LOSS 5-9

Selected Round 10 Teams

Abont 15,000 people journeyed to the Sports Ground to witness the clashing of the leaders in the competition. In a very, strenuous, game the Reds predominated in the second spell, forcing the pace in the forwards. Glebe won the toss, and South Sydney kicked off against the breeze, with the sun in their eyes. Immediately starting the attack, Butler, Gilbert, and Collier swept forward, but Collier was taken by, Garlick. McKivat put his side in a good position by punting high to the full-back. His, forwards got under it, and bustled ahead, but South Sydney held thenm. Scrummed and the whistle sounded against the Red and Green for offside, but Algie failed, at goal. The Reds kept up the attack, but it came back to Algie, who started off, but Collier brought him down, and Gilbert secured. A long kick up the centre was slowly taken by Maher, but McCabe followed up fast, and in kicking the bail kicked Maher accidentally in the face. Maintaining the advantage, South Sydney heeled, and McCabe, Conlin, and Hallett, by shortpressing, rushed to the corner. A brief stoppage ensued, then McCabe was shooting along the touch-line, and got to the corner, when he was pulled down. A Red forward ran it out, but - South Sydney cameback, and Cann made the, pace along the touch-llne, going into touch near the flag. Blocked here, from a scrum on the left wing Butler whipped it out to Cann to Gilbert, who dashed across goal, and sent it to Hallett, who fumbled, but Coliier picked up and set off. Hallett came round him, and accepted the pass, but was forced into touch. The Red forwards cleared again, but South Sydney were persistent, and Cann and McCabe were soon racing ahead, but without result. An exchange of kicks between Mahor and Brown, and then Hallett ended in splendidly finding the line at the 25. Glebe came back at a great pace, L.Cubitt running diagonally for the left wing, attended by Garlick, but his pass in the 25 to the latter went to earth. Scrummed, and McKivat carried it a little further, but lost it. The forwards, rushed it on over the line, and Redmond in a rush for it got to it with his hand over the line. Algie failed from easy position. Glebe, 3 to nil. With the pace very, fast, Glebe pressed again, Maher running up the centre, but was stopped by Gilbert. Play veered across to the opposite wing, and a long throw-out from the ruck gave South Sydney a chance to clear their line. Quickly changing the scene of play Hilliard was prominent in a great run down the centre, but Algie stopped him. Back it, came, to Hallett, who kicked high to the line, but it was marked, and Glebe came away. Muggivan, on the right wing, came through on his own, and when blocked kicked over the line at the posts. Collier raced after it, but when near, the posts tripped, and Darmody and a Red were striving for it. The referee gave South Sydney a free for iilegal interferance, and it saved them. Glebe, playing the stronger game, kept their opponents penned it the 25 for some time. The tackling was very keen; but the pace was a trifle slower than, at the opening of the game. L.Cubitt secured at centre, but passed back, and McCabe darted in quick, and bursting through, had only the full-back to beat, but, passed prematurely when he might have gone on. The pass went astray, but Gilbert kicked right to the corner, where Algie interfered with Collier, and from the penalty Hallett cross-kicked to the goal-mouth. Why did he not try to deceive the defence by a short kick and an effort to score in the corner The Reds worked it out. McKivat drew the defence to the wing, but Hennessy tackled him, and the ball rolled out of his grasp. Spence pounced on it, and with Gilbert came back quickly. The pair were looking dangerous, but good tackling held them. A Red three-quarter kicked out with a low shot, and Hallett fielded it on the bounce, and went for the wing. Sending it on to Gilbert, he cut in and sent to Collier, who went hard for the line, and scored a very fine try after Algie had lifted him in the air. Conlin's' kick fell short. 3 all. Each side was playing five forwards, and the scrumaging was far from clever, but Glebe we're the more successful. The Red and Green came with another rush on the left wing, and McCabe was coming fast to Algie, but the full-back cleared the line. The half had been spiritedly fought out but Glebe, playing with the wind, were the stronger, side, and the faster in the forwards.

Glebe were soon attacking after the interval; and had the better of the opening few minutes. M'Kivat picked out of a ruck, and whipped, it back to Cubitt (now, the, first five-efghth), who beat McCabe, and went ahead, . then sent it out to Gleeson, but Conlin nailed him. Cubitt and Pert headed another rush, which carried the ' Reds to the line. There O.Brown fielded arid kicked weakly to the wing, where Garlick fielded, and was only pushed into touch by Collier, when near the, flag. A long. kick out gave Souths a brief respite, but Glebe promptly returned, and waged the game in the opposite corner. Here the referee cautioned F.Burge for illegal play, but the forward offended again, and was sent off the field. The local team livened up, and forced the play into the Glebe 25, McCabe snapping up and darting through, but he passed wildJy. Butler missed goal from a penalty kick. Then South Sydney came again, and McCabe shot it out to Cann, who cut in and beat one man, but Algie took him when a pass to Conlin would have meant a try. Redmond was cautioned. Cubitt marked cleverly, thus holding up another rush by South Sydney. Back to centre, and Butler, Cann and McCabe exchanged passes; McCabe centreing. Across to the right wing the went, and Collier dashed along touch and sent a high pass in-field, but it was smothererd. South Sydney were very active in attack. Suddenly McKivat came through from his own 25, dodging in and out: He sent it to Cubitt, to Green, who was tackled hard. McKivat got it againn just beyond halfway, and left-foot short-punted out to Muggivan unmarked on the wing. He took it and was off like a shot, with Conlin following him. Hallett dived as he crossed the line, but he scored a good try, largely the result of McKivat's splendid football. Algie's was a very poor kick at goal. Glebe 6 to 3. Then followed a superb peice of play that was resultless, owing to the touch judge reporting an illegality. McKivat was grassed on his own side of half-way, and the ball rolled away. McCabe srted in, and quick as a flash was dodging very strongly down the left wing. Seeing the defence closing in he verred for the goalposts, beating Red after Red with unsurpassable skill He made an excellent opening, and sent it on to Hallett, who took a low pass very cleverly, and moving on, whipped on to Gilbert, who capped the move by sprinting hard, and crossing in the corner far from which the move started. The crowd cheered right lustily but the touch judge (A.Bolton) ran across notified the referee of an infringement near where McCabe had cut in and the referee disallowed the try and awarded freekick. It was bad luck for the South Sydney men. South Sydney were straining every muscle to add to thier score, and the pacewas very fast. The tackling was keen, and the game hummed along nicely. Glebe were, doomed to further ill fortune. Maher had his jaw fractured, in the midst of a South Sydney, rush near the goal-line. He had to go off the field, leaving, his side to fight on with 11 men, which they did right well. McKivat coming round, swerving and rushing well, started another rush at the 25. He whipped it to Peter Burge, who carried it on and sent it to Muggivan who crossed in the corner. Cubitt failed at goal. Glebe, 9 to 3. With time fleeing. South Sydney made another effort but the tactics of the Reds beat them. Glebe were playing splendidly. However, Gilbert steadied himself just outside the 25 line, and dropped a fine field coal making the score 9 to 5. The whistle gave the game to the better side, but it was a hard game, well fought with very little between them. Mr. L.Kearney, referee.
