WIN 20-12

Physical, aggressive, measured and patient. Four words to describe the performance of the Rabbitohs tonight (Friday) when they knocked over the Sea Eagles from Manly-Warringah, 20 points to 12 at Brookvale in front of 20,510 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs' defence was sublime and their second half attack equally as impressive as they won the physical and mental battle over one of their arch rivals tonight. The first 40 minutes was like two heavyweight fighters trading blows for the world title belt, with neither side giving the other an inch. Issac Luke and Sam Burgess led the Rabbitohs' defensive effort, Issac with his workload and Burgess with his aggression. Greg Inglis looked threatening every time he touched the ball, to the point where the best way to stop him was to pick him up into a dangerous position, as Manly's Richie Fa'aoso and Jason King did on two seperate occasions in the first half. Manly were under pressure for much of the half with ill-discipline hurting them, giving away penalties in their end of the field and turning the ball over on three consecutive sets of six. But the Rabbitohs could not breach the Manly line, and neither could Manly breach South Sydney's brick wall, especially close to their goal line. Both sides came close to scoring tries, but it wasn't to be for either team. The difference on the scoreboard at half time was an Adam Reynolds 25th minute penalty goal, kicked from in front, 38 metres out from the Manly line. Two Manly players were placed on report in the first half, with Fa'aoso on report for the lifting tackle on Inglis in the 19th minute and Brett Stewart for lifting an elbow/forearm into the face of Andrew Everingham behind play in the 29th minute. The shot out of the blocks in the second half, registering the first points of the half in the first minute of the half. It was the man who is fast becoming the most dangerous man in the NRL, Greg Inglis, who would score the points, after hitting a hole created by his five-eighth John Sutton. Inglis would bump off one defender and trample over Brett Stewart on his way to the left hand corner. Reynolds converted from the eastern touchline to establish an eight-nil lead. Three minutes later Fa'aoso would find himself on report, again, after lifting Inglis and dropping him on his head, again. That would give the Rabbitohs great field position and another scoring opportunity, and this time it was Sutton who would stroll over in the 46th minute. Reynolds converted from a position adjacent to the posts to extend the lead to 14. Shortly after, George Burgess would take the ball up, being collected by a swinging high shot from Manly centre Steve Matai. Push and shove after the tackle led to George's big brother Sam throwing a flurry of punches against numerous maroon opponents, and Matai would become the third Manly player to be put on report for the match. It was at this point that the Rabbitohs would take the next step in development. The Sea Eagles lost their cool, and couldn't get it back. The Rabbitohs, however, rediscovered their cool heads, and went on to show enormous discipline as the game got more spiteful, and went on to post more points. Those points came through centre Beau Champion, who made the most of a clever tap back by Andrew Everingham of a Reynolds bomb to score in the right corner. Reynolds made easy work of the difficuly conversion and extended the lead to 20-nil. Manly got their groove back after 60 minutes and post two tries through Anthony Watmough in the 62nd minute and Daly Cherry-Evans in the 72nd minute. Jamie Lyon converted both tries to reduce the deficit to eight. The Rabbitohs seemed to be in a slump and Manly were gaining confidence, but the Sea Eagles seemed to lose direction and panic as they were forced to play some catch up football. David 'Wolfman' Williams, under a big full moon over the eastern hill, knocked on over the line in the 75th minute, and prop forward Brent Kite put in an unusual grubber kick which flew over the dead ball line. The Rabbitohs held out the Sea Eagles and recorded a well-fought out 20 points to 12 victory over their rivals from the northern beaches. The Rabbitohs defence was sublime for about 65 minutes of this game. Special mention needs to go centre Bryson Goodwin who nullified Jamie Lyon all night, as well as John Sutton who defended strongly and played a hand in most of the Rabbitohs' scoring opportunities.

