Loss 12-20

TThe South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 20 points to 12 to the Brisbane Broncos at nib Stadium in Perth tonight (Friday) in front of 15,599 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs fought tooth-and-nail to lead 12-4 at the half time break, only to have a Gerard Beale double, amongst three second half Broncos tries, giving the visitors the win in WA. The Rabbitohs lost prop Scott Geddes in the warm up with a hamstring injury, bringing 18th man Nathan Peats into the side within ten minutes of kick off. The Broncos nearly scored in just the second minute of play, but captain Sam Thaiday was denied by the video referee. The Rabbitohs registered the first points of the night through rookie winger Andrew Everingham, the first of two tries for the night. Greg Inglis made the bust and the space for Everingham to touch down in the right hand corner. Adam Reynolds converted to establish a six-point lead after eight minutes. The Rabbitohs then received the advantage of an extra man when Broncos centre Jack Reed was sin binned for a professional foul. Reynolds kicked a penalty goal from the infringement to take the lead to eight after ten minutes. Seven minutes later Everingham scored his second try, again after some solid work from Inglis. 'GI' ran the ball to the right, getting outside his man and powered towards the line. Stopped by some ferocious Broncos defence, Inglis popped a ball out the back to Everingham who touched the ball down for his third try in just two NRL matches. With a handy lead, the Rabbitohs then had to defend their line on numerous occasions. The Rabbitohs held the Broncos up over the line on three or four occasions, but the line was finally breached in the 39th minute when Matt Gillett cleaned up a loose ball to score in the corner. At 12-4 up at the break, the Rabbitohs would have been confident of going on with the job and getting the victory. However the Broncos had other plans. The Broncos scored in the 52nd minute when fullback Josh Hoffman went over after some strong backing up through the middle third of the field. Gerard Beale then crossed for his two tries in the 70th and 74th minutes, both scored in the right hand corner giving the Broncos an eight-point lead with five minutes to play. The Rabbitohs tried a short kick off to get themselves back in the contest, with Dylan Farrell smartly snapping up the ten metre kick, but the ball was lost and so was the game for the men in cardinal and myrtle. Handling errors and pushed passes cost the Rabbitohs tonight, with the team at times seemingly trying too hard to score off every play. The Broncos played a very controlled style of game which led to them not panicking when 12 points down, and setting themselves up to take the two competition points. Inglis was particularly strong in the first half, with fellow international Sam Burgess getting through a mountain of work to help set a platform for his side. Queensland, Australia and Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh suffered an horrendous ankle injury during the game resulting in a compound fraction and severe dislocation.
