WIN 20-16

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have taken the two points in a thrilling Round 21 clash this evening at ANZ Stadium against the Panthers by 20-16 in front of 13,391 Members and supporters. The ‘down to the wire’ win consolidates Souths’ place in the top four on 28 competition points, separating them from the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks on the ladder who are now on 26 points. Greg Inglis notched up his 100th Rabbitohs game – becoming the 19th player in history play 100 games for two Clubs (Rabbitohs & Storm). Just three minutes in, a towering torpedo bomb from Adam Reynolds into the corner of Robert Jennings yielded a mistake from the young winger, gifting possession to the Rabbitohs in perfect field position. But as the Rabbitohs looked to mount an attack, a rare Reynolds mistake let the Panthers off the hook. Penrith got their chance at the other end of the field moments later, but in similar fashion to the Rabbitohs, a mistake diffused the opportunity. It would be another mistake though – this time from the Rabbitohs – that would result in first points being scored, after a Luke Keary final-tackle kick went out on the full. The Panthers went straight on the attack and by final tackle, James Segeyaro burrowed over from dummy half. Jamie Soward added the extras to make it 6-0. An error-riddled ensuing 10 minutes saw the Panthers achieve the upper hand, and it wasn’t long before Bryce Cartwright crashed over for his sides second from close range. Soward converted to take the score to 12-0 in favour of the Panthers. With 14 minutes remaining in the first half and Kyle Turner coming on as a replacement amid thunderous applause, the Rabbitohs finally hit back through John Sutton, who put in a beautiful left-foot step close to the line before crashing over. Adam Reynolds added the extras to narrow the gap at 12-6. After an enthusiastic set in attack, the Rabbitohs pinned the Panthers inside their own 10 metres with some impeccable defence. Penrith desperately tried to offload in an attempt to get the ball out of danger, but the ball would go loose for the Rabbitohs before swinging out to Alex Johnston to score a brilliant try in the corner. Reynolds was on song with the boot to equalise at 12 apiece. An arm-wrestle ensued, with the Rabbitohs looking to be slightly ahead in terms of momentum right up until half-time when some hot-potato football almost yielded a try for George Burgess. But the teams would ultimately go to the sheds locked at 12 apiece. On the resumption, Rugby League fans everywhere collectively held their breaths when Kyle Turner – playing in his return match from major neck surgery – was knocked out just minutes into the second stanza. The returning forward seemed to be out cold for an extended period, but as the young-gun – now wearing a protective neck-brace – got to his feet and left the field, fans of all colours rose to their feet to cheer. A penalty to the Rabbitohs within kicking distance saw Reynolds take full advantage by opting to kick – the halfback putting his team ahead for the first time in the match with his penalty-goal to make it 14-12. Reynolds was disallowed a try by the video referee on the grounds of a two on one strip in the goal, but the Rabbitohs continued to show plenty of grit in defence – the side dragging Panthers attackers over the touch-line. But in a similar vein, the Panthers were showing equal determination to keep the red and greens at bay. An Issac Luke break down-field on a kick-return set the ball in motion for a crucial four-pointer to the Rabbitohs, with the men in red and green showing great determination and will-power to eventually create an overlap and put Dylan Walker in for a try. Reynolds made no mistake with the all-important conversion to give his side an eight-point buffer at 20-12. The Panthers weren’t dead yet though, with the side managing to conjure a try out of nothing when Lewis Brown finished off a bizarre final-tackle movement to make it 20-16 to round out the match.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 21

v Penrith, 1:45pm

LOSS 10-34

Late Changes - Tangiiti is out, McCudden starts second row.

The Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Penrith Panthers this afternoon at ANZ Stadium by 34-10. The Rabbitohs proved defensively solid in the opening 10 minutes of proceedings, surviving an early Panthers onslaught on the back of series of penalty’s to the visitors in quick succession. By the 13th minute, Souths were defying the first-placed Panthers when a short-side attacking play saw winger Devon Makoare-Boyce slide over in the corner to take the lead. Eli Levido converted from the touch-line to give the home-side a six-point lead. With 17 minutes in the first half remaining, Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards pounced on a kick into the in-goal to score. Nathan Cleary’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Rabbitohs leading 6-4. But the Panthers would atone almost immediately, with Kade Ellis taking advantage of a disjointed Rabbitohs defensive line from close range to score to make it 8-4 in Penrith’s favour. Just two minutes from half-time, Corey Harawira-Naera crossed for the Panthers to extend the lead to 12-6 – Nathan Cleary again missing the conversion to take the teams into the sheds. After the break, the Panthers got on the front foot within six minutes when replacement forward, Thomson Tuigimala raced through a gap in the red and green defence to score next to the sticks. Cleary kicked his first conversion of the afternoon to make it 18-6. Despite the string of Panthers tries, the Rabbitohs were unperturbed, going straight back on the attack in search of points. They would come in the form of Josh Ellison streaking down the touch-line in pursuit of a grubber-kick in-goal to make it 18-10. But while the resurgence proved vital on the scoreboard, on-field, the Rabbitohs would endure a set-back when Tevita Cotrell was sin-binned with 24 minutes in the match remaining – the man down proving costly immediately. The Panthers marched up-field with gusto from the ensuing set, with Edwards ultimately grabbing his second of the afternoon as a result just millimetres inside touch. Cleary’s afternoon with the boot improved to kick his team a further two points ahead to 24-10. Fuimanu Enese and Jarome Luai then grabbed a try apiece in quick succession for the Panthers to extend the lead further

WIN 36-16

Late Changes - Millard, C.Walker and Brown, Lee an Manuleleua are out. Olive starts fullback, Schmaukel center, Carter five-eighth, Clark prop, Sorensen hooker, Whitelaw lock. With Wall an Hyalnd added to the bench.

The North Sydney Bears have defeated the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 36-16 to elevate themselves into the NSW Cup top eight on 22 competition points. After going to the break down by 12-6, the Bears put on a controlled second half showing to signal their intentions for the rest of the NSW Cup competition. After an opening 15 minutes that saw the Bears keep the Dogs well inside their own side of half-way, Canterbury replacement George Tsikrikas barged his way over the line by spinning out of a tackle to plant the ball down. Chase Stanley added the extras to make it 6-0. Not long afterwards, a fruitless attacking raid from the Bears saw the men in red and black turn the ball over on the last tackle. But with the Dogs attempting to get out of their own red-zone, the Bears showed brilliant defence to push the blue and whites back into the in-goal to force a line drop-out. The play would prove vital two tackles later when Darren Nicholls kicked to the corner of Bernard Gregorius – the unmarked winger plucking the ball out of the air to score an amazing try. Nicholls added the extras just inside touch to level the scores at six apiece. The Bulldogs would hit back though through Levi Dodd – the back-rower benefitting from standing out in the centres to post points for his side. Stanley made no mistake with the touch-line conversion to make the score 12-6 to take the teams to the sheds. On the resumption, the Bears scored another brilliant try, this time through Latrell Schaumkel – the replacement beating three Bulldogs defenders before stretching out his arm to score. Nicholls converted to again equalise at 12 apiece. Schaumkel was at it again two minutes later when a mistake from the Bulldogs gifted the Bears possession in good field position – Schaumkel finishing off a back-line movement to take the lead for the first time in the match. Nicholls was on song yet again with the boot from the sideline to make it 18-12. Schaumkel incredibly made it three in a row from the very next set when he took a brilliant short-side ball from Paul Carter, before racing the remaining 40 metres to extend North Sydney’s lead. Skipper Nicholls was having a brilliant day with the boot, adding the extras again to make it 24-12 after 53 minutes. One set later, Norths attacked the left hand side yet again and came up with points through Kirisome Auva’a – the Rabbitoh bettering the position slightly before planting the ball down. Nicholls made it five from five to make it 30-12. Stanley got his side back on the board when he dived over in the corner after conceding 22 un-answered points to make it 32-16. With the clock winding down, Nicholls put the final nail into the Bulldogs coffin when Darren Nicholls crossed behind the posts to clinch victory. Nicholls added the final points to take the final score to 36-16.
