LOSS 14-24

Selected Round 11 Teams

At the Sports Ground 15,000 people witnessed a stirring game, in which South Sydney, beaten by Eastern Suburbs, suffered their second defeat. The game at high tension was very fast and interesting. The absences of Eastern Suburbs were more easily replaced than were those of South Sydney, who however, led 8-7 at the interval. Subsequently, though they fought gamely, they were out played, Easterm Suburbs finishing 24 to 14. Messenger kicked off for Eastern Suburbs at 3:25, his side playing from the Paddington end, and therefor against the sub, though there was no breeze. Messenger at once electrified the crowd with a sensational run. Eastern Suburbs were defending when Pearce intercepted well inside the 25, and passed to his skipper, who cut across toward touch and then suddenly wheeled down the centre of the field. Either by dodging, giving the "dummy" or fending he evaded opponent after opponent till he reached South Sydney's 25 line, where he passed to O'Malley, whose transfer was knocked frward and a beutiful rush ended in a prosy way. But points came early to the Tricolor. Pearce secured in the loose as half-way, and whipped it to Campbell, who dashed downfield, and then sent it on to B.Dalton who worked out towards touch and sent it Strickland, who fairly flew along the boundary, shook off Brown's tackle, crossed in the corner and ran around to the posts, where he scored. Messenger converted. Immense satisfaction this was to the Eastern Suburbs supporters. Eastern Suburbs 5 to nil. The leaders continued to have the better of the game for some time. But the defence was good. Souths made matters lively, but lack of combination spoilt many a good chance. McCabe, Collier and A.Butler, however were in fine form and gave Easts no end of trouble. The South Sydney worked out, Eastes were penalised for off-side tactics and Smith had a fruitless penalty shot at goal. Reynolds took the return. He ran towards touch and passed to Fry, who skirted touch and in-passed to Coxon en to Nicholls who went over in the corner, and improved the position. Smith converted. It was a splendid peice of concerted play, amd the scores were level 5 all. Some lightning changes followed, with the crowd delighted with the display. South Sydney came away from centre and worked to corner, where Collier, getting hold ran strongly, beating White's tackle, and then dashing over, with a couple of opponents hanging on, scoring in the corner, a very good try. Smith missed the goal. South Sydney, 8-5. Campbell ended a good run by punting to Brown whom Frawley secured before he could return. Heavy scrummaging occurred in front of S.S. goal-posts. The defenders being penalised. Messenger kicked and easy goal. South Sydney 8-7. Half-time. It was a desperat contest with a good deal of wild, rough play unpenalised.

Soon after resuming, Spence had his shoulder injured but played on. The game favoured South Sydney during the opening ten minutes, at the end of which the ball (a fresh one in this half) burst and another was requisitioned. Getting hold at half-way soon afterwards, Strickland dashed along touch and shook off a couple of tacklers. He looked like going over in the corner but, crowded, he slung a long pass in. One of the forwards whipped it to Cobertt, on to Messenger, and on to Campbell, who dived over at the goal-post. Messenger converted, and E.S. led by 12 to 8. The backs had got into position very smartly. The passes were made with the men stationary, for each was closely pressed. Eastern Suburbs, opening it up, now took risks. One of these almost produced a try to South Sydney. In the ruck between half-way and his 25, Pearce passed back for his halves. But neither was there, though McCabe was. He took it and was off like a shot. Clear of everyone, he ran to Kinghorn, and then short-punted over his head. Running on, he was by himself, and grubber-kicked into in-goal almost to the track but in the race for it he was out-passed by White, who is the fastest runner we have seen on the field this season. McCabe had a golden chance of going on with the ball and trying to beat the full-back instead of kicking. South Sydney came again in splendid style. Reynolds secured beyond half-way, and passed in to Butler, who ran in-field, and then sent it out to Fry, in to Coxon, to Nicholls, who fell across amid a mass of E.S. players. This was a very fine piece of short-passing work, though we thought the ball was "hold" Reynolds failed to convert. E.S. 12-11. In a rush by Eastern Suburbs, W.Dalton and Fry collieded, and after the pair had their heads bandaged on the field, play having stopped forfive minutes, it was suggested by the referee that as they were so badly injured it would be rise to retire. By doing so it would leave each side to finish with 12 men. The pair at once walked off like wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Eastern Suburbs swung into action at once. Campbell obtaining the ball in the loose, boke through and passed to Messenger, who made ground, drew a man, and sent to White, who went at top pace along touch, getting away from Collier and beating Brown by his pace along touch. Going on, he veered in and scored five yards from the corner. Messenger converted with a brilliant kick. E.S. 17-11. The Tricolors were now in dashin fettle. S.S. forwards heeled and the ball was whipped towards Collier, who slipped, and Corbert, securing it, passed towards White, who fieldedit smartly and sped like a streak along touch past half-way. Coming to Brown he cut away from the full-back, sped on, and scored between the posts. His pace is unquestioned. Messenger converted 22-11. South Sydney were put in good position through a tricky run by Collier, who was downed near the line. From a scrum, Butler sent it on the blind side to McCabe, who shot over in the corner. Brown narrowly missed the goal. E.S. again attacked, and Messenger near touch, cross-kicked before being illegally interferred with by Butler. E.S. were awarded a penalty kick where the ball dropped and Messenger kicked a goal. Eastrn Suburbs 24 to 14. Mr. L.Kearney referee.
