LOSS 6-16

A committed South Sydney Rabbitohs line-up went down 16 points to six against the Melbourne Storm at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday), going head-to-head with one of the competition heavyweights for the whole 80 minutes of the match. Second rower Dave Taylor led the way for the Rabbitohs, ably assisted by his fellow forwards in doing the hard work against one of the best grinding teams in the NRL. Taylor scored a try and created opportunities for a number of other four-pointers in an effort to knock over the Storm in front of 11,528 Members and supporters. It was Taylor who registered the first four-pointer of the match in the eighth minute of play, flying high to grab a Chris Sandow bomb above the pack. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs an early six-nil lead. The Storm struck twice in the first half, crossing in the 15th minute through centre Maurice Blair, and in the 25th minute through Jesse Bromwich who scored a simple try one off the ruck. The Rabbitohs seemed to dominate the first 20 minutes of the match, with the Storm matching the home side’s enthusiasm in the second 20 minute block. The Rabbitohs were denied two tries by the video referee in the opening forty minutes, one to James Roberts whose left foot grazed the touchline after an offload from Greg Inglis, and one to Nathan Merritt who had the ball knocked from his grasp in the 34th minute of play when he tried to plant the ball in the corner. The second half was a massive tussle for 38 minutes, with both sides throwing everything they had at each other. Rabbitohs fullback Rhys Wesser pulled off a fantastic try saving tackle on opposite number Billy Slater to stop one four-pointer. Dave Taylor was ruled to have knocked on near the line in the 63rd minute of play, however replays seemed to suggest otherwise, but the referee had made his decision without referring to the video referee and the game continued. Dave Tyrrell mounted some pressure on the Storm in the 73rd minute of play when he grubbered into the in-goal and made a one-on-one tackle to pin Melbourne in their own in-goal, forcing a goal line drop out. Nathan Peats was denied a try sixty seconds later when a bomb went up and the Rabbitohs were deemed to have knocked over the line before he could ground the loose ball. The scoring drought was finally broken in the 78th minute of the match when Storm captain Cameron Smith crashed over from dummy half to score and seal the victory for the visitors. The Rabbitohs played strongly throughout the match and took one of the competition’s top teams to the wire. Taylor was strong in an 80-minute performance, Greg Inglis made a solid comeback as he actively looked for the ball all over the park, and the Rabbitohs can be proud of the performance they turned in for their Members today.
