WIN 36-4

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have put on an electric performance in Perth to down the New Zealand Warriors by 36-4 in front of a record crowd at nib Stadium for the third successive year. A double to Dylan Walker - in his 50th career game - as part of a six tries to one effort was enough to demolish the visitors as the Rabbitohs showed their ruthless streak right up until full-time. The Rabbitohs got on the board first when Bryson Goodwin attacked the New Zealand Warriors line before seemingly being tackled 10 metres out. But the referee called play on, allowing Goodwin to get up and continue on with the play and score. Issac Luke converted to give the Rabbits a six-point lead. The two teams were playing exciting football at both ends of the field, but points were hard to come by despite the high quality of enterprising plays. With the Rabbitohs pressing the Warriors line, a penalty 10 metres from the sticks was taken full advantage of when the side opted to take the two points. Issac Luke did the honours to make it 8-0 in favour of the men in red and green after 21 minutes. Alex Johnston saved a try when he leapt above Manu Vatuvei to diffuse a cross-field kick, but from the ensuing set, Vatuvei made no mistake when he steamed onto a pass before racing 20 metres to score. Shaun Johnson’s conversion attempt was waved away, proving that the Rabbitohs’ earlier decision to take the penalty goal was justified. Another penalty-goal to the Rabbitohs to make it 10-4 compounded the Warriors’ problems with Simon Mannering also leaving the field with a suspected concussion after being caught in an awkward position in a tackle. With the Rabbitohs again on the attack, an amazing inside-ball to Dylan Walker saw the centre streak away before slipping over on the 10 metre line. But the play was far from done. Chris Grevsmuhl attacked down the short-side and came up trumps on the very next tackle when he crashed over to score. Issac Luke made no mistake from out wide to make it 16-4. A mistake from the Kiwis on an attempted kick-diffusion on the last tackle opened the door for Souths to have a final throw of the dice before half-time and Tim Grant would be the ultimate beneficiary when he carried a handful of Warriors over the try-line with him to grab his first try in red and green. Issac Luke converted to make the half-time score 22-4. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs kept up the momentum, narrowly missing out on a four-pointer to Thomas Burgess. But mere minutes later Dylan Walker strolled through the Warriors defence to make it 28-4 with Luke’s conversion. Alex Johnston came within a whisker of scoring when Luke Keary put in a grubber kick for the unmarked Test winger who pounced on the ball. But the video referee disagreed and ruled against the try. But Johnston wouldn’t be denied a few sets later, when Walker made a mockery of the Warriors defence by standing, stopping and weaving just 15 metres out before giving it on to Johnston who tip-toed across the line to make it 32-4. Everyone seemed to be getting a piece of the action as the Rabbitohs continued to attack with gusto – front-rower Dave Tyrrell showing his versatility by forcing a line-drop-out with a grubber-kick into the in-goal. Greg Inglis then ignited the contest when an attempt by the Warriors to bat the ball back in-field saw Greg Inglis swoop before racing 70 metres and being caught by fellow Golden Boot recipient, Shaun Johnson. On the very next tackle and with the Warriors in disarray, Souths went wide and came up with points when Dylan Walker crossed for his second of the match to make it 36-4.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 13

v Warriors, 1:00pm, Redfern Oval

LOSS 24-34

Late Changes - H.Hiroti and Syme are out, Talakai starts centre, Timoteo at prop, Leulai on the bench.

The visiting New Zealand Warriors downed the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NYC by 34-24 at Redfern Oval today. The Rabbitohs started the game strong and managed to put together back-to-back sets on the Warriors try line before opening the scoring in the fourth minute through Siosifa Talakai who got a hand to a grubber kick, that was waited perfectly into the in-goal by Eli Levido. Jordie Hedges made no mistake with the conversion to give the home-side a perfect start with the score at 6-0. Despite a strong set after points, the Rabbitohs gave away a penalty from their clearance kick, which invited the Warriors into their own half. From that set, the Warriors looked as though they would score in the left corner after a brilliant cut-out pass found Tomas Aoake in space. Outstanding scramble-defence by the Rabbitohs’ right-edge bundled the left-winger into touch, which resulted in a 20-metre tap. Both teams had attacking chances but lacked the polish required to get over the line. The Warriors however grew in confidence from the offloads their forwards managed to put together in the middle of the field. This allowed them to play on the back of quick play-the-balls. The Rabbitohs proved they could spark flair of their own from long range, when a brilliant leap for the ball by Damon Goolagong resulted in a break against the run of the play. A necessary penalty was given away by the Warriors which gifted two points to Souths’ Jordie Hedges, extending the red and green lead to 8-0 after 25 minutes. However, the Warriors opened their account for the afternoon only three minutes later when fullback, Bradley Abbey, drifted across field to link up with Tomas Aoake. Aoake out-paced Devon Makoare-Boyce to score in the left corner with Ata Hingano brilliantly adding the extras from outwide. The Warriors went back-to-back through Marata Niukore, whose elusive footwork on the last tackle, bamboozled the Rabbitohs left-edge defence. Ata Hingano hit the upright from a much easier attempt at conversion, which left the score at 10-8. A costly mistake by the Rabbitohs in the set after the points, gifted an opportunity to the Warriors just before half-time and managed to convert their chance, through a close range try to Amoni Tufui. Hingano made the adjustments required from his last attempt, slotting the conversion to give the visitors an eight-point lead at half time. The second half began with plenty of action after a tussle between two players saw both a Rabbitohs and Warriors player being sent to the sin bin. The Rabbitohs however, gained advantage from this as they were awarded the penalty. Jordie Hedges scored in the 45th minute as a result – again courtesy of a well-weighted Eli Levido grubber. Hedges was unable to convert his try from the sideline, which left the score at 16-12 to the Warriors. The Rabbitohs built on their momentum when Treyvon Leuluai barged over from close range in the 51st minute – regaining the lead courtesy of a Jordie Hedges conversion, which brought the score to 18-16 to Souths. Souths widened the margin in the 60th minute when a set play between Liam Coleman and Wallace Tangiiti saw the latter score his first of the match. Hedges continued his form with the boot, which saw the lead grow to past a converted try. A mistake at the back from the Rabbitohs gave the Warriors a chance in good field position and the visitors managed to capitalise through Semisi Tyrell in the 68th minute. Tyrell looked to be contained by Josh Ellison but the upper-body strength of the left-centre proved too hard to contain. Hingano added another two points to their score which saw them trailing by only two points with the score at 24-22. Semisi Tyrell bagged himself a double in the 75th minute after a cross-field kick could not be fielded by Ellison. As a result, the ball bounced into the path of Tyrell and the lead was extended by Hingano which took the score to 28-24 with only four minutes remaining in the match. Aoake sealed the win for the visitors after a simple draw-and-pass by Brad Abbey gave the winger another unchallenged run to the line. Hingano finished the day with five out of six with the boot and took the Warriors lead to 10 points, leaving the final score at 34-24. The match saw momentum play a big role in the final result. Both sides had chances to seal the game but the late surge by the Warriors proved they had the patience and resilience required to take out the win.
