Selected Round 14 Teams

At Wentworth Park, before 4000 people, the local team were successful. It was a brilliant exhibition of football, by which the spectators were kept in perpetual excitement. From the kick-off it was evident that it was to be a very fast game. The sides attacked in turn, but the tackling and defence generally were very sound. From a penalty shot by Bolewski midway between the centre and 25, 17 year old Harold Horder, one of the promoted juniors, caught the ball, and beating man after man with a beautiful swerve, sprinted the whole length of the ground, he was quickly past Bolweski and speeding for the line with Mugivan hot on his heels. The later tackled him near the line, but his impetus carried Horder over and scored a great try, which Maidment failed to convert. It was a splendid individual effort, and was quickly recognised by the crowd of barrackers. South Sydney, 3 to nil. The Reds worked to the goal-line. There Redmond secured from the ruck, and fell over the chalk-mark with a try. Bolowski failed at goal, 3 all. Just beyond the centre Rigney centred the ball, which was taken by A.Butler, who ran well and passed to McCabe, who dashed on and crossed the goal-line near the posts. Maidment failed to convert. It was a capital try. S.S., 6 to 3. Soon after the kick out the local team were penalised inside half-way, and Horder kicked a good goal. S.S., 8 to 3. Glebe attacked strenuously, but were kept at bay for some time. Then from a scrum near the goal-line McKivat passed out to Gray, who shot over the line with a try, which Algie converted. 8 all. Fast and exciting football followed, with Algie dribbling the ball along the wing over the goal line, and then scoring Glebe's third try, which Bolewski failed to convert. Glebe led by 11 to 8 at half-time.

Shortly after the kick-off the ball was passed to Horder, who dashed for the goal-line, but Bolewski forced him out just in time. Reversing the attack, the Red team rushed the ball over the South Sydney goal-line, and Kelly scored fourth try for the Glebe, unconverted. Glebe 14 to 8. The Reds kept up the pressure, and Pert scored the next try, Algie failing at goal. Glebe, 17 to 8. Immediately afterwards Davis, securing the ball, put in a good run, passed to Nicholls, who dashed over the line. Maidment failed at goal. Glebe, 17 to 11. Inside the centre Butler picked up the ball and passed it to Davis, on to Horder, who ran to the full-back, and then passed to Collier, who scored the try. Butler failed at goal. Glebe, 17 to 14. Glebe were penalised, and Maidment kicked a goal. Glebe, 17 to 16. Immediately afterwards Glebe were awarded a penalty, and Algie landed a goal. Glebe, 19 to 16. The game continued to be fast and exciting, but there was no further scoring. Full time, Glebe 19 to 16. T. McMahon, referee.

Presidents Cup - Round 3

v St George, Wentworth Park, 2:00pm

WIN 9-8

Played at Wentworth Park. South Sydney had the best of matters in the scrum work, the three-quarters being given many chances to join in passing rushes. St. George, however, were sure in tackling, and more than held their own in the open. A penalty goal by Ross and a try by White for St. George, and a try by Booth . for South Sydney, were the scores at half- time. In the second spell play was of an even character for a time, then St. George three- quarters broke away and White scored. South Sydney began to press solidly on resuming, and, despite splendid defensive work, finally forced their way through, Clancy scoring. A few minutes later they added another try. Brodie forced his way through the ruck and over the line. St. George made desperate endeavors to reduce the one-point lead, but the full-time whistle went, with the scores still: South Sydney 9 points, St. George, 8 points.
