WIN 16-10

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gotten back in the winners’ circle by downing St George Illawarra 16-10 in Round 9 at ANZ Stadium. Aaron Gray, a late inclusion in Michael Maguire’s side scored a double in just his second first grade appearance, helping his side to a controlled victory over the high-flying Dragons in front of a healthy Monday Night Football crowd of 14,126. The game started poorly for the Rabbitohs when Greg Inglis sailed the kick-off over the dead-ball line on the full. Benji Marshall consequently kicked for touch from half-way gifting the Dragons first use of the ball inside the red and green 20. The Rabbitohs would ultimately survive the early onslaught though on the back of some positive defence. A head-high tackle on the returning John Sutton earned Souths a penalty on the 30 metre line, with Adam Reynolds opting to take a shot at goal successfully to make it 2-0 after just seven minutes. The advantage would be short-lived though, with a penalty at the other end of the pitch this time earning Saints a two-pointer through Gareth Widdop to square it up at two apiece. Saints would then open the try-scoring account for the night when Peter Mata’utia broke through the South Sydney short-side before passing on to a lurking Widdop in support – the Englishman racing the remaining 20 metres to touch down to make it 6-2 in favour of the visitors. With just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, a series of second-phase-plays out the red and green back-line saw the Dragons caught short out wide and Aaron Gray unmarked – the young-gun taking full advantage by racing over in the corner to claim his maiden first-grade try. Reynolds was unable to convert from the touch-line, leaving the score at six apiece. But with the first half less than two minutes from a conclusion, a Dragons short-side play saw Jason Nightingale pounce over the line to reclaim the lead for the Red V mere millimetres inside touch to send the teams to the sheds at 10-6. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs went wide in an attempt to stretch the Saints’ defence, and as a result Gray powered his way over for his second try of the night to lock things up at 10 apiece. Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion from touch to let the Rabbitohs lead 12-10. The Rabbitohs were about to take control of the match by sheer weight of possession – the home-side earning five repeat sets on the Dragons line before a quick shift saw Alex Johnston race over in the corner, courtesy of an amazing pass from Dylan Walker. Reynolds’ conversion attempt hit the upright, leaving the Rabbitohs in the lead at 16-10 with 20 minutes in the match. With the clock winding down, the Dragons threw everything they had at the men in red and green by turning the tables on them with their own string of repeat sets. But the Rabbitohs defence held strong, repelling wave after wave of promising red and white attack. The effort would prove enough – the Rabbitohs coming away with victory by 16-10.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 9

v St George-Illawarra, Redfern Oval, Sat May 9 2:00pm

WIN 26-24

Late Changes - Saumamao was out, Booth started second row, McCudden and T.Perrin on the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side has fought back from a horrid start to claim victory against the Dragons at Redfern Oval this afternoon by 26-24. Ill-discipline was the Rabbitohs’ own worst enemy in the opening exchanges with a string of penalties seeing the Dragons score three tries in quick succession. On the back of three straight penalties, the Dragons took full advantage by getting early use of the ball on the Rabbitohs’ line, with Jack Kavanagh crashing over from short range to make it 4-0 in favour of the visitors. The Saints backed it up mere minutes later on the back of yet more ill-discipline from the Rabbitohs – Patrick Herbert picking up a try to extend the Rec V’s lead. With just over ten minutes gone in the match, the Rabbitohs finally got use of the ball inside their own side of half way. But poor ball control was about to set up another Dragons try, this to fullback Matt Dufty, who overcame a number of Dragons defenders to score and make it 12-0. After a torrid period between the two teams that saw tempers flare on a number of occasions, the Rabbitohs finally hit back 13 minutes before the break when Irae Simone racing 20 metres to score out wide. Jordie Hedges’ conversion attempt hit the cross-bar, leaving the score at 12-4. A Rabbitohs fight-back was underway just one minute from half time, with a set-play in centre-field seeing Wallace Tangiiti race in under the posts to narrow the gap. Hedges kicked the first try of the afternoon to make the half-time score 12-10 in favour of the visitors. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs went straight back on the attack with Liam Coleman claiming first points of the second half and ultimately the lead for his side. Hedges added the extras from right in front to make it 16-12 in favour of the red and greens. Aaron Booth tightened the red and green grip on the match when he seized an opportunity to take a run from dummy-half at short range – the hooker coming up with a four pointer right under the sticks. Hedges made no mistake to make it 22-12. The Dragons weren’t dead and buried yet though, with Roland Kotobalavu and Dufty both racing through the middle of the Rabbitohs defence to score a try each to make it 22-20 – setting up a pressure conversion to equalise the clash. Herbert was equal to the task from out wide, grabbing the Dragons’ first conversion of the afternoon to lock the scores up at 22 apiece. Ill-discipline was about to come back and haunt the Rabbits though, with a penalty to the Dragons within kicking distance allowing Herbert to kick his side ahead to 24-22. The Rabbitohs dug deep though and replied minutes later through Damon Goolagong, who pounced on a kick into the in-goal out wide to reclaim the lead for the cardinal and myrtles.

