LOSS 10-30

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down by 30-10 to the Brisbane Broncos in Round 19 of the Telstra Premiership this evening (Saturday) at ANZ Stadium. Missing Origin representatives, Adam Reynolds and Greg Inglis through injury and suspension respectively, the South Sydney Rabbitohs came up short against a strong Brisbane outfit despite displaying promising signs throughout the match. The Broncos would be the first to strike through Lachlan Maranta, with the winger capitalising on an overlap to streak away and score the opening points of the match. Jordan Kahu impressed with his first conversion attempt of the night, notching the kick over from the sideline to set up a 6-0 score line. It would not take long for the Rabbitohs to retaliate, as Luke Keary took on the Brisbane defence close to the try-line before wrestling his way over. The extras were added by Cody Walker, leaving the scores a six apiece. Despite the promising start, the deadlock would be short-lived as Brisbane reclaimed the lead through Ben Hunt, with the Broncos playmaker spotting an opening in the Rabbitohs defence before darting through the gap for a four-pointer. Kahu added the two points, leaving the score at 12-6 in the visitors favour. An error from the Rabbitohs deep within their own half allowed the Broncos to extend their lead, as Corey Oates displayed spectacular athleticism to score in the corner, manipulating his body to ground the ball whilst remaining in the field of play. Once again, Kahu was sharp from the sideline, providing Brisbane with an 18-6 advantage. Despite both sides having a number of attacking opportunities toward the back end of the first stanza, the score line would remain 18-6 in favour of the Broncos as the half-time siren sounded. The fruitless period of play continued after the break, with errors and desperate defence ensuring that either side would not better their position in the match despite having significant opportunity to do so. The try-scoring drought would eventually be ended in the 55th minute by Broncos speedster James Roberts, who displayed blistering speed to break the line and beat fullback. Antony Milford – who took the kicking duties from the injured Jordan Kahu – had no issues adding the extras from right in front, giving Brisbane an 18 point buffer. Brisbane’s lead would soon be enhanced, as Corey Oates intercepted a pass on his own try-line before running 90 metres to score under the posts for his second try of the night. Milford was once again gifted with the simplest of conversions, setting up a 30-6 score line. Rabbitohs fullback, Cody Walker, would provide his side with a glimmer of hope breaking through the Broncos defence to continue his strong try-scoring efforts in 2016. The custodian was unable to convert his own try, as the score remained 30-10. These would prove to be the final points of the match, as the Broncos claimed the two premiership points with a solid 20 point victory over the Red and Greens

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 19

v Brisbane, 5:15pm

LOSS 20-52

Late Changes - Hamlin was out. McCudden started lock.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have suffered a tough 52-20 defeat at the hands of the Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium. Despite having the first use of the football in attacking field position, the Rabbitohs would concede the opening points of the match, as Josh Rudolph pounced on a grubber kick to provide the away side with first blood. Jamayne Isaako had no issues adding the extras, leaving the score at 6-0. It would not take long for the Rabbitohs to bounce back as winger, Josh Ellison, capitalised on a slick backline play to cross out wide. No error was made with the sideline conversion, as Chad O’Donnell added the extra two points, levelling the scores a 6-6. Similarly to the opening try, the Broncos would cross again after securing a repreat set from a goal-line drop out, as Gerome Burns bust through the defensive line to regain the lead for his side. Once again, Isaako was successful with the conversion, setting up a 12-6 score to the visitors. Souths would continue to go blow for blow with their opponents as Josh Ellison bagged his second try of the first-half, receiving a brilliant long ball before diving over in the corner. Unlike his first attempt from the sideline, O’Donnell was unable to add the extras, meaning the score would remain 12-10 in favour of the Broncos. The Broncos would extend their lead courtesy of a bust down the flank from winger, Sam Smith, with the outside back beating two defenders to score. Isaako would continue his strong night with the boot, once providing his side with the additional points. With the half-time siren looming, the away side would cross once more, with Gehamat Shibasaki scoring under the posts. Isaako’s conversion would set-up a 24-10 score line heading into the sheds. The Rabbitohs would strike first in the second stanza, as Maia Sands showed great strength close to the line to muscle his way over and keep his side in the contest. Chad O’Donnell had no issues converting the try, reducing the Broncos lead to 8 points at 24-16. Halfback, Gerome Burns would deliver the counter-attack for the Broncos, kicking a wayward pass forward before pouncing on the loose ball to score his second of the evening. Isaako maintained his perfect record, adding the extras and leaving the score at 30-16. The Broncos would continue their dominance in attack, with Michael Molo wrestling his way over to claim a four-pointer. Brisbane’s lead continued to grow, with the conversion from Isaako providing a 36-16 advantage to the visitors. Maia Sands would provide the Rabbitohs with some joy, as the hooker scored his second try of the second-half, burrowing over from dummy-half. O’Donnell was unable to add the extras, leaving the deficit at 16 points. It would not be long before the Broncos struck back, as Jamayne Isaako barged his way over before converting his own try to set up a 42-20 score line. The Broncos would cross twice more before the final siren, with David Fauid and Sam Smith topping off the result and securing a 52-20 full-time score line.

