WIN 24-22

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have scored an amazing come-from-behind victory over their arch rivals, the Sydney Roosters, at Allianz Stadium tonight (Monday). The Rabbitohs were down 22 points to 12 with two minutes remaining on the clock, but two unbelievable try scoring efforts from the men in cardinal and myrtle saw South Sydney fight back to win the game 24 points to 22 after the 80 minutes. In what all Rabbitohs Members and supporters will see as sweet revenge following the result against the tricolours in round one, South Sydney now finds itself in the top four on the competition ladder with seven rounds remaining of the regular season. The Roosters had the majority of field position and possession throughout the 80 minutes, with the Rabbitohs only getting the better of the second half in the dying moments of the contest. The Rabbitohs kicked off and you could feel the tension between the teams from the opening touch. Both sides battled away at each other until two of the Rabbitohs' flying superstars combined to post the first points. The Rabbitohs swung the ball to the left, with fullback Greg Inglis looping around the back to make an extra man. He flew through the attempted tackle of Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce, charging 50 metres down the left flank, offloading inside to Nathan Merritt who ran the ball around underneath the posts for the four-pointer. Halfback Adam Reynolds converted from in front to give South Sydney an early six-point lead. The Rabbitohs gave the Roosters plenty of opportunities, turning over ball and giving them great field position from which to mount their attacks. Whilst defending the Rabbitohs' line, hooker Issac Luke was put on report for an alleged dangerous throw on fellow New Zealander Shaun Kenny-Dowall. From the ensuing set of six, Kenny-Dowall went close to scoring in the right corner, with video referee replays showing he tried to offload the ball before being bundled into touch, knocking the ball on in the process. Eventually South Sydney paid the price for their errors when Roosters second rower Boyd Cordner scored from a loose Braith Anasta crossfield kick. Anasta failed to convert, bringing the home side within two points. Three minutes later the Rabbitohs responded in the best way possible when winger Andrew Everingham scored in the right hand corner. An error from Jake Friend gave the Rabbitohs some much needed field position. The ball was swung left, then all the way back right, stretching the Roosters' defence allowing Everingham the opportunity to score in the corner. Reynolds converted from the right hand touchline to extend the Rabbitohs' lead to eight. Following the try, Anasta and Rabbitohs prop forward Sam Burgess came face-to-face in a confrontation, with Anasta clearly stirred up following the try. The Roosters were denied another try in the 32nd minute when Joseph Leilua stepped into touch on his way to the line. Inglis appeared to injure his knee with three minutes left in the half, battling on by staying on the field for the rest of the half. Reynolds attempted a 51 metre field goal after the half time siren, leaving the scores at 12-4 in favour of South Sydney at the break. The Roosters enjoyed 55% of possession and the lion's share of the field position in the first half, indicating the Rabbitohs had done well to only concede the one try. The Rabbitohs had made some uncharacteristic mistakes in the first half which Head Coach Michael Maguire would have wanted eradicated in the second half. The Rabbitohs had the better of the field position to open the half, attacking the Roosters' line when Eddy Pettybourne clashed heads with Mose Masoe, sending Pettybourne to the sidelines. The Rabbitohs mounted another attacking raid when Luke busted them up the middle, finding Clark who made a charge of his own. Ten metres from the line he threw a flick pass which went to ground, and from the ensuing set, Tautau Moga charged 65 metres down the left flank to score for the home side. Anasta converted to reduce the deficit to two once again, with 30 minutes left in the match. South Sydney Members and supporters held their breath when they saw Reynolds go down, clutching his ankle in the 55th minute. He got back to his feet and played on, showing his toughness in an important game for his side. Sam Burgess gave away a crucial penalty in the 57th minute, putting his side under pressure deep in their own half. Leilua almost scored from the ensuing set of six, losing control of the ball over the line, thwarting another wide attacking raid by the Roosters. The Rabbitohs continued to throw forward passes, and therefore continued to place themselves under pressure. It was a case of third time lucky for Leilua who eventually found enough space outside of the Rabbitohs' left side defence in the 64th minute of play, after many sets of six in the Rabbitohs half. Anasta converted from the touchline to give the home side a four-point lead, their first lead of the game. A pin point kick from 40 metres out by Reynolds in the 68th minute, plus a John Sutton try saver in the 69th minute, kept the Rabbitohs in the game, but South Sydney looked out on its feet after having to do so much defence. The Rabbitohs cracked again in the 75th minute when Pearce toed through a loose ball, winning the chase to the ball to score more vital points. Anasta's conversion took the scores to 22-12 in favour of the home side with less than five minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs had not given up, and long break by second rower Chris McQueen in the 79th minute of play turned into the second try for Merritt who raced away to score under the posts. Reynolds converted quickly to take the scoreline to 22-18 in favour of the Roosters, giving the Rabbitohs just 45 second to mount a final attacking raid to win the game. The Roosters kicked off finding the arms of five-eighth John Sutton. Sutton dished the ball off to hulking second rower Dave Taylor who chose to take off down the right hand flank. Taylor found McQueen in traffic, sending McQueen sailing off on another huge break down field. McQueen found Merritt who progressed the ball further downfield before handing off to Issac Luke. Luke took on the defence, offloading the ball in traffic five metres out from the line to Adam Reynolds. Reynolds changed direction and dived over adjacent to the posts, thumping the rabbit on his chest, showing his pride in scoring the winning try for his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs! With scores locked at 22-all, Reynolds calmly slotted the conversion, giving the brave men in cardinal and myrtle a superb victory over their neighbours, one that no Rabbitohs Member or supporter will ever forget!