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 9

v Newcastle, Newcastle Showground #2 Sun May 10 3:00pm

LOSS 22-26

Late Changes - Sione, Friend, Lee, Sorensen, Gregorius, Wall were out. Brown and Clark started prop, Suamamao at lock, J.Roberts, Maula, McKinnon and Smith on the bench.

Newcastle Knights made it back-to-back wins with a 26-22 victory over North Sydney Bears at No2 Sports Ground. Just two minutes into the match, Knights centre Nathan Ross cut through some easy defence to score the opening try. Strong winds made kicking difficult but with the wind going against, the Knights had more trouble. North Sydney found some rhythm in attack and were rewarded with a try from Cody Walker. Darren Nicholls added the extras and the Bears led 6-4. Moments later Walker scored his second of the day and the upset was on the cards. The Knights were ill-disciplined with the ball and scrappy at times. Norths were also guilty of mistakes and invited the Knights with good field position, which allowed Chanel Mata’utia to score after a nice right side movement. Danny Kerr added the extras and it was locked up at 10-all. Shortly after Chanel Mata’utia scored out wide again in picking up his second try double in two games. The Knights enjoyed a 14-10 lead heading into half time but that joy was short lived when they lost half back Danny Kerr to a foot injury. Kerr was carried from the field and took no further part in the game. However after the match Kerr was seen walking around indicating positive signs for the Knights. On field things got worse for the Knights when Cody Walker scored his third for the Bears early in the first half. Nicholls again added the extras and the Bears were back in front 16-14. Newcastle found themselves in attacking territory on several occasions but couldn’t find their way over the line until a piece of brilliance from Jake Mamo turned the game on its head. Mamo took it upon himself to chip, chase and regather to score next to the uprights. Chad Redman took over the kicking duties and converted the Mamo try. The Knights looked in control now and although only in front by four, they soon added another try after a strong run by back rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon. The Fitzgibbons try was converted by Redman and the score was now 26-16 in favour of the red and blue with 15 minutes remaining. Newcastle took their foot off the pedal and allowed the Bears back into the contest when John Olive scored out wide, which was converted by Nichols to make the scores 26-22 with two minutes left on the clock. North Sydney had one last chance to snatch a result but a lost ball ended their chance to win the game. Newcastle held on to win with a less-than-convincing performance over the bottom-placed Bears 26-22.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup - Grand Final

(1v2) v Cronulla-Sutherland, Leic, Sat May 9 1:00pm

LOSS 16-24

Late Changes - J.Anderson was out. R.Rahme played 5/8.

The South Sydney SG Ball under 18s side fell at the final hurdle, going down 24 points to 16 to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Leichhardt Oval in the NSWRL SG Ball Grand Final this afternoon (Saturday). The Sharks led 18-6 at the half time break and had to fight off a spirited South Sydney comeback in the second half to win their first SG Ball title in the Club’s history. The Sharks led 18-0 after tries to fullback William Kennedy, centre Curtis Scott, lock Billy Magoulias and centre Keenan Yorston. The Souths boys posted their first points when inspirational skipper Siosifa Talakai crossed one minute before the half time break. Talakai had been dishing out some heavy defence and busting through tackles deep in his own territory, and did the same when he got an opportunity near his opponent’s goal line, bumping off four defenders to score. He converted his own try, taking the score to 18-6 at the break. If Souths were in first or second gear in the first half, they came out in the second half in fourth gear, getting on the front foot straight away and putting the Sharks under plenty of pressure in the opening exchanges of the second half. That pressure would not lead to points, however, and it was Sharks winger Josh Tuilagi who would be first to score in the 54th minute of the game. Halfback Jack Williams converted to take the lead to 18 points. It was at this point that the young Souths team found its fifth gear, with lock Cameron Murray striking back for Willie Peters’ team in the 60th minute. He brushed off three defenders to score adjacent to the posts. Talakai added the extras to reduce the lead to 12 points. Five minutes later, and with only five minutes remaining on the clock, South Sydney winger Blade Perri made the most of the limited space he had on the left flank, weaving past four defenders to score in the left corner. The conversion attempt was wide, reducing the Sharks’ lead to eight with four minutes left on the clock. The young Rabbitohs threw everything they had at the Sharks and mounted two more promising raids into Cronulla territory, but the desperation play didn’t produce points and the Sharks would take the title. It was a fantastic effort for the South Sydney boys to make the Grand Final, having finished the season in seventh position on the ladder. Congratulations to Coach Willie Peters, captain Siosifa Talakai, and the rest of the under 18s squad on their efforts in 2015.