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 18

v Newtown, North Sydney Oval, Sun Jul 17 3:00pm

LOSS 14-32

Late Changes - Houghton is out.

The Newtown Jets overcame a disastrous start to easily beat the North Sydney Bears 32-14 in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW match at North Sydney Oval this afternoon. From being down 14-nil after half an hour, the Jets piled on 32 unanswered points to put the Bears away, obtaining an iron grip on the Frank Hyde Shield and snapping a three-game losing streak in the process. The first 20 minutes were dominated by the Bears, who came out of the blocks firing against a hesitant Jets side in the early exchanges. Norths turned their early pressure to points when backrower Piki Rogers powered over from an Eli Levido short ball in just the fifth minute to open the scoring with Levido’s conversion. The Bears doubled their lead when from the scrum win after Jets skipper Mitch Brown dropped a high Liam Coleman bomb, a Levido cross kick was tapped back by winger Abbas Miski for centre Latrell Robinson to go over untouched. Levido converted for the rampaging Bears to lead 12-nil. The lead was extended when winger Matt Evans got his first try from good work down the left by Jordan Drew with Newtown’s first real foray into Bears territory five minutes from the interval. Luke Capewell converted and Newtown had some hope, being only 14-6 down at the break. Newtown then really came to life Evans got his second try three minutes into the second half to bring the Jets back to 14-12 down with Capewell’s conversion. The match was in the balance, with Capewell losing the ball in-goal thanks to a desperate Sitiveni Mocieireke tackle. The turning point came in the 54th minute. A long Bears break through Rogers and Robinson down the left was intercepted by centre Lachlan Stein who quickly turned defence into devastating counter attack. Stein fed Drew, who in turn sent sent Jets skipper Brown away on a 55 metre run to score at the other end of the field. Capewell converted and incredibly Newtown had hit the front at 18-14. The 12-point turnaround knocked the mental stuffing out of the Bears. With Josh Cleeland playing a starring role with both ball in hand and with a sound kicking game on his return from injury, Newtown took full advantage in playing superb field position for the rest of the match. Poor discipline by the Bears saw Capewell give the Jets the upper hand with penalty goals in the 59th and 65th minutes to extend the lead to eight points. Then big Saulala Houma barged over from close range after concerted attack from a Moceidreke spilt bomb to seal the two competition points with five minutes left. A bone-crunching Kurt Kara tackle in the last minute from a Bears scrum win saw Coleman spill possession for Jacob Gagan to pick up the loose ball and score for an exclamation mark on the the win. Capewell converted to put the icing on the Newtown cake.

Patrice Siolo was charged by the MRC for a Grade 1 Careless High Tackle in the 68th minute. He has since taken the early guilty plea and will have 56 carryover points.
