WIN 17-16

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have produced an amazing come-from-behind victory at Allianz Stadium today (Sunday), taking out a 17 points to 16 win in golden point extra time over the Wests Tigers in front of 25,608 Members and supporters. To take out the inaurgural Men of League Trophy. The Rabbitohs scored two tries in the final four minutes of regular time to send the game into extra time, with fullback Greg Inglis kicking the vital field goal to steal the victory. The Rabbitohs' Members and supporters in the stands went from despair to jubilation when all seemed lost after 75 minutes of the match. But the Rabbitohs did the same thing that happened to them in round one of the competition, scoring two late tries which led to the victory. The Tigers got away to the perfect start, kicking a 40/20 then scoring in the second minute of play through fullback Tim Moltzen. With it being a warm day and a dry track, all indications were that it was going to be a high scoring day. That could not have been further from the truth, with no further points being added to the scoreboard in the first 40 minutes. It was the quintessential arm wrestle, with both sides throwing everything they had at each other. You would have to have given the points decision in the first half to the Tigers, who seemed to have more ball in better position, and a real spark in everything they did. The Rabbitohs hung in over the first stanza to go into the break four points down. The heartbreaker for the Rabbitohs in the opening half was a medial ligament strain to captain Sam Burgess in the 24th minute. Early diagnosis is a grade two or three strain, with scans to reveal the severity of the injury this week. The second half started the same way the first half finished, with both sides belting each other. It was not until the 47th minute when Rabbitohs hooker Issac Luke dummied and dived over to score, that the Rabbitohs supporters started to come into the game. A wayward conversion attempt from Adam Reynolds left the scores level at four-all. The Rabbitohs were starting to find some space around the Tigers’ defensive line, but the home side was next to score through giant winger Lote Tuqiri. A two-man cut-out pass from Benji Marshall set up the try, and his conversion from the touchline gave the Tigers a six-point buffer. 15 minutes later and Wests had scored again, this time through interchange player Blake Ayshford. The Tigers found some room outside the Rabbitohs’ right side defence, and Marshall’s second sideline conversion gave the Tigers a 12-point lead with ten minutes remaining. In the 72nd minute the home side kicked another 40/20 and Beau Ryan was denied a try by the video referee in the in the 74th minute. Rabbitohs supporters could be forgiven for thinking the game was over, particularly as the Rabbitohs have struggled to play a full 80 minutes in their previous four games this season. However the support stayed strong and the players paid them back in spades. With four minutes left on the clock, Issac Luke scored his second try for the men in cardinal and myrtle. He stepped and jinked his way through the defence from dummy half and Adam Reybolds converted to reduce the deficit to six points. Then with just two minutes remaining, massive second rower Dave Taylor took the ball to the line on the right hand side of the field, and put in one of his deft grubber kicks into the in-goal area. Rookie winger Andrew Everingham charged through and scored his fourth try in three games to give Reynolds the opportunity to level the scores from out wide. Reynolds, in only his fifth NRL game and from a few metres in from the right hand touchline, struck the ball sweetly and guided the ball between the posts to level the scores at 16-all. In the 80th minute, Reynolds tried to put the game away with a field goal attempt, but the Rabbitohs and Tigers would head into golden point. The Tigers tried to bring the ball out of their own end but the Rabbitohs’ defence was strong in the 81st minute. The Rabbitohs then had a chance to put themselves in field goal range, with centre Shaune Corrigan and prop forward Roy Asotasi taking strong hit ups in the middle of the park to put the Rabbitohs in perfect position for a one-pointer. The ball was swung back from the play-the-ball to Greg Inglis, who took the shot. It was touched in flight, and magically floated centimetres over the crossbar, striking the inside of the left hand upright to bounce back inside the posts and register the winning golden point! The Rabbitohs did what they haven’t been able to do so far this season, and that was to play out the full 80 minutes. In fact, they had to play out the full 82 minutes to register the win. The Tigers threw everything they had at the Rabbitohs throughout the match, but the men from Redfern hung in for the whole game, giving themselves the opportunity to steal the two competition points in extra time.

NSW Cup Round 5

v Illawarra, TG Milner Field

Sun Apr 1, 3:00pm

WIN 48-6

Late Change George Burgess started in place of Sue Poe with Sukkar and Vaiga dropping off the bench. The Illawarra Cutters were defeated 48-6 by the North Sydney Bears at TG Milner Field, Marsfield on Sunday. The Cutters were the first to score in the loss with prop Atelea Vea bursting onto a short Jeremy Smith pass to crash over the line four minutes in. Cutters fullback Bronx Goodwin was on target from his conversion to extend the lead out to six-points but it went downhill from there for the visitors. “As a group we need to learn how to grind out a game,” said Head Coach Paul McGregor. “It’s pride in what you do and what you’re about, and attention to detail, and when it got too tough everyone went back to the habit of trying to solve it individually.” The Bears struck back shortly courtesy of Justin Hunt try with the five-eighth adding the extras to make it six-points apiece. The home side took the lead five minutes before the interval through hooker Brendan McKinnon’s efforts. Hunt was again on strike to make it 12-6 before doing so again moments later after teammate Curtis Johnston got his name also on the score sheet. The Bears continued their points tally on the hour mark through Greg Nichols with Hunt again on target from the tee. The five-eighth added the extras Joey Matapuku’s try just after play resumed to make it 30-6. The home side notched a further three tries before fulltime with Chris McQueen scoring twice within the span of two minutes. This was followed by Bears captain Bennett Leslie scoring from out wide shortly before the final whistle. Hunt was successful with all three of his attempts at goal to condemn the Cutters to their first defeat in three outings.
