North Sydney defeated Newtown 22-12 in the VB NSW Cup Centenary Heritage match played at North Sydney Oval on Saturday evening. There was a good crowd in attendance at one of Rugby League's most picturesque venues as these two 1908 Foundation Clubs faced off. Beau Falloon scores after a show of strength, barging his way over.Nichols converted. A simple overlap caused by Widders making a break down the right hand side, ball was spread quickly and Nichols scored.He cnverted his own try. Norths led 12-0 after twenty minutes and 12-6 at half-time. Then after half-time Samu Wara did a nice exchange with Greg Nichols and back to Wara who did well to twist and turn out of the tacklers to score. Newtown hit back and narrowed the margin to 16-12. But Norths lead for much of the second half. A runaway try to the Yileen Gordon three minutes out from full-time made the result safe for Norths after the Jets had blown several chances to grab the lead in the second half. Newtown's errors and penalties gave Norths great field position to enable the Bears to bound away to a 12-0 lead, but the Jets pulled back with a converted try five minutes before the break. Norths took their lead out to 16-6 soon after play resumed but Newtown looked more dangerous with the ball and had the territorial advantage for most of the tense second half. Norths remain the unbeaten competition leaders but this under-strength Newtown team had taken the Bears right to the wire.
