WIN 19-18

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have recorded another golden point victory, this time against the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval, with halfback Adam Reynolds proving to be the field goal-kicking hero, handing the Rabbitohs a 19 points to 18 win in front of 14,894 Members and supporters today (Sunday). Reynolds' 82nd minute field goal gave the Rabbitohs their second golden point victory for 2012 and their sixth win for the season. With winger Justin Hunt on debut and missing State of Origin representative players Greg Inglis and Dave Taylor, the Rabbitohs started slowly with the Dragons getting out to a 12-nil lead after 17 minutes through tries to Jason Nightingale and Jamie Soward. Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess stepped up to the plate to turn his side's fortunes around, becoming a one-man wrecking ball in defence, followed by a 30th minute try which saw him crash over under the posts after charging onto a cut-out pass from hooker Issac Luke. Reynolds converted the try to reduce the deficit to six points. The Rabbitohs maintained the pressure on the Dragons, with fullback Nathan Merritt being denied a try by the video referee in the 36th minute after he was held up over the line. The Rabbitohs had not finished their attacking raids for the half, with Reynolds scoring his first four-pointer in the NRL in the final minute of the stanza. Five-eighth John Sutton put up a bomb which was spilt by Dragons winger Daniel Vidot. Rabbitohs centre Matt King was quick to snap up the loose ball and pass to Reynolds who scooted 20 metres to score. He converted his own try to level the scores at the break. The two sides then went into a war of attrition after the break, belting each other with everything they had, trying to force mistakes and gain the advantage. The Dragons were the first ones to score when veteran centre Matt Cooper took a sneaky blind side scoot to score in the corner. Soward's conversion restored the home side's six-point lead. From the Rabbitohs next set of possession a perfect grubber, chase and tackle from Reynolds pinned the Dragons in goal, giving the Rabbitohs a repeat set and at the same time mounted more pressure on the Dragons' defence. From the next set, it was Reynolds who was involved again, putting in the grubber that saw rookie winger Andrew Everingham fly through and beat two defenders to the ball to score a crucial try, and Reynolds' calm conversion locked the scores up at 18-all with plenty of time left on the clock. Soward had an opportunity to steal the lead back with a penalty goal in the 67th minute but he missed the shot, keeping the Rabbitohs' hopes alive. Two minutes later debutant Justin Hunt was denied a try by the video referee after his boot just touched the sideline before grounding the ball after a desperate tackle from Soward. Field goal attempts by Soward (72nd and 77th minutes), Reynolds (73rd and 76th minutes) and Ben Hornby (80th minute) all missed, taking the game into golden point extra time. The Rabbitohs kicked off and an excellent set in defence gave South Sydney the ball in quality field position. The men in cardinal and myrtle worked the ball up the middle of the field, putting them in good position to attempt their third shot at field goal. Sutton went into dummy half and fired the pass back to Reynolds who calmly potted the field goal, giving the Rabbitohs the 19-18 victory. Reynolds was the hero but the work done by the forward pack set up the victory. It was an excellent team performance, showing great character to come from behind to get the two competition points.

NYC U20 Round 11

v St George-Illawarra

Sun May 20, 12:45pm

WIN 24-10

Late Changes, Dylan Walker replaced Heyer and Pollard dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs turned in a clinical performance against the St George Illawarra Dragons in their round 11 Toyota Cup match, running out 24 points to 10 victors at WIN Jubilee Oval today (Sunday). Rabbitohs halves Luke Keary and Dylan Walker controlled the game with quality short and long kicking games as well as taking the right options in attack, with the side's commitment in defence especially over the first 40 minutes setting up the win. Centre Jordan Tongahai scored the first try for South Sydney in the tenth minute, capitalising on some pressure built by the halves through their pin point kicking. Ten minutes later hooker Apisai Koroisau scored with one of his trademark dives from dummy half to touch down adjacent to the posts. In the 27th minute of play, halfback Keary took an intercept 65 metres out from the line, showing great pace to score under the posts. The first half points was pleasing for Ben Gardiner's side, but keeping the Dragons to zero over the first 40 minutes would have pleased him more. The Dragons were the first to score in the second stanza when second rower Blake Phillips scored in the 51st minute, followed four minutes later by Dragons centre Charly Runciman's four-pointer. The Rabbitohs maintained the eight-point advantage until the 68th minute, when Keary crossed for his second try after following through a grubber kick from fullback James Roberts.

