LOSS 10-36

The Sydney Roosters struck the first blow in the battle for the Ron Coote Cup in 2010, defeating the South Sydney Rabbitohs 36 points to 10 at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday) in front of 23,149 Members and supporters. The Roosters ran in six tries to two, with winger Nathan Merritt scoring both of the Rabbitohs’ tries, both two minutes from time in each half. The Rabbitohs looked strong early, getting up and meeting their opposition in defence and showing some spark in attack, but it was the Roosters who crossed first when halfback Mitchell Pearce carried two defenders over the line to score. Fullback Todd Carney converted to give the visitors a 6-nil lead after 12 minutes. 16 minutes later centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored the Roosters’ second try after taking an intercept and running the length of the field to score. Carney converted stretching the Roosters’ lead to 12. The Rabbitohs struck back in the 38th minute when noted try scorer Nathan Merritt collected a clever kick from Chris Sandow to score in the right corner. Issac Luke converted the try from the touchline to bring the Rabbitohs within six points at the half time break. The Roosters kicked a penalty goal in the 46th minute, followed by tries to Sam Perrett, Aiden Guerra, and second try each to Pearce and Kenny-Dowall to establish an unassailable lead. Merritt, scored his second try in the 78th minute after a Beau Champion pass put him in space and he scored in the right hand corner. Merritt was unlucky not to score a third, had the ball he was carrying on a 75 metre burst not clipped his hip and popped free of his grasp. Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang was very matter-of-fact in his post match comments. “It’s the result we were looking for from this game. They were far too good for us,” Lang said. “We made too many errors. Unforced errors were the weakest part of our game today, and some displays of soft defence. “Nathan Merritt’s long run epitomised our day. “It was a real reality check for us.” Captain Roy Asotasi said: “They played pretty good footy today. “We were a bit rusty, and we have plenty of things to improve on. “We play again on Friday night so we have to work on those areas this week. “This (result) could be a blessing in disguise. “It’s hard not to listen sometimes (to the hype around a game). In saying that we’re professional athletes and we have to learn not to listen to it.” Coach Lang added: “As the game progressed they were full of confidence. You could see that in the Perrett’s try and Carney’s knock back to him over the line. It was a smart play. “I don’t know (if the hype affected the team). “We’ve signed some new players, but Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess aren’t going to be the magic elixir for our team. I do think we have a stronger squad though. We have the same challenges in front of us as we did before. “They (Taylor and Burgess) showed flashes of what they can do, but they also had a couple of errors in their game. Their efforts were symptomatic of the side today.”

NSW Cup Rd1

v Western Suburbs Magpies

Henson Park

Sat Mar 13, 3:00pm

LOSS 28-29

Late Changes. Capewell and Sayegh are out. Simpson is in at Fullback. Deon Apps has moved into the centers, Brock Molan has come into lock and Fifta has moved up to the bench. The North Sydney Bears have started the 2010 NSW Cup season with a narrow loss, going down 29-28 to the Western Suburbs Magpies. The match was played as a double header at Henson Park, with Balmain edging out Newtown 31-30 in the later game. Poor discipline cost the Bears in the first half, with Wests scoring two early tries on the back of penalties, before scoring a 90 metre try to take an 18-nil lead. Norths fought back into the game when second rower David Tyrrell barged over, and were in again before halftime, when hooker Beau Falloon made a great run up the middle to get the Bears in strong field position. On the last tackle halfback Jarryd Hogan kicked the ball out to Mark Talanoa who was unmarked on the wing and he scored. Wests had an 18-10 lead at halftime. The Bears came out firing in the second half, and were first to score when Dean Webster offloaded to Falloon who found Eddie Paea who made a 50 metre run to score. The Bears went close again when Falloon was pulled down short after a dummy half run, however the Wests defence couldn’t hold fullback Jamie Simpson out as he dived over from close range. This gave Norths a 22-18 lead and they looked to be on top, however injuries started to take their toll and the weight of possession soon swung back to the Magpies. Norths had lost prop John Kaifoto to injury early in the game and Beau Falloon and Jamie Simpson joined him on the bench in the second half. With eight minutes left in the game Wests scored out wide to level the scores and kicked a field goal three minutes later to take the lead. Wests put the result beyond doubt when they crossed again out wide to take a seven-point lead close to full time. Norths had one last chance and backrower Zeb Tawha powered his way across the line, and with Eddie Paea’s conversion the Bears were again only one-point behind, however there was not enough time to restart play again and the fulltime whistle was blown. The Bears made a gallant comeback, however they were unable to make up for their poor start. Players who stood out included hooker Beau Falloon who provided a lot of spark in attack and Jamie Simpson at fullback who made a number of try saving tackles. While Dean Webster, Deon Apps and David Tyrrell all carted the ball forward strongly
