WIN 24-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have claimed a deserving 24-18 victory to claim their eighth consecutive win against the Newcastle Knights in front of a 15,212 crowd at McDonald Jones Stadium tonight (Saturday). The game had heart and aggression from the get-go, with players amped up for what was the first encounter for the 2017 season. The Rabbitohs would register the first points of the match with Alex Johnston charging over the try line after faking a dummy pass off the back of a slick backline play. Adam Reynolds conversion attempt failed to find the mark with his boot struggling with the windy conditions. The Rabbitohs led four points to zero. The Knights struggled to find their rhythm and keep up with the fast pace of the game, conceding three penalties in the first 20 mins. The Rabbitohs capitalised on the opportunities with John Sutton sneaking through the home sides defence and finding the line. Reynolds made up for his previous missed conversion slotting the ball straight through the uprights taking the Rabbitohs into a 10 point lead. However the Rabbitohs were quick to catch up the Knights penalty count with the first fault occurring when George Burgess got sent to the sin bin in the 23rd minute. Skipper Sam Burgess would be the next to have a penalty against him for stripping the ball. The Knights made the most of the Rabbitohs position with one less player on the field and found the line to seal their first four-pointer through Captain Trent Hodkinson. Hodkinson’s successful conversion of his own try would narrow the Rabbitohs lead 10 points to six. To say the game was a physical encounter would be an understatement with both teams ramping up their determination to chase their second wins for the season. The aggressive play by the Rabbitohs would again show with Hymel Hunt put on report due to a high tackle. The Knights would rub salt into the wound moments later finding the try line for the second time and levelling the scores 10 points all. It wasn’t until just before halftime that the Knights would bring their side into the lead after taking a shot at goal after Zane Musgrove was penalised for putting pressure on the kicker. Despite the Knights two point lead, the Rabbitohs kept up their determination firing over the line on the halftime buzzer but after going to the video referee and labelled a no try, the Rabbitohs would run into the sheds trailing 10 points to 12. The second half would see the Rabbitohs come out firing scoring in the opening minutes when a well place grubber from Cody Walker fell into the fast paced running line of Bryson Goodwin. The extra points would be added by Reynolds and the Rabbitohs took over the lead 16 points to 12. The Rabbitohs would extend their lead further when Reynolds showed his experience of the game reading the play and sending a high ball pass out wide to Braidon Burns who would fly over for his first NRL try. Reynolds sealed the try with a successful conversion bring the score up 22 points to 12. Another call to the video referee would see a second no try call made against the Rabbitohs after a grubber by Walker bounced off the goal posts and into goal yet was knocked on by Angus Crichton. The second sin bin ruling would this time be made against the Knights with Captain Trent Hodkinson sent off after exchanging words with the referee following a rewarded penalty to the Rabbitohs. The Knights then began to lose their composure and the Rabbitohs were given a shot at adding two more points to the board through another penalty. Reynolds kicking boot slotted the ball through the posts extending the Rabbitohs lead 24 points to 12. The Knights would be the last to add points for the night when they were rewarded a try in the last few minutes. The successful conversion wasn't enough to catch the visitors and the Rabbitohs came out on top 24 points to 18.

LOSS 22-26
Late Changes - Hippi was trimmed 24 hours before the match. T.Butler started second row, Topai-Aveai lock, Kolomantagi and Hamlin on the bench. Boyce, Cordtz, Sheppard dropped off the bench.
