South Sydney v Annandale

Wentworth Park

WIN 30-14

Selected Round 4 Teams

At Wentworth Park, before about 3000 people, South Sydney winning by 30 to 14, showed more sparkling combination. Annandale, kicking off, immediately began to press. Over eagerness by the team and 'hanging on'' by Ray Norman prevented them getting over. Annandale were securing the ball from the scrum. From one of those hooks by the forwards Ray Norman began a good passing rush, beating ail opposition until they reached the full-back, and then a forward pass spoilt the movement. South Sydney, all at sea in the early stages, eventually began to get their clever backs to work. Securing from a scrum A. Butler whipped it out to Stuntz, who raced round his man and then scored between the posts, A. Butler converting, South Sydney led by 5 to nil. From exciting play in front of South Sydney goal Annandale were awarded a free, and G.Green kicked an easy goal, 5 to 2. Honed by this reverse, South Sydney put more ginger into their efforts, especially in the scrum, whence they initialed one of their dazzling back movements, the ball going from hand to hand with lightning rapidity, ending up by Hallett scoring in a good position. Gilbert failed in an easy goal-kick. At this stage South Sydney showed remarkable ability in illegal play, viz., shepherding and lying offside, Cann and Spence both being very resoureful in this direction. From a free-kick Green kckicd a goa! for Annandale, 8 to 4. Not satisfied with previous penalties, S.S. still persisted in illegalities, the scrum being penalised three times in succession. From the last of these Green kicked another goal, 8 to 6. This seemed to inspire South Sydney with a more thorough sporting spirit, and effectually stopped infringements of that nature. From a ruck in midfield Hallett secured, and after putting in a sturdy run transferred to Gilbert, who got over in the corner. S.Darmody failed with the kick. At half-time South Sydney led by 11 to 6.

Shortly after tho resumption McCabe, putting in one of his characteristic dashes, scored in a good position, Butler failing at a easy kick. This reverse seemed to knock all the heart out of the Annandale attack. And the spectators were treats to some exhilarating play by the South Sydney backs, several very choice movements just failing on the goal-line. But picking up in the loose Gilbert dropped a good goal. Darmody soon added another try for South Sydney, Butler's kick failing. Annandale made one last desperaie effort to score. The forwards, led by Rosewell, worked nicely tnrough South Sydney defence. Roy Norman picking up at full speed dashed over and scored, but Hedley failed with the kick. Shortly after this Annandale were awarded a penalty try for illegal interference, and Green goaled. After this Annandale simply crumbled up, and South Sydney further increased their score through the medium of Leveson. the kick failing. Play after this was rather scraggy, Hallett finishing it with a try. Brown failed at goal. Roy Norman was sent off the field for misconduct. The last score for Souths came from Spence who scored a "good" offside try, and his efforts in this direction were at last rewarded. Hallett converting. South Sydney, 3O to 14. W.P.Finegan referee.
