LOSS 22-30

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the West Tigers by 30-22 in Round 9 at ANZ Stadium, despite a spirited comeback from the men in Red and Green. The Rabbitohs endured a horror opening period that saw the Tigers score 20 points in as many minutes before going on to score another three tries. But the poor start would ultimately prove costly. A penalty to the Tigers on the very first tackle of the match saw the visitors come away with the early advantage, and after a number of sets on the Rabbitohs line, James Tedesco pounced on a grubber-kick in-goal and planted it down simultaneously with the Rabbitohs defender. The Bunker was consulted, who duly awarded the try. Jordan Rankin converted to make it 6-0 in favour of the Tigers. With Souths looking slow out of the blocks, the Tigers took full advantage by showing plenty of enthusiasm, eventually resulting in a three on two situation on the short-side that would result in a try to Rankin to make it 10-0. Things went from bad to worse for the Rabbitohs mere minutes later when Luke Brooks chipped over the top – the ball bouncing oddly in front of Greg Inglis before the Tigers halfback regathered to score, taking the score to 14-0 after 16 minutes of play. Right on the 20 minute mark the Tigers looked to extend their lead, and managed to do just that when Kevin Naiqama posted a try of his own after beating a number of Red and Green defenders to another grubber-kick in-goal, Rankin adding the extras to make it 20-0. Souths got their first real attacking opportunity around the 25 minute mark, and with the first stanza winding down the Rabbitohs received four consecutive penalties on the Tigers line. The visitors’ defence held strong though, denying the Rabbitohs on a number of occasions. The Rabbitohs finally got on the board with five minutes remaining in the match when Kirisome Auva’a scored out wide on the back of a towering bomb from Reynolds. After being checked by The Bunker, the try would open Souths’ account for the evening. Reynolds used the upright to guide his conversion attempt in to make the score 20-6 with three minutes left on the clock. To finish off the half, the Rabbitohs would put on a dazzling display of offloads at speed to travel some 90 metres in one set, but the teams would go to the break with the Tigers leading 20-6. On the resumption, Souths got on the board straight away in part thanks to another brilliant towering bomb from Reynolds, with David Nofoaluma cleaning it up but losing it on the ground only for Bryson Goodwin to pick up the crumbs to score. Reynolds added the extras to make it a ball-game at 20-12. Just nine minutes into the second half, the Rabbitohs fightback hit high gear when an attacking opportunity resulted in a quick shift to the left and a first Red and Green try to Dane Nielsen on the far flank. Reynolds kicked a booming touch-line conversion to incredibly make it a two point ball-game at 20-18. But the Tigers were unperturbed – Luke Brooks stabbing a kick into the in-goal for Rankin to come away with his second try of the evening right under the sticks before adding the extras to make it 26-18. The try re-energised the Tigers, and with 17 minutes in the match remaining, Nofoaluma streaked into the corner to make it 30-18. Inside the final seven minutes, Inglis sparked an opportunity that would eventually see the Rabbitohs draw and pass to set up a try for Bryson Goodwin. But it would be Wests’ night – the visitors bouncing back from their previous week’s loss to take the points by 30-22.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 9

v Wests-Tigers, 5:35pm

LOSS 0-46

Late Changes - Hamlin was out, Widders-Leece starts on the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs Under 20s have gone down to the Wests Tigers by 46-0 at ANZ Stadium. The Tigers burst out of the blocks from the kick-off by charging up over the 40 metre line on the very first tackle, and with a penalty to the visitors coming mere moments later, the stage was set for their first try – Luke Sharpe pouncing on a grubber in-goal to take an early lead. Thomas Bartley added the extras to make it 6-0. Wests continued to throw interesting shapes at the Rabbitohs inside the first 10 minutes of play, with back-rower Jakob Jiles benefitting from hunting out wide to score, taking the score out to 10-0. From the ensuing kick-off, the Tigers coughed up possession, gifting the ball to the men in Red and Green in good field position for the first time in the match. But while Souths asked plenty of questions of the Tigers defence, the visitors would ultimately survive the onslaught. As the half-way point of the first half approached, the Tigers went in again down the left-hand-side with five-eighth Veiru Mapesone – Roman Ioelu converting to take the score out to 16-0. Wests’ Esan Marsters was next to cross after the back-rower went from dummy-half close to the line and outmuscled the Rabbitohs defence to score the fourth try down the left flank. The unsuccessful conversion attempt left the score at 20-0 leading into the break. It took just eight minutes for the Tigers to assert their authority in the second half, with hooker Jacob Liddle weaving through a staggered Rabbitohs defensive line to streak some 25 metres to score. Ioelu converted to take the score to 26-0. The Tigers’ avalanche of points continued when with two quick tries. Marsters powered over for his second of the night, leaving Rabbitohs defenders clutching at thin air in his wake. Ioelu converted to take the score to 32-0 before Sharpe also grabbed his second millimetres inside the touch-line to take the score to 36-0. Wests skipper Junior Tatola added his name to the score-sheet mere moments later to notch up the 40-point mark, before Mapesone added the extras to make it 42-0. Mapesone would then grab his second not long afterwards to make it 46-0 with ten minutes on the clock remaining.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 8

v Wests-Tigers, Community Oval Moss Vale, Sat Apr 30 3:00pm

LOSS 18-36

Late Changes - Siolo, Mauala are out, Clark starts prop, Williams and Seijka on the bench.

