Abel was a North Sydney junior who also played some Rugby Union. After his time with North Sydney, he would spend a number of season in the New England region before coming to South Sydney late in his career. He played briefly with Mascot in 1940. He made his South Sydney club and first grade premiership debut in the 1941 Round 1 clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Sports Ground.
Abel is a well built player, who is quick off the mark and has a habit of making a number of breaks during a game.
Abel only played 1 season with South Sydney in 1941. He played 8 first grade club games for South Sydney which included 7 first grade premiership games. Overall he played 14 senior grade club games for South Sydney which included 13 senior grade premiership games for South Sydney.
Abel played his final first grade premiersip game in the 1941 Round 7 clash against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval, before playing his final first grade club game for South Sydney in the 1941 tour match against Bathurst in Bathurst. He would play out the rest of the season in the lower grades. He played his final senior grade club and premiership match in the 1941 Third Grade Minor Semi-Final clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He enlisted into the RAAF in early 1942.
