back-rower calmly slotted the conversion to re-take the lead 26-24. Tulsa Saumamao scored for the Rabbitohs, but the Raiders responded with just under six minutes remaining through Brenko Lee to level things up at 30 apiece. But a final try to Lachlan Hurst – his third – was enough to sink the Rabbits in the end.

NSW Cup Round 4

v Mt Pritchard, Audrey Keech Reserve Sat Mar 29 3:00pm

LOSS 18-20

Late changes Evans, Low and Toole were out. Champion started fieve-eighth, Centrone at center. Roberts at second row, Clark and Vasek were on the bench. The North Sydney Bears went down to Mounties , 20-18 in round four of the NSW Cup – the team’s second loss of the season. Despite the Bears scoring four tries to Mounties’ three In an agonisingly close match at Ringrose Park, the difference came down to conversions, with the Bears only managing one goal during the course of the afternoon in comparison to Mounties’ four. Boasting Rabbitohs players the likes of Luke Burgess, Beau Champion, Jason Clark, Matt Hyland and Chris Grevsmuhl wasn’t enough to get the side across the line in a tight encounter. The Bears were also bolstered by Rabbitohs under 20’s players such as Alex Johnston and Aaron Gray. For the second week in a row, North Sydney led at half time, going into the sheds with a 10-6 lead thanks to tries to Curtis Johnston and Alex Johnston, plus a goal to Aaron Gray. But with the Bears missing regular halfback Apisai Koroisau – who would fill in for Issac Luke at hooker in first grade for the Rabbitohs – the Bears lost their grasp on the match. A succession of converted tries to Mounties put the match beyond doubt, sinking the side to its second straight defeat.
