Dennehy was graded in 1940 after playing in the City Houses competition. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1940 Round 4 Third Grade clash against St George at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Towards the end of the season he stepped up to Reserve Grade in the 1940 Round 12 clash against Newtown at the Sports Ground. He was called up to make his first grade club debut midway through the 1941 season in the 1941 Tour match against Bathurst in Bathurst. A month later he made his first grade premiership debut in the 1941 Round 12 match against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
Dennehy was a intellegent player who at times played as a extra back behind a 5 man pack. He was rated by Cec Blinkhorn as the greatest loose forward Souths Sydney have had since Alby Carr. In 1941 he joined the Citizen Military Forces before transfering into the Army in 1943.
