LOSS 18-23

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, 23 points to 18, in an away game at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday) in front of 19,439 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs lead 12-nil in the first half, only to trail 18-12 at the break. The Rabbitohs had a chance to snatch the win in the closing minutes, but it was not to be for the men in red and green at ANZ Stadium tonight. The Rabbitohs seemed to be in complete control of the first half, capitalising on the 'Dogs ill-discipline to lead 12-nil after 25 minutes. But the Bulldogs fought back, making the most of opportunities afforded them by the Rabbitohs poor discipline over the final 15 minutes of the first half, running in three tries of their own. With Eddy Pettybourne being ruled out in the team warm up with a torn calf, the Rabbitohs could be forgiven for a disrupted start to the game. However they showed no signs of this, scoring in the third minute of play through rookie winger Justin Hunt. A mistake from big Sam Kasiano on halfway gave the Rabbitohs great field position. The ball went left to five-eighth John Sutton who threw a perfect short ball to second rower Sam Burgess who found space behind the defensive line. Burgess gave an equally deft short pass to centre Dylan Farrell who put Hunt away in the left corner. The Rabbitohs were also strong in defence in the opening minutes, making the Bulldogs work hard to get out of their own end. South Sydney's second try came in the 15th minute when hulking second rower Dave Taylor showed the footwork of some of the game's best backs, charging between defenders Kasiano and David Stagg before putting on a big right foot step to get around fullback Ben Barba. Adam Reynolds' conversion extended the lead to ten points. A high shot on Rabbitohs interchange forward Jason Clark in the 24th minute of play led to the Rabbitohs next scoring opportunity with Reynolds potting a penalty goal from in front to take the scores to 12-nil with 15 minutes left in the half. The Rabbitohs started to give away penalties at this point, inviting the 'Dogs back into the game. Krisnan Inu scored the home side's first try in the 28th minute when the 'Dogs had great field position from a questionable penalty 10 metres out from the South Sydney line. Inu converted his own try from the left touchline to reduce the deficit to six. Four minute later winger Jonathan Wright scored in the opposite corner following another contentious penalty and plenty of ball movement from the Bulldogs' forwards. Inu converted again to level the scores at 12-all. Barba then scored the 'Dogs' third try in the 36th minute after a perfect short bomb from five-eighth Josh Reynolds found Michael Crocker's fingertips then Barba's arms in the in-goal, making it an easy conversion for Inu and an 18-12 lead for the Bulldogs at half time. Both sides opened the half throwing everything they had at each other. In what was already a willing affair, a number of scuffles broke out with neither side wanting to give an edge to their opposition. The Rabbitohs struck first in the second forty minutes, with centre Dylan Farrell chasing through a John Sutton grubber kick, diving and planting the ball one-handed with his left hand for the four-pointer. Adam Reynolds converted to level the scores at 18-all with 25 minutes left in the match. The next 20 minutes saw both sides belt each other in defence. The Bulldogs mounted a couple of attacking raids but the Rabbitohs were good enough to thwart them, or the 'Dogs blew the chance by giving away a penalty in possession of the ball. The Rabbitohs were holding on and were looking stronger as the match wore on. The Bulldogs broke the deadlock when new recruit Inu kicked a 30 metre field goal with five minutes to go, giving the home side a 19-18 advantage in the closing minutes. Dylan Farrell had a chance to put the Rabbitohs in the lead in the 77th minute, but it was not to be as he was bundled into touch just centimetres short of the line. The Bulldogs wrapped up the game in the penultimate minute when David Stagg scored, taking the score out to 23-18 in favour of the home side. The Rabbitohs fought for the entire 80 minutes, but an eight minute period in the first half which saw the Bulldogs score three tries was the difference in the end.

