One of the best utilities in South Sydney history, Greg Hawick rose through the ranks to play a vital role in the Club's second 'Golden Era' in the 1950s. He commenced playing Rugby League at Alexandria Public School and later with Gardener's Road Junior Technical School, representing Sydney Schools vs South Coast Schools Mt Hawick then captained the South Sydney Lennox Cup team in 1948 before appearing with Alexandria Rovers B and A grades in the South Sydney Juniors League. Hawick starting as a lock, Hawick made his first-grade debut at just seventeen years of age in Round 2 of the 1950 season after playing just a single game of reserve grade. After departing Souths, Hawick had moved to Wagga but signed a second contract with Norths before obtaining clearance from Wagga and had moved back into his fathers South Sydney district residenance to take care of his ill father. The NSWRL disqualified him for the season for breaching the residancy rules, but in the code's first battle in the equity court, it was ruled that the disqualification was a denial of 'natural justice'. This court case caused the end of the residental qualification rule, which was then replaced by inter club Transfer Fee's.
