WIN 16-5

Selected Round 8 Teams

Arthur Butler is a late withdrawal due to a poisoned arm injury that has not healed.

These teams played on the Agricultural Ground in the presence of about 2,500 spectators. This was a fast game between two teams trained to the minute. A.Hennessy, formerly of South Sydney, was in the front rank of the Eastern Suburbs pack and was well placed. For a few minutes the game was even, and then King for Eastern Suburbs, kicked a goal from a free. Ross ran hard along the line for South Sydney, but was beautifully tackled by King. Some speculative field-kicking was engaged in without advantage by both sides. A hard and even ten minutes was diversified by some South Sydney passing. Hallett's failure to pass, however lost his side a chance, as Anderson had a clear run if he had received the ball. Davis soon after scored a try for South Sydney, and Conlin kicked a goal. Webb intercepting at centre ran well for East but was tackled before he could pass. Hann bustled through at centre and passed to Davis to Coxon to Conlin who registered a try for South Sydney, but failed at goal. The game was contested hotly, especiaily amongst the forwards. It was a good struggle between Hennessy and Butler. the respective hookers. Brown ran well for East, but met the reliable Neill who upended him. At half time the scores were :- South Sydney 8 points Eastern Suburbs 2 points.

After a long spell which the spectators bore surprisingly patiently, the ball was set in motion for the second half. Two great runs one bv O'Malley for East, and one by Cann for South, aroused applause. Fierce assaults by East, whose backs were frequecntly set going by Fry, kept South Sydney defending, the bulk of the tackling falling to Neill, who was playing a great game. Suddenly Cann broke away at centre, and being tackled from behind, passed to Butler to Conlin who ran in. Conlin kicked a goal. Bright play by Rosewell resulted in the ball going out in Eastern territory, and the battle raged in that quarter for a time, Anderson scored a curious try for South Sydney. He ran as he generally does, like a bull for the line, and was taken by King, but rolled over on the ground twice without letting the ball touch the ground across the line. No goal followed. Griffiths taking a pass then scored a try, for East. Right up to the end the game was well contested, with plenty of exciting play. Hennessy sustained a nasty kick, but was able to continue playing. The game ended in a win for South Sydney by 16 points to 5. Mr Ballerum was referee.
