The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 42 points to 4 in their final trial match of the year to the Gold Coast Titans at BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour tonight (Saturday). 6,125 fans saw a lop-sided affair, with Nathan Merritt the Rabbitohs only try scorer. In hot, humid conditions the Rabbitohs started the game off well with the big boppers up front in Roy Asotasi and Scott Geddes making metres up the middle. The Titans however were the first to score when centre Clinton Toopi scored on the right, catching the Rabbitohs’ defence short out wide. The rest of the opening quarter was tight, with Dave Taylor pulling off a big hit on Greg Bird and Beau Falloon defending strongly over the first 20 minutes. In the second quarter, it did not take the Titans long to cross again when winger David Mead danced through and scored on the edge in the 23rd minute. The Rabbitohs were struggling to make in roads with a lack of possession and field position. Nathan Peats was full of enthusiasm when he went on and made some good runs and defended stoutly. The Rabbitohs looked more lively in the third quarter, mounting on three attacking opportunities in the opening ten minutes of the quarter. Poor handling hurt the Rabbitohs but the signs were promising. The Titans scored their third try through Joe Vickery in the 52nd minute to extend their lead to 14-nil before the Rabbitohs posted their first points. Noted try scorer Nathan Merritt touched down in the right hand corner for the Rabbitohs in the 59th minute of play. A repeat set gave the Rabbitohs some much-needed field position. Sandow shifted the ball to the right, with Merritt getting outside his man to score. Preston Campbell opened the scoring the final quarter, scoring under the posts to give the Titans a 20-4 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game. The Titans scored soon after through five-eighth Greg Bird after some great backing up from a number of his team mates. Campbell rubbed salt into the wound when he scored a long range intercept try, crossing under the posts to give the Titans a 32-4 lead. The Titans crossed for two more tries in the 76th and 79th minutes through Steve Michaels and Dominque Peyroux, taking out the Rabbitohs’ final trial match 42 points to 4. The Rabbitohs didn’t mount enough pressure when they had the ball and the Rabbitohs are looking forward to welcoming back a number of big names for round one.

Late Changes, Haddrick started at prop with Jarrett to second row and England to lock, and Matthews back to the bench. In the Toyota Cup, It was tough game in the heat with our forwards playing well. For the first try Matt Place throws a cut out to Roberts who puts on a good fend and runs through to score. A dummy half by Koroisau scores Souths second try from close range. Our Final try comes from a bomb by Place which is spilt by the Cronulla and England scores.
