McCarthy gets the ball away
WIN 37-6
Late Changes - Lowther, Edwards and Withers are out. McCartney and O'Donnell start at centre, Birrell on the wing and Purcell and five-eighth..
South Sydney won clearly in the opening Amco Cup rugby league competition at Redfern Oval yesterday. Souths were a class above Ipswich, beating them 37-6. Souths had little more than a low-key taining run against Ipswich whose previous form was a 0-55 loss to Toowoomba. Souths scored 11 tries. South Sydney ran into serious goal-kicking problems yesterday. Yesterday Simms missed with four shots at goal before handing over to five-eighth Greg Purcell who landed 2 goals from 4 attempts, before handing over to Ross Birrell missed missing with three attempts. The poor kicking took the gloss off a cakewalk win for Souths. Ipswich hooker Bruce Chrichton's ability in the scrums kept the score from reaching massive proportions. Chrichton won the scrums 12-15 including seven straight, after Souths had raced to a 19-1 lead. Purcell won a colour televison as best player of the match, scoring two fine tries and setup another in a dazzling exhibition.