The Wests Tigers have beaten the North Sydney Bears 36-18 at Community Oval in Moss Vale. As part of the NSWRL's "Country Round" the two sides met at the picturesque Southern Highlands venue with the Tigers proving far too good for the Bears. The Tigers kicked off in cool conditions and after defending the opening set from North Sydney they earned a penalty and marched downfield. The Bears defended their line bravely and a Tigers error on the last got them of the hook. Good pressure by the Tigers forced back to back drop outs early in the contest, and Tigers hooker Menaia Cherrington scored the game's first try in the 15th minute. Josh Drinkwater made no mistake from in front and his side led 6-0. Great last ditch defence by the Tigers denied Michael Oldfield a short time later and the Tigers made their way downfield. The Bears were dealt a blow when an error just 10 metres out from their line gave the Tigers a great attacking opportunity but strong Bears defence forced a Tigers mistake. More resilient Bears defence forced a mistake out of Tigers prop Rod Griffin with just the one try to show for an enthralling 25 minutes of action. On 29 minutes Bears fullback Sitiveni Moceidreke put Oldfield away down the short side and he proved too quick for the chasers to score the Bears' opening try. The try was converted by Eli Levido to tie it up 6-all. A try to Piki Rogers just minutes later gave the Bears the lead for the first time. Levido converted to make it 12-6. In the 37th minute the Tigers hit back through Ored Karwhin in the left corner after they kept the ball alive and found the Bears' defence wanting. Drinkwater's conversion hit the upright and was waved away so the Bears held onto a 12-10 lead in the shadows of halftime. Another Tigers mistake put them under intense pressure with just a couple of minutes remaining in the half but a poor kick let the Tigers released the pressure. The Tigers made the perfect start after halftime when Karwhin touched down again to give the Tigers a 14-12 lead but Drinkwater couldn't add the extras from out wide. Back to back tries to the Tigers pulled the Tigers further in front this time interchange Jackson Williams scored the try. Drinkwater converted to make it 20-12 with just over half an hour left. Too many errors were making it difficult for the Bears to get back into the match and on the back of another, just 10 metres out from the Bears' own line, the Tigers went on the attack and scored their fifth try through centre Chance Peni. Drinkwater converted to make it 26-12. The Bears followed this up by kicking out on the full as their miserable afternoon continued. With just over 10 minutes remaining Tigers fullback Justin Hunt was forced from the field due to concussion but it didn't stop their dominance of the match. With only 7 minutes remaining the Tigers scored try number six through secondrower Tyler Cassel. Jack Littlejohn took over the goal kicking duties but couldn't add the extras and his side led 30-12. Cassel scored his second try in two minutes later when he leapt highest to bring down a Littlejohn cross-field kick and push the Tigers even further in front. Cassel made no mistake with the conversion and the Tigers led 36-12 with six minutes left. Despite leading comfortably, the Tigers repelled late a Bears raid with some outstanding defence. A consolation try to Oldfield on the siren gave the Bears fans a happy end to the game and Levido converted from out wide.

Jason Clark was charges with a grade 1 dangerous throw charge, which has a base charge of 125 points. He has since taken the early guilty plea and is free to play his next game with 93 carry over points.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Minor Preliminary Final

(4v2) v Illawarra, Campbelltown Stadium, Sat Apr 30 11:30am

LOSS 28-30

South Sydney’s SG Ball (under 18s) side have bowed out of their 2016 campaign after going down to the Illawarra Steelers by 30-28 in the Preliminary Final at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday. Just one game away from the Grand Final, the Matt King-coached side endured a tough opening to the match that saw them down 18-0 after just 15 minutes of play. By half-time, the men in Red and Green had clawed back to 22-12 thanks to some much-needed renewed energy, and even led the game 24-22 during much of the second half. But the fast-finishing Steelers would ultimately take the points on the day as well as the coveted Grand Final berth – running out 30-28 victors. Campbell Graham grabbed a try-scoring double, while Dean Hawkins, Blake Manowski, and Mawene Hiroti also contributed four-pointers – Hiroti also kicking four goals. For coach King, while the result was disappointing, the vital experience earned by his players was a point of focus. “I’m really proud of the effort this season,” said King. “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t come away with the result we wanted, but the experience that the boys will have taken out of that is something that will shape them moving forward. “At this stage of their development, it’s a huge learning curve and things can only be negative if you don’t learn. These boys will have gotten plenty out of this season. “This is the last time many of these boys will play together because they graduate to the next stage, while some will be here next year, so it’ll certainly be exciting to follow how everyone develops from here on.”