NYC Cup Round 7

5:15pm

WIN 16-12

Late Changes Watts and Vlahos were out. Backline reschuffle occurred. Hazard started half, Hawkes started five-eighth, Hedley in the center. Woulf started in the second row. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have held on to a tight 16-12 lead to record a four-point victory over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval tonight (Friday). The young Rabbitohs trailed by two points at half time and finished over the top of the Sea Eagles to record their second win of the season. The Rabbitohs had the Sea Eagles under plenty of pressure in the opening ten minutes of the match, but it was Manly who were first to score in the 12th through front-rower James Mirceski. Clinton Gutherson converted to give the home side a six-nil lead. The Rabbitohs struck back six minutes later when winger Will Paterson scored from a neat cross field kick. Paterson converted his own try to level the scores at six-all. Manly scored their second try through their other front rower Jake Trobjevic in the 34th minute, and Gutherson's conversion restored the Sea Eagles' six-point lead. South Sydney scored their second try in the final minute of the first half with centre Jordan Heyer crossing in the left hand corner to take the score line to 12-10 in favour of Manly-Warringah at half time. The Rabbitohs started the second half strongly, with five-eighth Jaiden Hawkes pulling off a cracking try saving tackle in the 48th minute, followed by a try to co-captain Cameron McInnes in the 54th minute. The Rabbitohs had numbers to the left, but McInnes, who was stationed at first receiver, dummied and went himself, carrying three defenders over the line to score. Paterson converted to establish a 16-12 lead with 25 minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs' goal line defence was particularly strong for the next period of play, holding out the Sea Eagles on a number of occasions, whilst managing to mount some pressure of their own at the opposite end of the field. South Sydney were denied a 90 metre try with less than two minutes to go, and then defended their line galantly to hold out the Sea Eagles and record a nail-biting 16-12 victory.

