Fullback Eric Fergusen booted South Sydney to a narrow 9-5 Amco Cup win over Northern Division in a quagmire at Scully Park, Tamworth yesterday. Fergusen landed three goals from five attempts in the driving rain. Each team scored a try. While Fergusen goalkicking put South Sydney into the quarter-finals of the Amco Cup, it was a lively display by young Arthur Kitinas which paved the way for the Rabbitohs win. Kitinas was shaded 12-14 in the scrums by Northern Division hooker Terry Welsh but proved a handful for the Northern defence in the open. He won the man of the match award. Kitinas standing in for South Sydney international George Piggins scored South Sydney's only try 15 minutes from full-time. At that stage South Sydney was clinging to a 4-2 lead. Kitinas seized the opportunity when he spotted an opening on the blind side of the ruck and darted over from dummy-half. Fergusen potted a simple conversion to give Souths the 9-2 lead. Northern Division hit back with a superb try by winger John Ferguson five minutes later. Northern Division shocked Souths with their tenacious defensive pattern. They might have snatched a upset win had they handled the atrocious conditions. Welsh gave the country side every chance to win in the third quarter when he won six scrums in succession. Souths state winger Terry Fahey left the field in the second half with a ankle injury.
