Alex Johnston 2021-22 Contract Extension

9th September 2020

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce that Papua New Guinean and Australian international Alex Johnston has re-signed with the Club until at least the end of the 2022 season. Johnston, 25, is a South Sydney junior from the La Perouse Panthers club, moving through the junior representative grades to play 138 NRL games for the Rabbitohs since making his debut in 2014, scoring 97 tries. Alex, Rabbitohs first grade player number 1105, has gone on to represent Papua New Guinea and Australia at international level, the Indigenous All Stars on three occasions, as well as playing in the 2014 NRL Grand Final which saw South Sydney break a 43-year premiership drought.

Rabbitohs Head of Football, Mark Ellison, said the Club has worked hard to retain Johnston’s services for a further two years. "Alex is a very important member of our team and we’re very happy that we’ve been able to come to an agreement with him to stay on for at least another two seasons," Mr Ellison said. Alex is a Souths junior, a potent try scorer, and has been a mainstay of our backline for a number of seasons, be it on the wing or at fullback. We’re all very happy that we’ve been able to secure Alex to stay with the Club he loves. We’re looking forward to seeing him break through the 100-try mark very shortly as we head towards the Finals."

Johnston is very happy to have his future decided for at least the next two years. "Firstly I would like to thank all of the Members and fans for their support. It’s been overwhelming to be honest," Johnston said. I’m absolutely stoked to be staying and continuing my dream of being a one-club man. I’m relieved to finally have my contract sorted so I can now just concentrate on footy and scoring more tries. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years and playing with this group of men we have here at Souths."