NSW Cup Round 7

v Wentworthville, North Sydney Oval Sun Apr 28 3:00pm

WIN 46-18

Late Changes Evans, Farrell, Groom and Tuivaii were out. Hunt started at fullback, D.Nicholls as (c) and five-eighth, Starling at prop, Fepulai at hooker, Leslie in the Second Row.Lupi, Koroisau and Turner staretd on the bench. The North Sydney Bears continued their impressive run of six consecutive wins as they beat Wentworthville by 46 points to 18 in front of a big crowd at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. North Sydney’s halves combination of Luke Keary and Darren Nicholls dominated the game, setting up multiple tries to help their side to a big win on a hot day. Thomas Burgess and Josh Starling worked hard all game, but it was halfback Luke Keary who was the most impressive. The Bears got off to the perfect start through Burgess. Burgess made the initial break, powering through the defensive line and then two tackles later, with the defence still on the back foot, he charged over under the posts. Dylan Walker converted and North Sydney were off to a six-nil lead after five minutes. Wentworthville hit back when Api Pewhairangi received a long pass, and with the defence sliding, Pewhairangi easily broke through and gave the ball to Brayden Wiliame who raced to the corner to score. Jake Mullaney nailed the sideline conversion to level the scores at six-all. North Sydney nearly scored in their very next set after conceding, when Darren Nicholls feigned to kick but ran the ball and put Bennett Leslie through a gap. However, Leslie’s final pass to Luke Keary was ruled forward, denying the Bears a great try. A penalty for a dangerous tackle from Taulima Tautai on Matt Hyland put the Bears in good field position and the Bears took full advantage with a try to Shaune Corrigan. Darren Nicholls threw a long ball to Justin Hunt and Hunt’s quick catch and pass created the overlap for Corrigan to score in the corner. Walker’s conversion made it 12-6 with just over fifteen minutes remaining in the first half. The Bears received consecutive penalties for infringements in the ruck, however, they missed an opportunity when winger Mitchell Buckett couldn’t control Justin Hunt’s grubber in the in-goal. A brilliant show and go from Luke Keary brought the crowd to their feet as he split the defence up the middle. The halfback raced away before drawing the fullback and passing to his five-eighth, Darren Nicholls, to score under the posts. Walker made no mistake with the conversion and North Sydney were up 18-6. The halves combined again with minutes left before half time. Keary gave a beautiful, no-look inside ball to Nicholls who broke through the line and offloaded to Kyle Turner to stretch out and score. Luke Keary wasn’t finished terrorising the Magpies defence just yet. Another perfectly timed inside ball to Hunt created the gap and Hunt drew his opposing fullback before offloading to Dylan Walker, who strolled over to score under the posts. Walker converted his own try on the halftime siren and the Bears went into the sheds leading 30-6. Wentworthville needed to start strongly in the second half if they were to have any chance of getting back into the game. With just over a minute gone, big winger Semi Radradra found himself in space with only the fullback in front of him. Radradra didn’t even try to beat Justin Hunt to the corner, instead he used his strength to run straight over him and score. Mullaney kicked the sideline conversion to reduce the lead to 30-12. In his first game back from injury, Apisai Koroisau gave away a penalty to give the Magpies an opportunity. Backrower Pat O’Hanlon made a break through the centre of the Bears' defence before passing to Jake Mullaney to score a try to give the Wentworthville fans some hope. Mullaney converted his own try and it was now 30-18. Wentworthville were nearly in again as they made a bust up the middle and Mullaney went close to scoring. They shifted the ball to their right side and had an overlap, Mitchell Buckett rushed in off his wing and made the right decision as his pressure forced a forward pass from centre Cheyse Blair. Wentworthville continued to attack North Sydney down the middle and they again busted through the line. However, the Magpies were penalised for being offside from a kick. Jesse Roberts spilled the ball deep inside the Bears' half to give the visitors another opportunity. However, Wentworthville again wasted another opportunity to get back into the game when Brayden Wiliame knocked the ball on over the try line. North Sydney hadn’t had any attacking set on their opponents line for nearly ten minutes, but they didn’t waste their opportunity when given the chance. Luke Keary gave a ball to Dylan Walker who found Hunt, who ran hard onto the ball and outsprinted Jake Mullaney to extend the lead. Walker missed his first conversion of the afternoon as the ball crashed into the posts to keep the score at 34-18 with ten minutes remaining. Wentworthville winger Ben Fritz dropped a Luke Keary bomb to give the Bears another opportunity. Keary showed his class as he ran the ball on the second tackle and busted through some tired defence to score a magnificent solo try under the posts. Joey Matapuku sealed the win with his first try of the season after chasing a grubber kick. Dylan Walker kicked his seventh conversion of the afternoon to make it 46-18 and extend the North Sydney winning streak to six in a row.

NSWRL U16 Matthews Finals

(1v3) v Penrith, St Marys Stadium Sat Apr 27 10:00am

WIN 28-6

The South Sydney Harold Matthews Cup under 16s side have qualified for the Grand Final in 2013, defeating the Penrith Panthers 28 points to 6 at St Marys Leagues Stadium today (Saturday). The boys in red and green have maintained their undefeated season so far, scoring five tries to one in the Preliminary Final to book their spot in next weekend's Grand Final. The South Sydney boys dominated the first half, scoring three tries to nil to establish a 16-nil lead at the break. Johnathan Tufuga scored the first try after five minutes, followed by an 18th minute try to Reimis Smith and a 26th minute try to Cameron Murray. Siosifa Talakai converted the first and third tries to establish the 16 point advantage. Jaiden Brown was strong in the halves, directing the play for the boys in red and green. South Sydney started the half on fire with prop Gabriel Hamlin collecting a Jaiden Brown grubber kick for a try. Talakai converted to take the score out to 22-nil after 31 minutes. The Panthers struck back in the 35th minute when centre Liam Murray scored next to the posts. Jonah Metuangaro converted taking the score to 22-6. Talakai extended the lead in the 46th minute with a penalty goal, taking the score out to 24-6 with less than a quarter of the game to go. With ten minutes to go, the South Sydney boys made the most of a Penrith error, with Reimis Smith scoring his try to take the score line out to 28-6. Both sides wound down the clock, and the boys in red and green secured their spot in the Grand Final with a comfortable 22 point win. Best for South Sydney were Brown, Smith, Talakai, Hamlin and Nat Butcher.
