WIN 32-18
SOUTH Sydney are back at the top of the premiership ladder. And regardless of the result of Sydney Roosters' clash with Gold Coast on Sunday, they will have the chance to end the season there. The Rabbitohs' victory over Wests Tigers, fighting back from an 18-0 deficit after 14 minutes, hands the NRL what they dearly wanted: a final-round blockbuster between the Rabbitohs and the Roosters for the minor premiership. It's advantage South Sydney right now. The Roosters are still to play this weekend and the Rabbitohs will have a home crowd on their side at ANZ Stadium next Friday night. ''Without a doubt, you think about it,'' Souths coach Michael Maguire said of the minor premiership. ''For us, that's something we'd like to achieve along the way, but the boys are pretty focused about what's in front of us over this next month.'' They will need to improve on their performance against the Tigers. Lock Sam Burgess's early sin-binning handed the Tigers an early advantage and they struck three times while the Englishman was absent. Still, that the Tigers' only points of the contest were confined to that period will please them. "It's a great opportunity for the club, the players," Maguire said. ''It's an important game, the last opportunity to practice before … the finals." The Tigers will finish next week. And that was clear, as five-eighth Benji Marshall broke down during the presentation, after his final home match for the Tigers. ''It's been a disappointing year and a tough year for everyone involved in the club, but I asked the boys to play with some pride, and I can't fault the effort.'' Most observers would have felt the Tigers needed a numerical advantage to beat the Rabbitohs. And after four minutes, that is what the Tigers got, after Burgess stripped the ball from centre Tim Simona. ''It was an unusual one,'' Maguire said. '' ''I'll have to talk to Daniel. I was quite unsure of why he was sent off.'' The Tigers made their opponents pay with three tries - Simona, fullback James Tedesco and back-rower Ben Murdoch-Masila scored to give the match an old-fashioned ambush feel. But once the numerical order was restored, the match settled down. Souths eventually hit back through halfback Adam Reynolds, just before the half-hour mark, sparked by a dart from hooker Issac Luke. The Rabbitohs were well off their game in the first half, but they were still in it with a try just before the break. Tigers winger Lote Tuqiri's air-swing gave his opposite Dylan Farrell the try from Reynolds' kick. Seven minutes into the second half, the Rabbitohs were level. And it was the man who had been off the field at the same stage of the first half, Sam Burgess, who produced the try. The Tigers did well to hold the Rabbitohs out for much of the second half. Their toil was highlighted by Tedesco's wonderful tackle on a flying Nathan Merritt. But four minutes later, a penalty against Marshall after the officials ruled a strip on five-eighth John Sutton gave the Rabbitohs their chance to lead. Reynolds made no mistake. Four minutes later, Luke's bust handed Merritt what he thought he had earlier, and Luke Burgess finished the contest off in the dying minutes. That gave the match another first; after the four Burgesses took to the same field on the same night, the oldest brother scored his first try in the NRL. After full-time, a fifth Burgess was on the field - mother Julie. ''To be part of a bit of history - from 103 years, it's quite amazing to think, to have four brothers, particularly of that size, play in one team,'' Maguire said.

North Sydney produced a stunning effort against their arch-rivals with a 60-6 win over Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval. Historically, North Sydney always step up for this game and in front of their vocal travelling supporters, they claimed a big win consolidating their spot in the top three. On the back of a penalty, Nathan Peats ran down the short side from dummy half, on the last tackle, and put Shaune Corrigan into a gap with a lovely pass. Corrigan crossed over un-touched and Apisai Koroisau converted for an early 6-0 lead. From the ensuing restart, Manly kicked it out on the full, giving Norths another early chance. However, Josh Starling dropped the ball 10 metres short of the line. North Sydney maintained the pressure, and again targeted Manly’s right-side defence. Curtis Johnston made a break before kicking ahead for himself, Ben Farrar regathered the ball but was dragged over the sideline by Johnston. Two plays after the scrum feed, Darren Nicholls made light work of the defence and stepped his way through the line to score. Manly had a chance to hit back after a knock on by Ben Lowe inside his own half. But five-eighth Kayse Greer let North Sydney’s defence off with a poor kick. A familiar set-play with an inside ball by Koroisau to Hunt pried open the defence but a desperate ankle tap by Michael Stig forced a knock on. Nathan Peats earned a repeat set with a precise kick and Kyle Turner made it looks easy when he busted through some soft defence on Manly's right edge. Peats was again instrumental in the next North Sydney try when he threw a cutout ball from dummy half to winger Johnston who did well to stay in the field of play and plant the ball down. Koroisau’s conversion extended the lead to 24-0 with minutes remaining in the first half. North Sydney were finished yet, Darren Nicholls steamed onto a pass from halfback Koroisau, to cross for his second of the afternoon and round out a near-perfect half from North's Sydney, who went into the break leading 30-0 A knock on early in the second half by Corrigan gave Manly a rare opportunity inside the Bears 20 metres. The home side couldn’t take advantage of the field position as Jesse Sene-Lefao lost the ball inches short of the line. Justin Hunt showed his class, turning nothing into something when he returned the ball from a long kick and split the Manly defence, speeding past the fullback to score under the posts. Manly began to tighten their defence and shut down numerous Bears attacking raids. However, they struggled to put together anything in attack, continually having to kick the ball from deep inside their own half. Manly couldn't keep the visitors out for too much longer and after a break through the middle of the defence by Nicholls, he drew the fullback before passing to Hunt who strolled over for his second of the afternoon. On the very next set, Koroisau launched an enormous bomb and Matt King won the battle for the ball and dived over. Koroisau continued his perfect afternoon with the boot, extending the lead to 48-0. After a knock on from Ben Lowe, Manly finally got on the board with Clint Gutherson busting through Andrew Everingham and Johnston’s attempted to tackle to score. Gutherson converted his own try to make it 48-6 with just over ten minutes remaining. After Josh Starling ran over the top of Michael Stig earlier in the set, the young hooker was slow to get back into the defensive line and the Bears took advantage as Starling was put through the hole created by Stig to score. Matt King rounded out the scoring for North Sydney, racing 50 metres to score beside the post after Johnston and Hunt had Manly on the backfoot after great runs. Apisai Koroisau nailed his tenth conversion from ten attempts to make the score 60-6 to equal their highest score against their local rivals. In Round 26, things don't get much easier for Manly as they finish their season with a trip north to take on the Knights while the Bears return to North Sydney Oval to tackle the Vulcans.
