WIN 29-18

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have turned in an amazing first 40 minutes of football which lead to a 29 points to 18 defeat of the Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday) in front of 18,245 Members and supporters. Nathan Merritt racked up his 100th try in Rabbitohs colours tonight, after the Rabbitohs held on to win having led 27-nil at half time. This game always had the potential to be one of the most exciting games of the season and it lived up to that billing. It only took seven minutes for the Rabbitohs to score their first points of the night, when prolific try scorer Nathan Merritt crossed to register a century of tries in the cardinal and myrtle. A great kick from Sandow set up the try, and his conversion gave the Rabbitohs a six-nil advantage. The Tigers were ill-disciplined in the opening minutes, with a 12th minute penalty leading to a two-pointer from Sandow. Rhys Wesser signalled his return to the NRL side with a try in the 16th minute when the Rabbitohs busted the Tigers open up the middle. An off load from prop Ben Ross in traffic found Issac Luke who made a big break up the middle of the field. He drew the last line of defence and passed to Wesser who scored under the posts. Sandow’s conversion gave the Rabbitohs a 14-nil advantage inside the first quarter. The Rabbitohs were then under fire from the Tigers but managed to repel their advances. In the 30th minute the Rabbitohs took a drop out, finding touch when Tigers winger Matt Utai could not gather in the ball. From the ensuing field position, two minutes later the Rabbitohs scored their fourth try through returning winger Fetuli Talanoa. The play seemed to have broken down on the left hand flank, but Chris McQueen decided to put boot to ball, grubbering to the in goal area for Talanoa to pounce. Sandow converted to take the lead to 20-nil. In the 35th minute of play, centre Dylan Farrell gave the Tigers defence nightmares when the ball was swung to the right. Farrell used wonderful footwork to bamboozle the defence in front of him, adding another try to his tally against the Tigers over the past two seasons. Sandow converted again to take the score line to 26-nil. Just before the half time break, Sandow calmly slotted a field goal to give his side a 27-nil advantage at the break. It was the best half of football Rabbitohs Members had witnessed in a long time and they were hoping it would continue in the second stanza. The Rabbitohs looked strong from the kick off, but it was the Tigers who would strike first through captain Robbie Farah. A short scoot close to the line paid dividends and Benji Marshall’s conversion took the scores 27-6 after 46 minutes. The Tigers were building in confidence and it led to another try, this time to Utai on a short side play. Marshall converted from the sideline to take the score line to 29-12. A penalty goal to Sandow in the 56th minute extended the Rabbitohs’ lead by two, and Wesser nearly scored a second try in the 60th minute but was deemed to have been held up over the line. Seven minutes later, Marshall scored a try after slicing through the Rabbitohs defence, and after converting his own try he had given his side a sniff at running down the rampaging Rabbitohs. The Tigers were full of confidence and were peppering the Rabbitohs’ defensive line time and again. The Tigers had the Rabbitohs pinned in their own in goal area ten minutes from full time, and a gutsy play from Sandow turned the momentum of the game in favour of the red and greens. Sandow took a short drop out, chasing the ball just over the ten metre line, and regathering, giving his side some much needed possession. The video referee denied former Rabbitoh Wade McKinnon a try in the 74th minute of play, and the Rabbitohs continued to defend until the last play, holding the Tigers out and registering their fourth win for the season. Coach John Lang paid tribute to his players for a fine performance after the match, congratulating captain Michael Crocker on his performance, and also making mention of Dave Taylor who he believes may have cemented his Queensland State of Origin jersey tonight.
