1910 NSWRL Premiership - Round 5

South Sydney v North Sydney

North Sydney Oval

LOSS 21-27

Selected Round 5 Teams

South Sydney took their first trip across the harbour to the new rugby league venue North Sydney Oval, North Sydney won by 27 points to 21. The opening was somewhat sensational, South Sydney being, within an ace of scoring twice within the first two minutes. Then the referee was knocked out in a wild charge by North Sydney. It was bellows to mend with him, and he soon recovered. The South Sydney forwards speedily got to work, and bustled their opponents back to the line but tables were quickly turned by some capital passing and dodging in which Broomham, performed brillantly before transferring to McFarlane, who scored a try, which was converted. An almost equally bright piece of play followed. Broomham, Norris and Devereoux passed and ran well and beat the opposition entirely, the last named scoring. No goal followed. Then South Sydney drove their opponents back, and play hovered about the North Sydney line for a time. One South Sydney kick struck the cross-bar. At last Leveson dashed across for South Sydney, and Conlin kicked a goal. The tables were turned in a flash as the North Sydney men, eight abreast came up the field, and after a series of passes with equally good tackling by the defenders, a scramble on the line resulted in Broomham scoring a try, which McFarlane converted. The game had so far provided brilliant football. New Rugby convert Hucker scored for South Sydney and a goal following the lead of North Sydney was reduced. At half-time the scores were North Sydney, 13 points; South Sydney, 10 points.

Early in the second half the referen had to caution the hookers in the scrum on each side. The game was still fast, but the honours were with South Sydney who did the major share of the attacking. One of the rapid changes that make the game so attractive to watch then occurred. North Sydney men broke away from their own quarter and passing cleverly ended the effort with a try by Dean. A goal followed. Sullivan figured in a dribble for North Sydney, but kicked a little too hard when he had only the South Sydney fullback to pass. Spence responded by scoring a try for South Sydney, which was converted by Conlin, and then Morris drop kicked a goal for North Sydney from the field. This made the scores North Sydney 20 points South Sydney 15 points. McCabe made a characteristic dash for the North Sydney line, but the defence was alert. Again the surprising condition of the North Sydney men was demonstrated. A passing attack by Sullivan, M'Farlane, Devereaux, and Broomham was successful, the last named scoring behind the posts. McFarlane converted. McCabe, Rosewell and Conlin similarly performed with credit, and another try, by the later, was posted to the credit of South Sydney. Conlin failed to convert. It was a heavy scoring match. Leveson scored a try for South Sydney from the scrum but the goal kicking by Conlin was lamentably weak. A goal from a free to North Sydney put their stock further up. Throughout the game was ably contested and played in a sportsmanlike way. North Sydney won by 27 points to 21. Mr. Ballerum, referee.
