WIN 31-8

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have piled on three tries in six minutes to bury the Gold Coast Titans 31 points to 8 in a dominant performance at ANZ Stadium tonight. 8,021 Members and supporters braved the chilly conditions to watch the Coal Train Dave Taylor turn in an amazing 80-minute performance, backing up from State of Origin II just two days prior. The Rabbitohs dominated early, taking good field position from good go-forward and some ill-discipline from the Titans. South Sydney struck first when rookie winger James Roberts scored in the seventh minute of play. A cross-filed kick from halfback Chris Sandow was collected by Taylor who offloaded to Roberts to score. Sandows sideline conversion gave the home side a six-nil lead. The Titans made a break through Steve Michaels in the 13th minute but a grassing cover tackle from Sandow bundled him into touch, keeping the pressure on the Titans. Ten minutes later rampaging replacement forward Eddy Pettybourne reached out from dummy half and planted the ball on the line, and Sandows conversion took the scores to 12-nil. In the 31st minute play, it was Sandow again involved in turning defence into attack after making a nice steal of the ball before fullback Rhys Wesser made a long break up field. The Titans gave away a penalty within kicking distance and Sandow slotted the penalty goal for a 14-nil lead which the home side took to the half time break. In the 37th minute, Nathan Peats was put on report for a tackle on towering Titans forward Ryan James, and then put a low hit on James which ended his night with what appeared to be a bad leg injury. The Rabbitohs were dominating in all areas and thoroughly deserved their 14-point lead. The Titans looked directionless, with poor handling and ill-discipline keeping them under pressure. The second half started tightly with both sides seemingly going through the motions, but it was the Titans that were the first to score in the 56th minute through winger David Mead. The video referee denied James Roberts a try four minutes later after he was pushed into touch in-goal, then one minute later the Gold Coast scored their second and final try after Joseph Tomane touched the ball down after some scrappy play. At 14-8 the crowd was on the edge of its seats. Smart Sandow potted a field goal in the 69th minute to stretch the Rabbitohs lead to seven points, but despite the clock showing 11 minutes remaining, the Rabbitohs attacking raids were only beginning. In the 74th minute, mercurial try scorer Nathan Merritt after the Rabbitohs played hot potato with the ball on the back of a long break by Taylor. Merritt scored and Sandow converted to take the scores to 21-8. Three minutes later hooker Issac Luke crossed after getting outside his man and using brute force to beat three defenders to score. Two minutes later, centre Greg Inglis finished off an 85 metre try, started by that man Dave Taylor who got an offload away to James Roberts, who in turn put Inglis into space, who then raced away to score under the posts. Sandows conversion took the scores to 31-8 in favour of the Rabbitohs, a well deserved win on the back of some enterprising attack and solid defence. Taylor constantly terrorised the Titans and with the help of Inglis and Roberts on the left and the hard work done up the middle by the forwards, was able to help the Rabbitohs to their fifth victory of the season.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have run out 28 points to 24 victors in the round 15 Toyota Cup match against the Gold Coast Titans played at the Australian Technology Park Performance Centre at Redfern Oval this afternoon (Saturday). The Rabbitohs held a commanding 22-6 lead at the half time break, completely dominating the Titans outfit on home soil. However the Titan mounted a spirited comeback in the second stanza to reduce the deficit to just four points with as many minutes left on the clock. The Rabbitohs held on in the dying minutes to register their third win for the season. Second rower Brett Jarrett impressed with his robust charges with ball in hand, and winger David Sisifa delighted the crowd with some heavy hits in defence.
