WIN 38-6

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have reclaimed third spot on the Telstra Premiership ladder with one round of the regular season to go, after scoring a quality 38 points to 6 victory over the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday). The Rabbitohs ran in seven tries to one, including doubles to Greg Inglis and Nathan Merritt, in front of 24,121 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs looked in control for the whole 80 minutes despite going to the break with a relatively-slender eight-point lead, but they turned on the afterburners in the second half to record their 15th victory of the season. Inglis signalled his intentions from the beginning, literally running over former Rabbitohs, and current Eels, halfback Chris Sandow in the second minute of play. It did not take long for Souths to register their first points, with co-captain Matt King scoring in the sixth minute. An Adam Reynolds cross field kick landed in the mitts of King who had flown above the pack to snatch the ball, coming down with the Steeden to score. Reynolds converted to take the scoreline to six-nil after as many minutes. Former Rabbitohs front rower Fuifui Moimoi was put on report in the 12th for an elbow to the face of Reynolds when bringing the ball out of their own end, and the ensuing penalty goal gave the Rabbitohs an eight-point advantage. Moimoi continued with the loose play, collecting a Rabbitoh high in the 16th minute, giving the Rabbitohs a leg up to head back up field into good field position. This time it was Inglis that capitalised, targeting Sandow and fullback Jake Mullaney in defence, reaching over the top of the defence to score to the left of the posts. Reynolds converted to move the scoreline to 14-nil. The Rabbitohs attack seemed to be on song, but on a day when the Rabbitohs were celebrating the Australian Defence Force, the Rabbitohs' Defence Force was in full swing. Second rower Dave Taylor, playing his final regular season home game for the Rabbitohs, smashed retiring Eels winger Luke Burt in goal to earn a repeat set, and the Eels were looking down on confidence. The Rabbitohs were making relatively easy metres up the middle of the field and the backs were cashing in. It was the Eels who were next to score, with Burt scoring in the after backing up a long bust from Mullaney. Burt converted to reduce the deficit to eight once again. The Rabbitohs went into the half time break happy with the lead, but knew they had to step it up a gear if they were to collect the two points and add some much needed for-and-against points to their tally coming into the last round. It only took five minutes for the Rabbitohs to score first points in the second stanza, with Nathan Merritt crossing for the first of two second half tries. Another repeat set gave the Rabbitohs good field position, and it was Inglis that played the main role in the try, taking on the line and throwing a long ball to the left wing for Merritt to pounce. The video and on field referees denied Dylan Farrell a try in the 52nd minute when the video referee sent the decision back to the referees via 'refs call', rulling Farrell was held up. Farrell made up for it ten minutes later, scoring his try in the 62nd minute when, again, Greg Inglis opened up the space and lobbed a basketball-style pass over the top to Farrell to score. Reynolds converted stretching the lead to 24-6. Next was Inglis' turn to score, his second for the afternoon, just seven minutes later, when he strolled through a gap created by Nathan Peats from dummy half. Reynolds' conversion took the scoreline to 30-6 with ten minutes left on the clock. Merritt registered his second try three minutes later after five-eighth John Sutton directed the play to the left, finding Inglis who passed to King, whose quick hands found Merritt on the wing to score. The Rabbitohs put the icing on the cake in the final minute of play when Andrew Everingham crossed, thanks to that man again, Greg Inglis, again basketballing a pass out to his winger to score in the right hand corner. The final scoreline of 38-6 was indicative of the dominance of the Rabbitohs throughout the 80 minutes, and will give them a confidence boost before heading to Newcastle on Friday night to take on the Knights, looking to secure a top four spot for week one of the finals.

NYC U20 Round 25

v Parramatta

Sun Aug 26, 12:30pm

WIN 54-6

Late changes Hedley replaces Heyer. Matthews started 5/8 with Walker on the bench. The Rabbitohs have put the Eels to the sword in a 54-6 thrashing which included a spectacular hat trick to winger Aaron Gray. George Burgess was the big inclusion for the Rabbitohs as they went chasing seventh spot on the ladder. Needing a victory to guarantee they'd remain in the top eight, the Rabbitohs started brightly with David Sisifa crossing in the right corner in just the fourth minute. Apisai Koroisau converted for an early 6-0 lead. Brad Croad extended the lead just five minutes later when close to the line, Luke Keary drew and passed and Croad faced a sole Eels' defender. He had too much momentum and crashed over for the second try which Koroisau duly converted. Luke Keary's short kicking game was causing all sorts of trouble for the Eels as he forced several line dropouts but it was his running game that was to lead to points. With a typical 'show and go' he broke through the line, palmed off two defenders, sprinting 50 metres to score. Koroisau converted and the Rabbitohs led 18-0 after 23 minutes. The lead was soon extended, with the Eels falling off several tackles and the ball was fed wide to Aaron Gray for an easy four-pointer and a 22-0 lead. The Eels soon hit back when five-eighth Mitchell Brasington skipped through some confused defence and converted his own try to reduce the defect to 22-6 with eight minutes left in the half. The Eels were given a few chances late in the half but the Rabbitohs' defence held firm and they took a 22-6 lead into the break. Jordan Tongahai opened the scoring in the second half with a barnstorming try down the left wing and just a minute later made it a double when he easily slid through Parramatta's line to dot down under the posts. Koroisau converted the second and the Rabbitohs led 32-6 with 30 minutes remaining in the half. George Burgess looked back to his best with a number of strong runs and it was his power combined with a quick play the ball that allowed Keary to put Jesse Roberts in under the posts in the 60th minute. Dylan Walker converted from in front for a 38-6 lead. The game was well and truly over but the Rabbitohs scored another two quick tries, the first through Tyrone Phillips and the second an absolute beauty from Aaron Gray who collected a slips catch off a Keary cross-field chip. To seal the victory, Aaron Gray repeated the dose when Keary again kicked to his wing. Gray's hat trick with just seconds on the clock was converted by Koroisau for a 54-6 scoreline.

