DRAW 7-7

Selected Round 3 Teams

This was a highly anticpated 1910 premiership final rematch.

At the Agricultural Ground about 15,000 people witnessed South Sydney and Newtown, play a draw, it being a exciting and exhilarating display in the second half, following a very strenuous but unexhilarating first half. Newtown' won the toss, and Hallet kicked off for South Sydney with a light breeze and againit the that. McCabe was penalised, and Newtown worked acioss to the right wing, but the Red and Green quickly charged along the touch-line, the rush ending in the corner. Mogan forced his way through ,the ruck, but the Blues were penalised, and Leveson, instead of shooting for two points, kicked across goal. However, fortunately for the Blues, Russell got to it first, and transferred to centre, where O.Brown fielded the ball, and put South Sydney attacking again. The Blue forwards cleared temporarily, only to find A. Butler start Cann, who made a lot of ground and sent on to Hallett, to Stuntz, but the wing three-quarter was forced out at the 25 flag. South Sydney were as sharp as needles, and dominating the contest. Cann again secured, and forced his way to within ten yards of the line, but Mogan and McCue smothered him, and Hayes gained 25 yards with a good fine kick. Newtown charged along their left wing, but on the South Sydney 25 McCabe, getting it, booted out, and Stuntz carried it into Newtown territory, being grassed by full-back Neill when going strong. South Sydney continued on the aggressive, but while superior in combined back play to the Blues, their work had its limitations. From the ruck Leveson whipped to Cann, on to Hallett, the centre cut across and sent to Gilbert, then took the return pass, but was grassed in side the Blues' 25. Neill punted up the centre, but Brown kicked out again in the corner. Newtown had a lively time defending until. V.Farnsworth, Russell, and Graham exchanged snort passes to centre. Neill failed to gather in a long punt, and Cann upset him in front of goal, near the 25 yards line. Hallett picked up out of the ruck and sped away fast, veering to the wing, accompanied by McCabe, when tackled he sent on to the five-eighth, who took it at his top pace, and scored in the comer in the embrace of a Blue. Gilbert clinched a good try by kicking the goal from the touch-line. South Sydney, 5 to nil. Amid cheers such as South Sydney men can give. Newtown's attack was short-lived, as the Red and Green were soon speeding goalwards again, but Darmody and Spence got off-side, and pulled them up. A moment later Noble had his side penalised, but Gilbert's kick sent it outside the posts. Newtown kept play in neutral territory for some time, but the Red and Green backs were fighting in their own way to open up try getting movements. Leveson, Hallett, and Stuntz got going again, the sprinter hurdling Neill at the 25 flag, where he fell heavily. Hayes cleared again, and the local men made repeated attempts to penetrate the defence, but without success. Newtown gained a brief respite by forcing. Later Ritchie started V.Farnsworth and Graham, and the only brilliant burst by the Blue three-quarters in this spell ended in the South Sydney 25 by Brown grassing the wing three-quarter. The South's three-quarters were soon moving again, A. Butler, McCabe, and Gilbert passing nicely to the 25. But the stubborn defence of the Blues held them. The half-time whistle finished a half that was largely South Sydney's. Their forwards were faster in the loose, and the backs more often swung into action, though it was a pity to see the ball so often anchored at five-eighth.

Barnett opened the second half, and Cann, MeCabe, and Leveson immediately exchanged passes to the Blue 25. Butler marked 35 yards, out, but Darmody failed at goal. It was clear that Newtown were worked up to it in this spell. A useful punt by Grundie put Newtown on the attack. V.Farnsworth and Graham carried it on, but the last pass went astray, though Russell picked up and tried to force his way in. A free kick relieved South Sydney. Then a Blue forward kicked over the line, and Stuntz forced. Noble. McCue, and Barnett came along, ball at toe, and hard ruck play ensued at the 25 until Hawkes raced along his wing and kicked infield. Butler illegally interfered with him, the touch-judge reporting it. Graham landed a goal from inside 25 yards. S.S. 5 to 2. This success put new life into the Blues, and Hayes set V.Farnsworth going. The five-eighth feinted his way goalwards and sent on to Hawkes, who was grassed. The Blue forwards by hard ruck play worked to within 10 yards of goal, where Grundie picked up. As the South Sydney backs fanned out he cut in straight; brushing off a couple of tacklers, went hard for the line, and scored near the post. A good try, which Graham converted. Newtown led by 7 points to 5, with the ground roaring. The Blues were having the better of the game now, and playing in marked, contrast to their first-half display. In a whirlwind effort to open it up and regain the position Cann slung a long, pass out to Hallett, and the centre transferred to McCabe, but Newtown smothered him and worked out. The Blues were soon racing goalwards. only to be held when a try seemed certain. Hilliard and Spence put in some neat work, and Hallett, Leveson, and Stuntz carried to the Blue 25, Stuntz cleverly beating the full back by a short punt, but was interfered with in following up close to goal. A minute later Newtown (Graham off-side while the ball was in the scrummage) was penalised, and A. Butler made the scores equal amidst great excitement. 7 points all. Newtown strove desperately to regain their lead; and play hummed along at a great pace, with the tackling deadly. Graham missed a shot at goal from a good position. The assault followed fast on either side of goal, but the whistle went, and the teams marched off to a drawn game after a second spell filled with fast and attractive football, which redeemed a fast, but common place, first half.