NSW Cup Round 12

v Newcastle, North Sydney Oval

Sat May 19, 3:00pm

WIN 25-24

Late Changes, Talanoa and Corrigan are out. Hawkins starts on the wing with Nichols into center. Peats started at hooker while McKinnon dropped to the bench. It was a tale of two halves at North Sydney Oval as North Sydney fought their way back after Newcastle built an early lead. The Bears kept the Knights scoreless in the second half to win by a single point in a brilliant match, which in the end was decided by a field goal. The Knights struck first as a cut out ball from fullback Peter Mata’utia to Kevin Naiqama caught Jack Hawkins out of position on the wing. The try was converted by winger Josh Mantellato. The Knights didn’t take long to score again as five eighth Albert Kelly retrieved a midfield bomb from his halves partner Adrian Davis after Kieran Vale fumbled the towering kick. Mantellato converted from right in front and the Knights took an early 12 nil lead. The scoring flurry didn’t finish there as second rower Zane Tetevano got on the outside of Blake Judd after a rushed kick from fellow Knights backrower Marvin Filipo. After the conversion Newcastle were up 18 nil with less than 20 minutes gone. The Bears needed to hit back and they did that through Jack Hawkins, who was a late replacement for Fetuli Talanoa. Halfback Neenan Simpson threw a flat cut out ball to Greg Nichols who drew the winger and gave the ball to Hawkins who crossed in the corner. Hawkins couldn’t convert his own try and the score was 18-4. Newcastle continued their dominant first half by hitting back just before halftime. Halfback Adrian Davis ran through a gaping hole in the Bears defence 40m out from the Bears line and drew the fullback before giving the ball to Filipo who crossed over under the posts. Another conversion and the teams went into the break with the Knights leading 24-4, however it could have been more but Ethan Cook fumbled the ball in open space with Albert Kelly in support. North Sydney needed to lift in the second half before the game got away from them. Replacement Brendan McKinnon crossed over the line from dummy half and gave the fans something to cheer about 2 minutes into the second half. North Sydney looked a completely different side after the interval and they continued to fight their way back into the game. Adrian Ha’angana burst through the defence 20m out and wasn’t going to be stopped as he charged over the fullback and over the line. Hawkins converted and the Bears were back in the game at 16-24 with a lot of time left in the second half. The Bears were almost in again as Blake Judd intercepted a ball and raced down the sideline. Wes Naiqama chased down his opposing centre and brilliantly tackled him into touch 5m before the tryline. The Bears continued to force their way back into the game as Jack Hawkins crossed for his second of the afternoon. Hawkins got on the end of an offload by Nichols, but again couldn’t convert his own try. North Sydney were now only trailing by 4 points with the score at 24-20 with just under 20 minutes to go. A few minutes later and the Bears were in again. Nathan Peats threw a cut out ball, which caught Wes Naiqama out of position, to Blake Judd which set up a 2 on 1 and the Souths centre easily drew the Knights winger and gave the ball to Curtis Johnston who crossed in the corner to the delight of the crowd. Hawkins’ missed conversion set up a tense finish with the score locked at 24 all. With Ryan Carr not returning from the halftime break with injury and Bears five regular five eighth Justin Hunt called up to first grade, the Bears needed someone to step up and halfback Neenan Simpson did just that. With the scores locked, halfback Simpson took a shot at field goal from 35m out and it just crept over the bar. Much to the delight of the crowd and his teammates, Simpson completed the comeback and the Bears won an absolute thriller at North Sydney Oval 25-24. The second half was highlighted by some tough displays from the Bears front row. George Burgess and Neccrom Areaiiti, who were targeted with some bruising defence by the Newcastle side, stood up and put in a tremendous effort. Burgess in particular, dished out some punishment of his own by steamrolling over the top of Knights defenders on three occasions in the second stanza. A delighted coach Wayne Lambkin put his side’s second half turn around to confidence, “We talked about playing footy and throwing the ball around and we spoke only about positive things and getting the confidence back up”. The win puts the Bears on top of the VB NSW Cup ladder
