LOSS 6-20

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the North Queensland Cowboys 20 points to six in their round five clash tonight (Friday) at 1300SMILES Stadium in Townsville. A late change by Head Coach Michael Maguire saw Damien Cook start in the hooker position while Sam Burgess moved to prop and Angus Crichton came off the bench to start in lock. The Cowboys came out strong in their opening minutes, gaining a 40/20 in the first minute of play. The Rabbitohs held their composure and completed two sets in the following minutes yet it would be the Cowboys who would come out on top. The Cowboys made their first mistake in the 16th minute when Coen Hess knocked on 20 metres out from their try line however the Rabbitohs were unable to make the most of their opportunities, coming up empty handed. The Rabbitohs were then the next to falter with a dangerous tackle by Damien Cook. The Cowboys made the call to take a shot at gaining the first points for the night when they accepted a two point penalty kick right in front of the uprights after a second dangerous tackle was made by the South Sydney side. The successful goal by Johnathan Thurston gave the Cowboys a two point lead 21 minutes in. Adam Reynolds followed the oppositions try with a floater starting kick that landed awkwardly in the Cowboys attack resulting in a knock on in goal by Jake Granville. The Rabbitohs took full advantage of the opportunity and although John Sutton thought he had planted the ball over the try line, the attempt was called as a no try after the video referee found the ball was stripped from under him. The Cowboys added another four points to their lead after a line break from their five-eighth, Michael Morgan resulted in the first try for the night. Thurston extended their lead eight points zero. The Cowboys gave their home crowd something to cheer about when a quick back line play saw winger Gideon Gela-Mosby with a clear line on the left side of the field resulting in a second try for the home team. The extras would be added by Thurston, leaving the score 14 points to zero marking half time. The second half saw Anthony Cherrington make his Rabbitohs debut but the Cowboys continued to put pressure on Souths line. The Rabbitohs stepped up and returned the pressure forcing a penalty on the Cowboys as they attempted to play the ball. In contrast, a quick play the ball from Sam Burgess saw Cook pass the ball off to Walker who slotted a flat ball into Robert Jennings path and sent the centre over for his first Rabbitohs try. Reynolds conversion closed the gap leaving the Rabbitohs trailing six points to 14. But the Cowboys wouldn’t let the Rabbitohs celebrate for long and added another converted try to the scoreboard. A big play by Siosifa Talakai saw the centre intercept a Cowboys pass and sprint the majority of the field but an unlucky knock on by Jennings saw the ball back in the possession of the home side. The Rabbitohs struggled to keep up with the pace of the game and a handful of errors allowed the Cowboys to gain an advantage. But the Rabbitohs didn’t give up and continued to forcefully attack the Cowboys defence but it wouldn’t be enough and the Cowboys would finish off the match and take the two point win.

The story all week was if the match would go ahead due to cyclone Debbie hitting the region.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 5

v North Queensland, 5:55pm

LOSS 18-42

Late Changes - Hippi was trimmed 24 hours before the match. Hiroti, Sheppard and Shiach-Wise are out. Morgan starts in the centre, Topai-Aveai at prop, T.Butler second row, Saunders and Kolomatangi on the bench

A second-half blitz from the Cowboys U20s team has secured victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs after being level for the first 40 minutes. Centre Bacho Salam and strike forward Emry Pere both scored a try in each half in the seven-tries-to-three win as sharp-shooting halfback Jake Clifford posted seven from seven conversions. The home side got off to a flyer, racing to an 18-0 lead in as many minutes as Salam, Pere and winger Michael Carroll all crossed early. But the game reached a dramatic turning point midway through the opening stanza as in-form hooker Calum Gahan copped a sickening knock in a tackle, the young No.9 lying prone for several minutes before being helped from the field. He would take no further part in the game, and the stoppage seemed to give the young Rabbitohs a chance to re-establish themselves in the game. Souths ran in a three-pronged riposte to their opponents, with tries to back-rower Sam Johnstone, bench forward Cruz Topai-Aveai and big prop Josh Saunders levelling scores on the stroke of half time. The second half would swing back in the favour of the home team as classy fullback Kalyn Ponga – returning to NYC duty after a fortnight in the top grade – crossed, ably assisted by Gahan’s backup Duarne Dempsey. With Clifford accurate with his kicking, four was always being turned into six and when Salam and Pere crossed for their second tries – and captain Mitch Dunn adding one of his own – the young Cowboys raced away with the match. It was a tough match for the young Rabbitohs who came into the contest high on confidence after their big win against the Roosters in round four

