Lane is a 1 time South Sydney Reserve Grade premiership winner in 1945. He was also a member of the 1943 short form carnaval squad who made the final.
Lane was one of a number of rugby union converts in 1941. He had a success career in rugby union breakaway forward with Eastern Suburbs, playing for New South Wales and being unlucky to miss out on the 1939 Wallaby team that toured England. In 1941 it was graded by South Sydney. But missed the opening weeks of the 1941 season from injuries incured in a motor accident. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1941 Round 3 clash against St George at the Sports Ground. The following week he stepped up and made his club and first premiership debut in the 1941 Round 4 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
Lane is a well equipped forward, who tackles very well.
Lane played 7 seasons with South Sydney between 1941 and 1947. He played 61 first grade club games for South Sydney which included 55 first grade premiership games and 4 first grade cup games. Overall he played 81 senior grade club games for South sydney, which included 74 senior grade premiership games. He also played in 2 short form games for South Sydney.
Lane played his one and only representative game while at South Sydney for the 1941 Sydney City II team against the Army II team at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
In 1947 Lane's residential qualification was challenged when he was listed to play with Eastern Suburbs. He would play his final first grade club and premiership game for South Sydney in the 1947 Round 1 clash against St George at Erskineville Oval. He played his final senior grade club and premiership for South Sydney in the 1947 Round 8 Reserve Grade clash against Eastern Suburbs at Sports Ground.
