WIN 32-20

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have defeated the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 32 points to 30 in an amazing game at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford tonight (Friday). A strong crowd of 18,108 saw Rabbitohs centre Dylan Farrell score the second hat trick of his career, with noted try scorer Nathan Merritt racking up a double himself. Last week the talk of the town was the Rabbitohs’ left-side attack, but tonight it was the right-hand-side that put their hand up to show the Rabbitohs can attack both sides of the field. Farrell was the first to post points when he scored in the eighth minute of play. It was crafty halfback Chris Sandow who started the play, chipping and chasing just inside the opposition’s half. The ball made its way into the hands of rookie Kane Morgan who found Farrell inside to score. Sandow converted to take the lead to six-nil. The Sea Eagles struck back quickly when winger Jamie Buhrer scored the first of two tries six minutes later. What appeared to be a double knock-on was awarded a benefit of the doubt try by the video referee, and Daly Cherry-Evans’ conversion locked the scores up at six-a-piece. Three minutes later left winger Fetuli Talanoa crossed for the Rabbitohs after giant second-rower put in a deft grubber kick to the left-hand-corner of the in goal area for Talanoa to pounce just centimetres in from the touch-in-goal and dead-ball lines. Sandow missed the conversion but minutes later he slotted a penalty goal from in front of the sticks to restore the six point lead. Buhrer scored his second in the 29th minute after running a nice angle through the Rabbitohs’ defensive line. Ten minutes passed before the Rabbitohs posted the next points, those coming from Dylan Farrell’s second try. It was set up by a powerful running display from captain Roy Asotasi who drew the play towards the uprights, the ball was then given some air to the right wing, before Morgan put Farrell away on the inside to score. The Rabbitohs led 16-10 after the first 40 minutes and were playing well but it was the next 25 minutes that would earn them the two competition points. The Rabbitohs came out looking determined to stop anything that moved. Captain Asotasi pulled off a number of big hits, replacement forward Chris McQueen was also on target with his shoulder and the Rabbitohs maintained a strong defensive line as a unit. Despite that the visitors were the first to score in the second half through Daniel Harrison in the 49th minute. A short side play caught the Rabbitohs short and he planted the ball down in traffic to bring Manly-Warringah within two points of the Rabbitohs. The Rabbitohs denied a try by the video referee in the 55th minute when Chris Sandow was tackled centimetres short of the line, but from the next play Dylan Farrell crossed for his third try, capping off the second hat trick in his short first grade career to date. The ball was swung to that lethal right hand side attack of the red and greens and slipped through the line to score, injuring his shoulder in the process. The Rabbitohs were fired up to go on with it with Ben Ross making a big impact from the bench in attack and Shannan McPherson equally as effective in defence. In the 62nd minute, Nathan Merritt crossed for his first try of the night after some great vision from rookie forward Nathan Peats. Peats spotted an opportunity to attack on the right hand short side, shifting the ball to Chris McQueen who broke the line. McQueen had the fullback in two minds, passing the ball inside to Merritt who scored. Issac Luke converted the try this time around to extend the Rabbitohs lead to 12. Two minutes later the number two scored try number two after backing up a bust by potent centre Greg Inglis. Inglis made the most of an opportunity down the left side, finding Merritt inside him to score again. Luke converted to give the Rabbitohs their biggest lead of the game, 32 points to 14 with 15 minutes left on the clock. The Sea Eagles decided to turn it on at this point, with Anthony Watmough being awarded a controversial try in the 71st minute by the video referee. A cross field bomb went undiffused when McQueen and Michael Robertson flew high for the ball. It looked as though Michael Crocker was able to ground the ball in the in-goal but the benefit of the doubt try was awarded after being deemed that the ball was grounded simultaneously by Crocker and Watmough. Daly Cherry-Evans converted to reduce the deficit to 12. The video referee denied Talanoa a second try in the 74th minute, and two minutes later Michael Oldfield scored for the Manly side. Cherry-Evans converted to bring the Eagles within six of the Rabbitohs with three minutes left on the clock. The Eagles had all of the momentum and all of the ball, and when young centre William Hopoate scored wide on the left hand side, the Rabbitohs hearts were in their throats. As Cherry-Evans moved in to strike the ball from the left hand touchline, the crowd watched it all the way in the air, seeing it pass outside the left hand upright, giving the Rabbitohs a deserved two-point victory. The Rabbitohs were dominant for 70 minutes of the game, with only the final ten minutes allowing the Sea Eagles a sniff of a comeback and an improbable victory. The Rabbitohs fought hard anad held on and earned their second victory of the season.

Reserve Grade - NSW Cup Round 4

v Newtown, North Sydney Oval, Sat Apr 2 3:00pm

LOSS 24-34

Late changes Leslie in for Morgan at fullback. Dean Webster comes into the team to replace Peats. Alex Ranieri and Molan added to the bench. McKinnon and Ryan Apps drop off the bench. The Bears are licking their wounds after going down 34-24 to the Newtown Jets in the Frank Hyde Shield on Saturday. The Bears trailed 16-14 at half-time and were down 28-24 with one minute remaining before the Jets raced in a late try. Lambkin said the Bears, who were missing fullback Kane Morgan and lock Nathan Peats, lacked composure. “They were trying to score of every play and and trying to blow them off the paddock rather than show some composure and wait for some good opportunities,” he said.