NYC U20 Round 13

v Canterbury

Sat Jun 2, 5:15pm

WIN 32-10

Late Changes, Tuiavii was out, Turner startedat prop. Garlick and Heyer dropped off the bench In the Toyota Cup match, the Rabbitohs hammered the Bulldogs 32 points to 10 at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs led 18-nil at half time and 32-nil after 60 minutes to register a healthy victory which sees them positioned in the top eight of the under 20s competition at the halfway mark of the season. The Rabbitohs played a strong first forty minutes, scoring three tries to nil against the fourth-placed Bulldogs. It was a tough tussle over the first 20 minutes with neither side being able to crack the opposition's defence. The Rabbitohs had the better of the field position and the possession, putting the Bulldogs under considerable pressure. The pressure turned into points when hooker Apisai Koroisau crossed for a four-pointer, diving on a Luke Keary grubber kick in the in-goal. He converted his own try for a six-nil lead. Nine minutes later the Rabbitohs scored again, this time through interchange player Siosaia Tanginoa. Tanginoa was on the end of some great team work from the men from Redfern, and Koroisau's conversion extended the lead to 12. With three minutes left in the half, Keary scored a four-pointer of his own, with the Rabbitohs going the length of the field over four plays. Keary took the ball 15 metres out from the line and stepped his way through three defenders to score. Koroisau's third conversion extended the Rabbitohs' lead to 18-nil. With just seconds left on the clock, Rabbitohs' winger David Sisifa finished the half with a huge hit on Bulldogs' half Freddie Robinson, a real rib-tickler, topping off a great half of footy for South Sydney in the under 20s. Sisifa started the second half with a great try on the back of a perfect grubber from five-eighth Dylan Walker in the 44th minute, giving the Rabbitohs a 22-nil lead early in the second stanza. Eight minutes later and Walker scored a try of his own, charging onto a great ball from Keary, racing 20 metres to score. Four minute on and fullback Tyrone Phillips scored a great try, the Rabbitohs splitting the Bulldogs up the middle, sending Phillips over under the posts. Koroisau converted to extend the lead to 32 points. The Bulldogs scored their first try in the 62nd minute when centre Matthew Fukofuka scored in the left corner, reducing the deficit to 28 with 18 minutes left on the clock. The 'Dogs scored a consolation try with two minutes left on the clock to winger Sam Ahofono with a conversion to Robinson, finalising the scores at 32-10 in favour of the Rabbitohs.

NSW Cup Round 14

v Balmain-Ryde-Eastwood, North Sydney Oval

Sat Jun 2, 3:00pm

WIN 24-14

Late Changes, George Burgess, Leslie, Simpson were out Starling started prop. McKinnon started hooker, McQueen second row and Peats lock. Hawkins five-eighth. Hyde dropped off the bench. North Sydney’s early flurry of points proved to be enough as the ladder leaders beat Balmin-Ryde in wet conditions on Sunday. Balmain-Ryde fought back strongly but the North Sydney Bears were the winners on the day. The Bears secured the win without George Burgess, who was called up to first grade and Neenan Simpson, who was replaced by Jack Hawkins. Balmain-Ryde gave away a penalty in the Bears first set and Shaune Corrigan punished the Tigers with a try out wide after he was put through a hole by fullback James Roberts. Roberts converted and gave the Bears the ideal start in wet conditions. Jack Hawkins’ precise kicking game kept North Sydney deep inside the Tiger’s half, and it was Hawkins’ that set up the Bear’s second try of the afternoon. After being held up close to the line Hawkins put in a grubber kick, which rebounded off the posts, and Ryan Carr dived to score. Roberts again converted and the Bears were up 12-0 just 10 minutes into the match. Balmain Ryde continued to hand over possession with a poor ball security, and the Bears made the most of their possession in good field position with another try. Curtis Johnston scooped up a deflected Ryan Carr kick and went straight down the middle of the Tigers defence and forced his way over the line. Roberts extended the Bears lead to 18-0 halfway though the first half. Tigers winger Gus Agia made a break down his wing and got the away team inside the Bears 20 metres. Marc Russell ran the ball on the last tackle and gave a short ball to backrower Josh Davis who dived over the line untouched to score the Tigers first points of the afternoon. Dane Chisholm’s conversion attempt smacked into the post and the score stayed at 18-4 with under 10 minutes left in the first half. Quick hands and slick ball movement created a break inside the Tigers half to winger Linc Port , who drew the fullback and put in a kick which bounced perfectly to Dane Chisholm, who outsprinted James Roberts to get the Tigers back into the match. Chisholm converted from right in front to send the two sides into the break 18-10. Both teams gave away possession and penalties to start the second half in tough conditions at North Sydney Oval. However, it was Balmain-Ryde who continued to fight their way back into the match scoring the first try after the interval. Tom Humble threw a long, cutout ball to winger Gus Agai as the Norths defenders raced out of the line and Agai sprinted to the corner to put the ball down. Chisholm missed the sideline conversion and the Bears still led 18-14. The second half proved to be an arm wrestle with both sides creating chances but were unable to score points. Ball security continued to be an issue for the Tigers in the wet, but they stayed in the match by continually finding space with their long kicks. With the clock winding down and the game up for grabs, Ryan Carr looked to pass long but instead gave a short, flat ball to Chris McQueen 40 metres out and McQueen ran around the fullback and scored the try to seal the game for the North Sydney Bears. James Roberts was sin-binned in the dying minutes for pulling down a Tigers player without the ball after the Balmain-Ryde side tried to salvage the game. However, the North Sydney Bears finished the game 24-14 and continued their impressive run and stay atop the NSW Cup ladder, 3 Points clear of Second. Carr was placed on report for knees in the back of a player. But no further action was taken.

NSW Cup Round 15

v Auckland, North Sydney Oval

Sat Jun 9, 3:00pm

WIN 52-14

Late Changes, Hyland and Leslie dropped off the bench. A fantastic performance from the Bears on Saturday has kept them aloft at the top of the table defeating the Auckland Vulcans 52 to 14 at a packed and glorious North Sydney Oval.