The young Rabbitohs would concede a 12 point half time lead to lose their clash against the 7th placed Newcastle Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium. After starting slowly and rousing themselves to dominate the Knights just before and after halftime, the Knights would score a flurry of points in the last quarter of the game to snatch victory. Ryan Carr’s men kicked off their Round Three clash in clear weather just after midday. The Knights opened strongly on home turf with some creative kicking and staunch defending but were unable to capitalise in the opening stanzas, Adam Doueihi providing the Rabbitohs with relief through some massive, clearing kicks. The Rabbitohs would work their way into the match and find time in the Knights half of the field – coming close to scoring through a Cruz Topai-Aveai attacking grubber. However, the Knights would grab first blood after Dean Kouka-Smith would latch onto a high pass on the right edge and finish acrobatically in the corner. The conversion by Matt Cooper would drift wide and the Knights took an early lead 4-0 after 13 minutes. A beautiful kick off after the try saw the Rabbitohs regain possession. Pressuring the Knights line the Rabbitohs would hit back in the 15th minute through fullback Dylan O’Connor after a sweeping move to the right. Doueihi’s conversion attempt would be unsuccessful and the scores would sit at 4-4 after 16 minutes. A penalty for a poor play-the-ball by Josh Saunders gifted the Knights an attacking chance shortly after the kick-off. Jack Johns, son of Newcastle’s Matty Johns, would force his way over the line to give the Knights their second try of the match. Matt Cooper wouldn’t miss this time and the Knights would take a 10-4 lead after 20 minutes. Off the back of a late to release penalty, the Rabbitohs would shift the ball far right before quickly shifting left to stretch the Knights defence. Bailey Shiach-Wise would be the recipient of the last ball and cross in the left corner. Doueihi converted from the sidelines to tie it up 10-10 after 25 minutes. The Rabbitohs would look to take the lead after Bailey Shiach-Wise found space on the left but he would be called back after a shepard call was made by the officials. In the 31st minute the Rabbitohs would again be denied a try after Lucky Taavale would be held up. Adam Doueihi would grab the lead after taking the line on and beating four Knights defenders. He would convert his own try in the 33rd minute to take the scores to 16-10. Phoenix Hunt would extend the Rabbitohs lead, darting from dummy half to slot through a gap and score in the 38th minute. Doueihi added two points with a pinpoint conversion on the half time siren and we’d head into the sheds leading 22-10. The Rabbitohs would come out firing in the second half, enjoying plenty of attacking chances and possession in their opening sets. Phoenix Hunt coming close to scoring twice from dummy half but coming just short on the first attempt and losing possession on the second. The Knights showed some fight as big Keanu Dawson smashed his way through our line but was held up from scoring by a great effort from the young Rabbitohs. They would work their way back into the game and would see plenty of opportunity to score but wouldn’t be able to capitalise during their dominant period. The Rabbitohs defence was tested and would hold out until the 60th minute when Kouka-Smith grabbed his second try of the game after a strong push on the right edge. The conversion would go wide and the scores would sit at 22-14 after 62 minutes. The Knights would go back-to-back after a Matt Cooper linebreak got them within striking distance. The next play would see Cooper go over under the posts to score. Johns would convert and would reduce the deficit to two points. Souths 22 – 20 Knights after 67 minutes. The onslaught continued as Cameron King would grab another try for the Knights just a minute after the replay. Johns converted again and the Knights found themselves leading 26-22. The Knights would see out the game to win by the four point margin.

WIN 30-6
Late Changes - Rogers, J.Hunt were out. Talakai starts second row, Cherrington lock. Tasi and Whitelawon the bench.
Four tries to winger Sitiveni Moceidreke has paved the way for a third consecutive win for the North Sydney Bears, as they overcame the Newcastle Knights 30-6 at McDonald Jones Stadium. Luke Kelly, Tom Burgess, Anthony Cherrington were also standouts for the Bears, while Jalen Feeney and Nick Meaney tried their best for the home side. While North Sydney scored some late points, the scorecard ultimately reflected the contest accurately. The teams took the field on the 27th anniversary of a meeting of yesteryear; the Knights defeated the Bears 13-8 in the 1990 season opener. It was clear from the outset that today's match-up would not be so low scoring, however, and despite some early missed opportunities from both sides it would be the Bears to get on the scoreboard first. Sitiveni Moceidreke finished a simple left-side movement from Noth Sydney and with Eli Levido's conversion missing, they had the 4-0 lead. Experienced pair Tom Burgess and Anthony Cherrington both looked dangerous but came up just short of the line several times; despite the visitors enjoying an overwhelming bulk of possession on the Knights' line, they were struggling to post more points. Eventually Brad Deitz put Cherrington through a gap and the lock forward dived over between the uprights, resulting in a 10-0 scoreline. The Bears kept coming and while the Knights' defence held strong for the majority, North Sydney eventually found another way through with just seconds remaining in the first half. Moceidreke crossed for his second and with an unsuccessful conversion, it was 14-0 to the Bears at the break. With just 36% possession and nine tackles in the oppositions 20-metre zone compared with the Bears' 36, half-time painted a dire picture for the Knights but the scoreline kept them in the contest. The Knights needed to start much better and that they did, with early pressure and a nicely-timed Jaelen Feeney pass giving Peter Mata'utia Newcastle's first try. With Gudgeon converting, they reduced the deficit to 14-6. With 25 minutes remaining the Bears would hit back and once again it was through Moceidreke; in similar fashion to his first two tries, the winger brought up his hat-trick in the corner. With the conversion waved away it was a 12-point lead for North Sydney. While the Bears were throwing everything they had at the Knights in the second half, it was a visibly higher-quality period of play as Newcastle continued to hold on. As fatigue began to set in, however, Luke Kelly saw an opportunity and an impressive ball put Moceidreke in for try number four. The game had got away from the Knights - it was a 24-6 scoreline with 13 minutes remaining. As the contest was winding down, Tautalatasi Tasi put the cherry on top for the Bears with a line-break and try under the posts. Levido converted for a final scoreline of 30-6, leaving the club undefeated in season 2017.
