2025 - The Cyber View from the Hill

Another Loss in Melbourne

Our third loss in a row and another loss in Melbourne, our 20th to day in a row. A record crowd saw us play on ANZAC day in slippery conditions in Melbourne. It was a classic Storm game oce again, with the opposition getting points always just when theyneeded them. One thing that has become apparent is Bennett struggles against Bellamy teams. With Bellemay targeting weak points in the opposition, while Bennett relies on the team to perform to their best of the applities. You could see this in how they targeted our usual reserve grade players with success. Our go forward continues to struggle in 2025, while we continue to give a significant 6-again calls while we struggle against momentum. It was a improvment on last years debacle, but we still have a long way to go to improve. Another road trip this, this week off to Brisbane against Newcastle in Magic round.

Wighton double

Jack Wighton had one of his better game this week as he scored two tries against the stop with his strong straight running. Another pleasing aspect of his game was his leadership when captain Latrell Mitchell was sent to the sin bin. He has been reward by being given the captain role this week. Hope his energy can ru off on the rest of the team.

Welcome Gudgeon and Johannssen

In reserve grade two new names have popped up. Ammaron Gudgeon a fullback who spent time in the Storm system before a short stint at the Dragons this year. And Tim Johannssen a tall lanky prop from the Wests-Tigers. Both are looking for opportunities as we try and turna round our reserve grade fortunes and provide some vital depth.

Wright double

Daniel Wright continues to play well on our left edge. Scoring tries through his speed. On the weekend he scored a double giving the team a lead late in the game. But it wasn't enough as the loss of 3 forwards impacted the final outcome. He continue to develop and oves ack to his normal centre position this week.

U19s Bow Out

Injuries finally caught up with the U19 SG Ball squad as the loss of Keung, Logan before the match and Matthews and Kuscu during the match saw the team bow out one game before the grade final. Overall it was great improvement in the team from 10th last year to a Top 4 finish. Top try scorer for the year was Taj Alvarez with 13 tries and top point scorer was Matthew Humphries with 76 points. Well done to everyone in our best result in 10 years.

U17s Bow Out

Like our U19s our U17s team benefited from the new focus on fitness and defence in 2025. They also bowed out to last years premiers the Warriors, who's power game suited the wet conditions. Overall it was also a big improvement on last year from 11th to a Top 4 finish. Top try scorer was Darcy Feltham and Taj Aufai-Farai with 5 tries each. While top point scorer was Payton Tarau with 50 points. Again well done to everyone in best result in 7 years.

Crazy Sin Bin Crackdown

What a crazy weekend of refereeing as the NRL had a crackdown on head contact sin bin's There were 18 sin bins across all games, the most ever ona sengle round of football. While no one has a issue with the rule, it is obvious that we need to bring some common sense in the process. For example the many games were played in wet slippery conditions. This effects the runner as slips trying to step a defender and falls. The second is the tackler cannot change momentum once committed and pull out tackle or change his tackle. As such we saw a third of the incidents dismissed by the Match Review Committee as the video referee had not taken into account the match conditions. Its time that a MRC representative and referee work closer during the game and post game MRC review. They need to be on the same page. Events like this decide game results, and that in turn effects the Top 8 and eventually the premiership.

Round 8 - Stat Attack

Statistically it was a poor of a game. Completions improved to 83% from 72% last week. Errors improved to 11 from 14 last week. We gave away 4 penalties and 5 6-again calls from 14 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle improved to a poor level of 39.9m from 55.6m last week. Our missed tackles dropped to a horrid level of 48 from 38 last week. Opposition offloads improved to 8 from 19 again last week.

Looking at our left side defence - BentleyHape/JGray-Wighton-JGray/Dodd-Koloamatangi (3-3-4-1) dropped to 11 from 6 missed tackles last week. On the right side Graham-Tass-Sullivan-Aitken (2-2-7-4) dropped to 15 from 10 missed tackles last week. Ruck defence Keppie/Havili-Mamouzelos/Havili-Tatola/Moale-Arrow/Duncan (4-5-3-9) dropped to 21 from 18 missed tackles last week.

Our go forward improved to 1382m from 1273m last week. With our props go forward dropped to a very poor level of 334m compared to 355m last week. Havili made 10+m per run. Koloamatangi, Wighton, Graham and L.Mitchell made 100+m in the match. Defensively Aitken was our best in the tackling raking up 50 tackles. No one didn't miss a tackle.