Reserve Grade - Intrust Super NSW Premiership Round 5

v Wests-Tigers, Chatswood Oval, Sun Apr 2 3:00pm

LOSS 16-18

Late Changes - Williams and J.Hunt are out. Rochow starts prop, Rudolf and Mauala on the bench. A Joel Edwards try with seven minutes left has propelled the Wests Tigers to an upset 18-16 win over the North Sydney Bears in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW match played at Chatswood Oval this afternoon. Coming from 16-6 down with 15 minutes to play, the Tigers showed great determination to score their first win for the Intrust Super Premiership NSW win – and send the Bears crashing to their first season loss. In a tight and tough opening period, the Tigers showed that they meant business when hooker Jacob Liddle burst clear from dummy half in the 17th minute from half way to send five-eighth Justin Hunt away for his first try under the posts. Jordan Rankin converted for a 6-0 Tigers lead. The Bears then worked their way into field position for former Melbourne Storm and Newcastle Knights prop Robbie Rochow to step into the clear 13 minutes later, before being brought down close to the Tigers' line. Bears halfback Eli Levido then darted past the backpedalling Tigers defence to score on the next tackle. Levido converted his own try to level scores up at 6-6. The scores remained level at half-time despite both sides having half chances late in the first half. As both sides probed for the opening as the arm wrestle continued through the middle to start the second half, the Bears took full advantage from two Tigers errors – both from kicks – to take the lead. First, Tigers winger Luke Garner dropped a high Luke Kelly midfield bomb 14 minutes into the second half to give the Bears a scrum feed and field position from close range. Bears winger Abbas Miski finished a neat left sided short side move at the end of the set from the scrum to score in the corner and give the Bears the lead at 10-6. Nine minutes later, Tigers fullback Watson Heleta made a terrible mess of misjudging another Kelly midfield bomb. Heleta allowed the ball to bounce instead of taking the spiralling kick on the full; Levido pounced on the bouncing ball coming through on the chase and toed the ball ahead to the in-goal area to score his second try under the posts. Levido converted his own try and the Bears almost looked home with a 16-6 lead. The Tigers, however, were not to be denied. Forcing a Bears mistake with 12 minutes left, the Tigers got sufficient field position for halfback Rankin to send a cross field kick on the last tackle of the next set for Hunt to make a spectacular leap and mid-air catch on the full to dive over for his second try. Ranking converted to set up the grandstand finish at 16-12 as the match entered the last 10 minutes. With seven minutes left, a left sided move late in the tackle count saw Hunt break clear and time his pass beautifully for Edwards to crash over and score. Rankin nailed the conversion and the Tigers were back in front. The Tigers defence then just held on in a frenetic closing five minutes in the face of waves of late North attack inside the Tigers 20 metre area to clinch their first win of the season.

NSWRL U18 SG Ball Cup Round 8

v Western Suburbs, Kirkham Park, Sat Apr 1 11:45am

LOSS 30-42

Late Changes - Folau, Reilly, Ngere, Chan-Foon, Fitzgerald were out. Sionetali and Tass start on the wing, Hyslop five-eighth, Sulka-Fifita prop, Stephenson, Lose second row, Rodwell at lock and Perry added to the bench. Western Suburbs took a massive step towards the top four while ending Souths’ season with a 42-32 victory. Western Suburbs opened proceedings on eight minutes as Dee Ioapo slipped through the line and offloaded for Blake Clayton, Rua Ngati doubling the lead five minutes later with a trademark dummy half effort which saw him burrow through the bunnies. Souths returned serve in the 20th minute courtesy of Joseph Lose swerving his way through as Wests’ central defence went to sleep, the Rabbits grabbing their second try in the 26th minute as Trevor SIonetali finished off a right-side wrap around which had serious obstruction question marks around it. If Souths believed they had the opportunity to relax having pulled Wests back in, Ryan Delponte showed their faith was misplaced as a neat swerve and step saw the Magpies push their lead back to eight points at the interval. Souths needed to find first points in the second half but were caught flat footed by Ryan Delponte, whose second scything, swerving run of the day within twenty metres of the line saw him grab his second try. Souths did find the second try of the second stanza, however, with Isaiah Tass cutting back inside after Wests were caught badly short on their right side before Nicholas Mougios brought the cardinal and myrtle back to within four points with an impressive last tackle effort in the 48th minute. Just as Souths made it a cliffhanger of a game Wests pulled away again. Rua Ngati’s grubber kick reboeding off the upright for the Magpies’ rake to grab his sixth of the season but Souths weren’t going away, Jonathan Mitsias slicing through the Wests line in the 68th minute to set up a grandstand finish. Souths believed they had forced an error with eight minutes remaining, but it was instead ruled a one on one strip and Blake Clayton took the opportunity to race 80 metres to put on his second before Matthew Morgan sealed the result five minutes from time. Souths would have the final say though as Nicholas Mougios touched down out wide for his second but it wasn’t enough to deny Wests an invaluable two points.

NSWRL U16 Matthews Cup Round 8

v Western Suburbs, 10:15am

WIN 36-18

Late Changes - Vesikula, Tsoukalas, Harsanyi were out, Prelec started on the wing, Doddsin the centre, Patalo-Vitale prop, Manmanuitoga lock, Tautaiolefua and Spiteri on the bench. Souths survived a second half scare to record a 36-18 win over a plucky Wests outfit in their best performance of the season. Seven minutes of more drops than a medicine factory elapsed before Souths opened the scoring, Zach Kambos going over off a right side spread, Peter Mamouzelos forcing his way over from dummy half in the 14th minute to put the visitors ahead by double digits. Wests treturned serve with a dummy half try of their own seven minutes before the interval as Josh Taylor-Myles forced his way over from five metres away, Peter Mamouzelos making it three tries in a row from acting half in the shadows of halftime to send the bunnies to the sheds ahead by 16-4. Souths denied Wests the opportunity to make a game of it after four minutes as Christian Patolo-Vitale forced his way through from close to the line, Tevita Taumoepenu extending the visitors’ lead with a simple charge forward as Wests’ defence fell apart scrambling on their line. Wests scrapped around and made a game of it with 15 minutes to go as Keegan Danielson put Dylan Oitmann away with a neat dummy through the line, Sam Fomai giving Wests a real chance with ten minutes remaining as he forced his way over on the right side as Souths fell off in defence. Fomai was at it again four minutes later, going over on an almost identical blade of grass but the vital kick went wide, Zach Kambos making the final margin 12 with less than a minute remaining.
