NSW Second Tier Midweek Cup Proposed

23rd August 2009

Illawarra, Newcastle, Canberra and Central Coast could take part in a midweek competition next season involving NSW Cup teams. The 16-team competition, to be split into two pools of eight, would pit the country teams against Western Suburbs, Balmain, Newtown and North Sydney if given the green light. A meeting between the CRL and the NSW Rugby League will be held this week to discuss the concept. "The idea of the midweek competition is to fill some existing gaps in the current NSW Cup competition," CRL operations manager Bert Lowrie said. "There would be prizemoney involved, but at this stage it is only a concept. We want to see the nuts and bolts of what they have in mind, but our four centres are keen to be involved."
