Reserve Grade - NSW Cup - Round 14

v Central Newcastle Knights, North Sydney Oval, Sun Jul 13 3:00pm

WIN 42-18

After 100 years of Rugby League history The North Sydney Club has attracted a growing legion of proud fans with some of the most remarkable achievements in many a year. A record breaking undefeated 12 rounds, biggest crowds and largest merchandise sales since the nineties and the winning of the Frank Hyde Memorial Shield. And the blockbuster achievement of them all?, the Bears are playing one of the most exciting brands of footy to be seen on field in 2008. Bears Coach Wayne Lambkin and Assistant Greg Boulous have had inform players such as Yileen Gordon, Jaiman Lowe, Shannon Hegarty, Jeremy Smith, Shaune Corrigan and Ryan Verlinden playing out of their skin. "The precision and execution we are showing at the moment is as good as any team at any level in any code, with everybody instinctively aware of what each other is doing" claims Norths Football Manager Greg Florimo. "It's a credit to Wayne, Greg and their team that they have achieved this under the handicap of regular changes to the line up". After some time away from home the Bears road show attraction returns to North Sydney Oval this weekend when they face the Central Newcastle Knights. On public exhibition will be the "Frank Hyde Memorial Shield". The Bears came into this game having had 4 weeks off in 9 weeks. A sometimes scrappy game, their rustiness was evident, where Norths took a long time to gain the upper hand. They scored some great tries, mixed in with some lost ball on early tackles. Norths only showed glimpses of what they are capable of, in the first half. a mixture of poor Bears play and a matter of Newy determination. They defended very well. Wara was the first scorer followed by Paulson. A long break is made passes to Verlinden and he scores. However the Bears got on top thru individual brilliance from George N'daira. But Central Newcastle rallied and at halftime it was 18-12. In the second half Central Newcastle equalised. It was 18-18 for a while into the second half, and Bears looked like getting toppled again. However class prevailed, and Jeremy Smith and Luke Grant kicked into overdrive, and the Bears powered home. Grant stretches out and scores. 24-18. Buddy Gordon scored a great individual try, as he catches the ball from a Knights kick and runs 70m to score. 30-18. A kick to the wing and Nat Barnes did a brilliant bob of a pass inside for Corrigan who scores. 36-18. Luke Grant (easily 2nd best on field) offloads to Wara draws the fullback and passes to Smith who scores. Bears end up winning 42-18. But in the end the score was to a degree flattering.
