LOSS 26-30

The South Sydney Rabbitohs were pipped at the post by the Wests Tigers in the Return to Redfern Members Only trial match at Redfern Oval today (Sunday), with the Tigers scoring in the final two minutes to steal a 30-26 victory in front of 5,000 Ticketed Members. The Rabbitohs trailed 16-6 at half time before leading 26-22 with only 10 minutes to go. But a try to Sean Meaney in the 78th minute gave the Tigers a late win. The Tigers opened the scoring through tries to Benji Marshall and Tim Moltzen, Marshall converting the second try to go to a 10-nil lead after 24 minutes. The Rabbitohs first points came through a try to Dave Tyrrell in the 29th minute of play. A grubber kick from five-eighth Luke Capewell was collected by Tyrrell behind the defensive line, scoring the Rabbitohs first try for the 2009 pre-season. Capewell converted to reduce the Tigers’ lead to four. Beau Ryan scored for the Tigers in the 37th minute of the first half, with Marshall’s conversion giving the Tigers a 16-6 advantage at the break. The Rabbitohs scrambling defence was strong, but too much dropped ball was killing off attacking opportunities for Souths. Marshall looked dangerous every time he touched the ball for the Tigers, but the Rabbitohs younger players were very enthusiastic when they came on to the field, breaking down many Tigers attacking raids. The Rabbitohs struck early in the second half, with new recruit Chris McQueen scoring in the 44th minute. It was another Capewell grubber kick that delivered the points, bringing the home side within six. In the 49th minute, Jaiman Lowe charged from dummy half to score, and under 20s halfback Adam Reynolds’ conversion levelled the scores at 16-all. The combination of Capewell and Reynolds was working for the Rabbitohs in the halves, with both players controlling the play and creating opportunities. The Tigers scored again through Shannon Gallant in the 56th minute, with Sean Meaney’s conversion restoring the lead to six at 22-16. Three minutes later, Shaune Corrigan crossed in the north-west corner for Souths, after Reynolds put up a towering cross-field bomb to Corrigan’s corner. He scored centimetres from touch, reducing the deficit to two. The Rabbitohs finally hit the front in the 67th minute when Daniel Sayegh charged over the line from close range to score. Reynolds converted, taking the score to 26-22 in favour of South Sydney. Eight minutes from full time, former Rabbitoh Rhys Hanbury scored for the Tigers, levelling the scores at 26-all. With six minutes to go, under 20s star Malcolm Webster stripped a ball from Hanbury to save a certain try, but the Tigers managed to score two minutes from full time through Meaney to seal the win. The Rabbitohs didn’t give up, having one more scoring chance in the 80th minute, but it was not to be. Up front, Scott Geddes and Jaiman Lowe battled hard all day, with Reynolds and Webster sparking the attack when they were injected into the game. Rabbitohs Head Coach Jason Taylor was pleased with his team after the match. “It was a superb day all round,” Taylor said. “It was reported during the week that we weren’t taking the game seriously by fielding the team that we did, but I think these guys proved that wrong. “We gave some young guys a shot at taking on a quality side like the Tigers and they stood up today. “It was an excellent effort, every seemed to enjoy the day, and we were very competitive. “I really enjoyed the day and I think everyone else who came to Redfern Oval today will have enjoyed themselves as well.”