NYC U20 Round 19

v Sydney

Mon Jul 16, 4:45pm

LOSS 30-36

Late Changes Gray replaced Hedley. Turner started at prop. Ha'angana started on the bench. Roberts started fullback and Phillips on the wing. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to arch-rivals, the Sydney Roosters, in tonight's Toyota Cup under 20s clash at Allianz Stadium, 36 points to 30. The Rabbitohs were on fire early, scoring two tries in the first ten minutes to shoot out to a 12-nil lead. A third minute try to second rower Brad Croad was followed six minutes later with a try to winger Aaron Gray, hooker Apisai Koroisau converting both to establish the handy lead. The end-to-end football for the remainder of the half saw the Roosters gain the ascendency, running in four tries in 25 minutes to go into the break 24 points to 12 up. South Sydney started the second half the same way they started the first, a long bust from prop Adrian Ha'angana setting up the field position for Luke Keary's 42nd minute try. Keary grubber kicked, bouncing the ball off the upright. The Roosters failed to ground the ball in-goal, leaving Keary to pounce for the four-pointer. Koroisau converted reducing the deficit to six early in the second stanza. The Roosters scored tries in the 47th and 60th minutes through Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jack Siejka, with one conversion to Chris Taripo extending the home side's lead to 34-18. Koroisau began a late revival for the Rabbitohs, scoring two tries in the 66th and 68th minutes, converting both to bring the Rabbitohs within four points with ten minutes to go. The Roosters sealed the win with a penalty goal to Taripo, finalising the scores at 36-30.