NSW Cup Round 25

v Newcastle, Townson Oval2

Sun Aug 26, 3:00pm

DRAW 24-24

Late Changes Hyde and Hyland dropped off the bench. Newcastle came back from a 12-4 deficit at half time to grab a 24-24 draw at Townson Oval, Merewether. Issac Luke lined up for the Bears and showed his class as he set up 3 tries and kicked 4 from 4 conversions to keep the Bears in the game. Newcastle drew first points after earning back-to-back repeat sets on the Bears line. Knights halfback Adrian Davis cracked the Bears defence with a long cut out ball to Michael Mate that created an overlap and Mate crossed over to score the first try of the afternoon. Josh Mantellato missed the conversion from the corner but the Knights had raced out to an early 4-0 lead. The Bears looked certain to score after Chris Centrone made a break in his own half. The speedy winger received the ball from Jack Hawkins and Centrone raced down the sideline, Centrone beat two players before being dragged down by Davis, as he went to ground he flicked an offload to Greg Nichols who fumbled the ball agonisingly the short of the line. It took 30 minutes but Norths leveled the scores and it was Issac Luke who set up the try. On the back of a penalty, Norths were inside the Knights 20 metres and Issac Luke put in a delicate grubber from dummy half and Ryan Carr beat Ethan Cook in the race to the ball. Luke converted to give the Bears a 6-4 lead. Ill-discipline was beginning to hamper the Knights, as on the back of yet another penalty, North Sydney crossed over and again it was Luke providing the attacking spark. Luke skipped out of dummy half and drew defenders before giving an inside flick pass to Neccrom Areaiiti, who charged onto the ball and slammed it down. Luke converted from in front and gave the Bears a 12-4 lead heading into the interval. The Bears started the second half with a try to Chris Centrone. After a seemingly innocuous pass from Jack Hawkins went to ground, Centrone picked up the ball and from a standing start beat multiple Knights defenders and showed tremendous acceleration as he beat Wes Naiqama to the corner. On the least preferred side for a right-footed kicker, Issac Luke slotted the sideline conversion to extend North Sydney’s lead to 18-4. The Knights hit back through Siuatonga Likiliki, after great build up from replacement hooker Mitch Williams. Williams scooted out of dummy half and ran across field before an inside ball to Likiliki, who busted through the defence and raced to the tryline. Mantellato made no mistake with the conversion and the Knights were back in the game at 18-10. The Knights made it two tries in two minutes after a rarely seen penalty for a player being in front of the kicker at the restart. The Knights had the Bears on their own line and Adrian Davis took advantage of the North Sydney defenders not getting into position early enough as he burrowed over from dummy half to cut North Sydney’s lead. The NSW Cup leading point scorer, Josh Mantellato, nailed the conversion and the score was now 18-16 with 25 minutes left in the second half. Newcastle hit the lead 5 minutes later, much to the delight of the home crowd. Bears winger raced out of the line which created the numbers advantage on the right for Newcastle and quick hands from Naiqama to Likliki had the centre in the clear, Likiliki stepped inside his opposite centre, Shaune Corrigan, to grab his second of the afternoon and give the Knights back the lead. Mantellato missed the conversion but Newcastle had a 2 point advantage at 20-18. The Bears restored their lead minutes later after a brilliant set play from the scrum. Ryan Carr fed the scrum and looked to spread the ball to the open side, however, Issac Luke picked up the ball from the back of the scrum and raced to the short side before drawing the Knights winger infield, Luke passed to Corrigan who beat the covering defence to score. Issac Luke slotted the conversion from the sideline to give the Bears a 24-20 lead with 15 minutes left in the game. With five minutes left and on the fifth tackle, Knights hooker Chris Adams gave a flat ball to Shaune Boss, who charged onto the ball with so much speed and determination he broke through the Bears defence and scored the equaliser. With the game in the balance, Josh Mantellato lined up the conversion halfway between the sideline and the posts, one touch judge went to raise his flag before looking at the other touch judge before waving it away as well. The scoreline stayed at 24 all and the Bears and Knights played out a draw. It was a game Bears coach Wayne Lambkin thought his side should of won, “Our kicking game wasn’t on, if we got a few good kicks in the end of the second half we could of probably of won it. Being a top four side we probably see that draw, and the draw against Newtown, as a loss.”
