South Sydney v Balmain

Birchgrove Oval

Sat Aug 26, 3:15pm

LOSS 3-9

Selected Round 14 Teams

In the pre-match build up, Balmain's display was so poor last Saturday that no one expects them to beat South Sydney. About 1000 people witnessed Balmain lower the colors, of South Sydney by 9 to 3, after a strenuous game, played in a quagmire at Birchgrove. Balmain kicked off, and play sailed about centre in water till Collier dribbled well inside the local 25. From a scrum there South Sydney heeled to Butler, who, sent it on to McCabe, to Collier, who cut across and passed on to Thompson, who spoilt the effort by knocking on. Balmain carried play, to South Sydney's line by a forward rush, but off-side gave the visitors a chance to clear. South Sydney returned, and Balmain forced down. Worked to centre, where the spectators were amused by the players becoming bogged several times, being covered in mud. However, Wright drew applause ,for a good run from centre to the visitors line. There a scramble ensued, from which South Sydney forced down. Balmain persisted, and a penalty in front of the posts saw Hilliard land a goal. Balmain, 2 to nil. Balmain at once attacked. A high punt, which South Sydney failed to gather, gave the following forwards a chance to work the ball to the 25. There Murphy secured possession, dashed on, and crossed amid cheers. Hilliard failed at goal. Balmain, 5 to nil. This reverse stung the Red and Green, who soon invaded Balmain territory. But the defence on such, a day was too sound for their passing. Balmain worked to mid-field, where South Sydney were twice penalised. From one of these Hilliard was again successful with a fine kick, the ball landing on the cross-bar, whence it dropped in-goal. Balmain, 7 to nil. Half-time.

Resuming, Collier at once went close to scoring, but was blocked by a knock-on. From the scrum the ball rolled over the line, and Johnston forced down. Heavy tackling play for ten minutes ended in Wright snapping it up and speeding to the 25. There Balmain were penalised. South Sydney returned it to half-way through the agency of Butler. But Balmain now in merry, mood, dribbled to South Sydney territory, only to be driven back to centre. From a scrum 'McCabe broke through and carried it on to the Balmain line, where, when tackled, he lost both the ball and his knickers. Worked out, Balmain marked in neutral territory. Hennessy and A.Butler were sent to the pavilion for dictating to the referee, and Hilliard landed a goal. Balmain, 9 to nil. From this out, South Sydney, though short-handed, kept, up a continual attack. From a scrum McCabe snapped it up, attended by Thompson, who took the pass and scored in the corner with opponents hanging on to him, he failed at goal. Balmain, 9 to 3. With but a few minutes left, the visitors were working hard, but the whistle sounded. Balmain, 9 to 3. Mr. L.Kearney, referee.