NSW Cup Round 19

v Manly-Warringah, Brookvale Oval

Sat Jul 14, 3:00pm

WIN 46-12

Late changes Tyrrell started prop, Lowe started Lock, Hawkins started fullback and Hunt five-eight. Areaiiti and Starling started on the bench. Alley-Tovio, Hyde and Centrone dropped off the bench. North Sydney travelled to Brookvale Oval to take on old rivals Manly, with the Bears blitzing the Sea Eagles 46-12 to end a three game losing streak. It took the Bear’s only five minutes to post firsts points. A strong run by prop Dave Tyrrell, had the Manly players on the backfoot and a shortball to a hard running Blake Judd proved too much for the Sea Eagles defenders, as Judd carried three players over the line to score. Hunt converted and the Bears shot out to an early 6-0 lead. Manly failed to complete a set inside the Bears 20m and the North Sydney took the ball 90m to score their second of the afternoon. Ryan Carr put in a towering bomb, and Curtis Johnston outleapt the fullback to pluck the ball out of the air before offloading to Shaune Corrigan to score his first of the afternoon. As Justin Hunt lined up and missed the conversion, Manly player Ben Falcone was receiving treatment from the trainers before being assisted from the field after being injured in the contest for the high ball. North Sydney were almost in again through their set play, Brendan McKinnon scooted out of dummy half before giving a long ball to Ryan Carr who gave an immediate short inside ball to dynamic five-eighth Justin Hunt who broke the line and took on defender Scott Blanch in a race to the corner. Blanch caught up to Hunt and pulled off a miraculous covering tackle to bundle Hunt out of the field of play metres short of the tryline. Blanch’s heroics failed to spark the Manly side into action as the Bears continued to dominate field position through Ryan Carr’s kicking game on the back of good build up through the Bear’s front row rotation. North Sydney continued to punish their rival’s ill-discipline, scoring after being assisted downfield after an offside penalty. A sweeping backline movement 40m out went to Fetuli Talanoa who weaved inside his opposite defender before offloading to Nichols who drew the recovering defenders before giving the ball to Justin Hunt who finished off the play with a try. Hunt converted his own try to give the Bears a 16-0 lead with thirteen minutes left in the first half. Manly hit back through Blanch as he stepped and dodged defenders before offloading to !!24!! who planted the ball down to give the Manly players a hope of a comeback. Captain Liam Foran nailed the conversion to get the Manly team back in the game at 16-6 with the first half winding down. Back to back repeat sets with minutes left in the first half got the Bears in field position, with replacement Matt Hyland completing the scoring in the first half. The Sea Eagles defence look destined to crack as the Bear’s charged their line, Brendan McKinnon scooted out of dummy half and gave a flat, cut-out ball to Hyland who crashed over next to the posts. Hunt converted and the two teams went into the break with the Bears leading their arch rivals 22-6. The second half started much like first half ended, with the majority of the game being played in Manly’s half. Ten minutes of relentless attack proved too much for the Sea Eagles and it was no surprise that the Bears were the first team to score in the second half. Another Ryan Carr bomb led to a high ball contest which again Curtis Johnston won, Johnston was unable to put the ball down himself so he offloaded to Corrigan who put the ball down for his second try. Hunt converted and extended the lead to 28-6. Manly needed to score next to have any hope of salvaging the game and they done so through winger Michael Chapman. The Sea Eagles went close to scoring under the posts but were tackled agonisingly short, the ball went to a flat-footed Liam Foran who threw an outrageous no-look, cut-out flick pass to his backline, who had outnumbered the Bears and Chapman easily stepped inside of Johnston to score in the corner. Foran nailed the sideline conversion to give the home fans some hope at 28-12. That hope was extinguished minutes later when Justin Hunt crossed for his second of the afternoon. Poor ball handling from the Sea Eagles had the Bears in field position and the halves combined to extend the lead. Ryan Carr put Justin Hunt through a hole in the defence and Hunt proved too quick as he outsprinted the Manly players to the line. Hunt converted his own try to make the score 34-12 with twelve minutes left. Dave Tyrell busted the line in the first hitup after the ensuing restart and raced 50 metres downfield to have the Bears on the attack again. Manly repelled the Bears that set but couldn’t do anything to stop Curtis Johnston two minutes later as the rampaging winger again offloaded to Shaune Corrigan to complete his hat-trick after a 50 metre bust by the big winger. Hunt again converted from the sideline to make the score 40-12 but you could sense the Bear’s weren’t finished for the afternoon. In the very next start after the restart the Bears made their way downfield and Carr put Corrigan through a gaping hole to put the centre one-on-one with the Manly fullback. Corrigan could have easily beaten the defender for his 4th try of the afternoon but unselfishly gave the ball to Curtis Johnston to scored a well-deserved try. Hunt hit another sideline conversion to wrap up the game at 46-12.
